One year old - nappies that end up like this?!

Babystressf · 15/12/2023 11:37

At the end of my tether. Posted a few weeks ago but can’t link my thread. Ds is one and has had bad nappies on and off for a while. They’ve slowly got better as we cut out yoghurt and for a few weeks things were fine. He diet has not changed in any way in this time.

Again today he has been to the toilet and I have picked him up to change him and clumps of the contents of the nappy are all down his leg under his trouser. It’s not runny enough to be diarrhoea I don’t think but it’s obviously going everywhere and the nappy is definitely the right size. I know it probably seems like a small issue but we’ve had car seats ruined and clothes and carpets etc and I just can’t face this happening again. The gp has sent off samples and it all came back normal. Not allergic to anything we can find after months of trial and error. Is this just normal? To leak through trousers? Is this part of being a parent and I have to roll with it? I honestly don’t know if I am being dramatic, I really worry about hygiene so this is very stressful for me.

@fairymary87 is size four really small for a one year old? Could that be it? The weight suggestion is in line with his size so I went on that?

Very possibly. Toddler poo is a funny thing, so many things can set it off. Pampers are small in sizes in general we've found. Judging from the size you mentioned he is, try a 4+ or 5. Also marry it with a limitation diet. Colds and bugs cause issues and some kids teething can give them a funny tummy. If there was an allergy there would be so many more symptoms. It took my daughter a while to get some foods digested properly. It's takes time. However a nappy should be able to hold it in. Mines in size 7 pamper pull ups and is still in 9/12/12-18 months clothing. Age 19 months and is small for her ages. But quite a bum and thighs. So there shape also makes a difference. We also have a milk sensitivity. If she has any milk her nappy still holds it. Sounds like you have a lot going on. I'm sorry you're going through that. But defo try other nappies for starters as you need to get something to stop causing you extra work xx

Fromage42 · 15/12/2023 12:18

The weight guide doesn’t work for us - chunky thighs / bum meant that DS was in size 4 at 7mo but was still under the weight recommendation on the pack/ in 50th percentile so not big for his age. There’s no harm getting the next size up? If they don’t fit they can go in a drawer and if they do then it’s an easy fix.

Babystressf · 15/12/2023 12:23

@Fromage42 my worry is they would leak even more and when I say I can’t face any more of this, I’m very unwell and just not coping. Dp is useless and never around

My 8mo is in size 4 and I think he'll have outgrown them by 9mo. He's on the 50th centile, so completely average size. Is your DC very long and skinny? We use Aldi own brand - they're much less expensive, lovely designs and we haven't had any leaks yet. DS is BF and has quite loose stools, especially after porridge, yogurt, etc.

BurbageBrook · 15/12/2023 12:28

They're all different. My almost 5 month old is in size 4! High centile baby.

Winnipeggy · 15/12/2023 12:30

Try pull ups, my DD has never leaked out of one, must be worth a go?

Babystressf · 15/12/2023 12:31

@Winnipeggy used those before snd sadly it was much worse 😭

I would buy a pack smaller and larger and see how they fit also try the nappy pants as these are elasticated around the top of the leg

Flyhigher · 15/12/2023 14:23

Can you order both other sizes online and see how you get on? Can he go to nursery?
Seems like you need a break. Nursery might figure this all out.

CaroleSinger · 15/12/2023 14:32

Forget what the directions say. If it's leaking down the legs then obviously the legs are too loose on him. Try a smaller size and see if it makes a difference. It would not be running down his legs if the nappy fitted properly and I'm not talking about the waist - look at the legs. If he has slim legs and it is not fitted enough around the thighs then it will leak.

Lostmumdotcom · 15/12/2023 14:36

Have you tried cutting all milk out of his diet not just yogurts?

Excited101 · 15/12/2023 14:40

I’ve looked after several 1 year olds in size 4, so that’s potentially fine. Different brands fit differently, have you got friends with other brands you could try a couple of?

current LO was going through clothes with his poos 2/3 times a week at 12months plus- it was fairly awful. It’s much better now though.

Babystressf · 15/12/2023 14:43

@Excited101 did you work out why?

OP posts:
Excited101 · 15/12/2023 14:45

Nope! It was a (long!) phase of a few months. It seems to have stopped now, they’ll be 2 in Feb.

thehonscupboard · 15/12/2023 14:46

I always go up a nappy size if we've had a leak, regardless of the weight recommendations. My 9 month old is in pampers no. 5, as the 4s didn't work with her thighs. I reckon size is your problem, and if you can afford to, switch to pull ups as well.

justanotherlaura · 15/12/2023 14:46

My 13 month old is in size 6 Asda nappies, we ignored the weight and just sized up each time he was wetting through the nappies. He's 50th centile for weight so not massive but we hardly ever have to change his clothes now

Redruby2020 · 15/12/2023 14:48

Babystressf · 15/12/2023 11:41

@Flyhigher pampers premium

I wouldn't bother with theirs to be honest, i literally tried them a few times or was gifted some lol.
Otherwise i stuck to own brand ones.

Babystressf · 15/12/2023 14:48

@Excited101 that gives me some hope it will eventually stop. Genuinely it has been the worst part of parenting for me. I do not cope well with lack of hygiene and it’s caused me so much stress!!

OP posts:
Excited101 · 15/12/2023 15:09

We were lucky, his poos were generally first thing every morning. But it was bad. If he didn’t do his morning poo I wouldn’t take him swimming because it wasn’t worth the risk. Sometimes it would be multiple changes of clothes if he did do more than one poo. Nightmare!

SunshineLollipopsRainbow · 15/12/2023 20:24

I had to size up earlier than the weight due to absorbency so I'd try a size 5. My 14month old is in size 4 and she's a tiny dot but does massive wees

bettynutkins · 15/12/2023 20:29

There is no harm in trying a size up. Worst case it leaks just like the current nappy.

My baby is 15 months and in size 6 (she is chunky though) and has been since about 9/10 months.

My 14mo ds is exactly the same, I use pampers baby dry 4+. The plus is not a bigger size like people keep saying, it's extra absorbent. Maybe try the 4+ if the 5 are slightly roomy

When I worked in the baby room most of our under 1s were in size 4 and over 1s in size 5. Obviously there were anomalies but as a rule - over 1 was size 5!

GRex · 15/12/2023 21:06

Are you making sure the ruffs are outside the nappy? And there. Is no leg gaping? It sounds odd, but honestly try other nappies if it isn't a dietary issue. Huggies are good.

DataMum88 · 15/12/2023 21:09

Maybe try a larger nappy? My 7 month old is currently in size 4s. Coincidentally she's also recently started leaking through nappies (sometimes she may as well not be wearing one, from the mess!) but she's always had tummy issues as allergic to milk and formula. We've recently started weaning her off Gaviscon on recommendation from the GP, so her movements are a lot looser and she generally only goes once in the morning when she wakes up so stores it all up! Position really makes a difference too - she's just started to stand and was squatting to pick up a toy this morning when she filled her nappy - it went everywhere, right up to her neck!?
