One year old - nappies that end up like this?!

At the end of my tether. Posted a few weeks ago but can’t link my thread. Ds is one and has had bad nappies on and off for a while. They’ve slowly got better as we cut out yoghurt and for a few weeks things were fine. He diet has not changed in any way in this time.

Again today he has been to the toilet and I have picked him up to change him and clumps of the contents of the nappy are all down his leg under his trouser. It’s not runny enough to be diarrhoea I don’t think but it’s obviously going everywhere and the nappy is definitely the right size. I know it probably seems like a small issue but we’ve had car seats ruined and clothes and carpets etc and I just can’t face this happening again. The gp has sent off samples and it all came back normal. Not allergic to anything we can find after months of trial and error. Is this just normal? To leak through trousers? Is this part of being a parent and I have to roll with it? I honestly don’t know if I am being dramatic, I really worry about hygiene so this is very stressful for me.

In my experience size 4 isn't small for a one year old. My two year old is still size 4 and my daughter used size 4+ until she was fully potty trained at 3. Both are big for their age.

I would try a different brand. Morrisons always fitted my daughter well, but didn't work so well for my second. He wears Sainsburys own. Just trial and error for each shop/child.

It could be worth looking at any potential allergies again too though

Flyhigher · 15/12/2023 11:51

Try both bigger and smaller and see. Is it tight around his leg?

Satsscores · 15/12/2023 11:51

Babystressf · 15/12/2023 11:46

@Satsscores not skinny but he’s very tall so also not chubby. @Flyhigher is suggesting a larger nappy I think, but are you saying smaller? I will try anything

Ok my baby has always been upper percentiles and was in size 6 nappies at that age, so maybe go up a size or two if that's the case. I often ignored the weight guidance as he seemed to need larger than the recommended.

Junebug22 · 15/12/2023 11:52

I’m not sure why it is as yeah, you’d think a “looser” nappy would actually leak but that’s been our experience. Can’t say when we’ve ever sized him up that we’ve thought the new nappy size hasn’t fit -always seems to be a good fit! We use pampers too (tried more affordable brands and found they leaked or irritated his skin ) but pull ups.

Also at the risk of sounding like an idiot: if he’s still in the sticky tab nappies, are you definitely pulling out the wee ruffles around his bum/top of his legs? I got caught out with leaks a few times when I hadn’t done that!

Babystressf · 15/12/2023 11:53

@Flyhigher no I would say snug around the tummy but then space at the legs. A normal poo is fine though in them so it’s hard to know

Nappies aren't only about weight, if you think about it there are lots of variables in hip, waist and leg circumference etc - just like pants fit adults differently, nappies fit kids differently. Two children with the same weight can be very different, one tall and slim or one short and solid etc. We always used Aldi and they were fine, pampers are £££!

You need two things: nappies that don't leak and to know if he has something that's upsetting his tummy.

Flyhigher · 15/12/2023 11:53

I did pampers standard. Many years ago and they were fine. But this sounds a bit strange. Maybe the premium doesn't fit him well. Is it leaking round the leg?

Satsscores · 15/12/2023 11:54

But it is hard to tell without seeing him, as babies are shaped so differently. My baby has massive thighs! I'd experiment with a couple of different brands and sizes and see if it helps. I would be concerned about explosive nappies though.
If it's just a leak it's probably the nappies, but if you can hear a lot of noise when he poos and they appear to be explosive I think that needs more investigation. There are lots of bugs around too at the moment so could just be something he is fighting off. Poor you!

Flyhigher · 15/12/2023 11:54

Space at the legs doesn't sound right. Can't be too tight though. But shouldn't have space.

snoopyfanaccountant · 15/12/2023 11:55

As others have said, I would try a different brand of nappies. Neither of mine got on well with Pampers; I used Tesco for one and Aldi for the other.

Oliotya · 15/12/2023 11:55

I'd size up and try a different brand. My 80% one year old has been in size 5 for ages. Whereas my middle never wore bigger than size 4. They're all different.

Flyhigher · 15/12/2023 11:55

Mine had fat thighs too. So was fine. If yours has skinny thighs that might be it.

Babystressf · 15/12/2023 11:43

@fairymary87 is size four really small for a one year old? Could that be it? The weight suggestion is in line with his size so I went on that?

My 14 month old is in 6+
The sizes on the packet are just a guide

Ceci03 · 15/12/2023 11:56

Yeh my son had this but he grew out of it. There will be a nappy that works for him u just have to find it. Maybe a pair of pants over the nappy. Sounds like the leg is too loose .

Balloonhearts · 15/12/2023 11:57

If they're loose at the legs then that's probably why. Try a different brand. We only used Fred and Flo from Tesco, they were the only ones that didn't leak.

Bumble84 · 15/12/2023 11:59

I would try and size up. My just turned one in September is in size 6 nappies. She is a really big baby though. Try a different brand as well. I find tesco and Aldi the best

JollyHostess101 · 15/12/2023 12:00

Pamoers leak all the time so we stopped buying them and are in Lidl and Aldi and have zero issues!

id try another brand if I was you!!

Mine was still in size 4 at 3 years old; so I’d say it was probably too big.

Wow 😂

Mine was out of nappies at about 3.5 years
old but never made it past size 5.

Babyshadows · 15/12/2023 12:03

Maybe try cloth nappies as they are really good at getting a tighter fit around the legs and back. If cloth nappies not head in your budget, work load, head space ect then you could try a disposable nappy with a cloth nappy cover over the top, something like this to help contain any mess!

Flyhigher · 15/12/2023 12:03

Think it's a tall baby with slim legs. Mine had Chubba thighs. Maybe pampers leg holes are wider than Tesco or Aldi.

Hyacinth1000 · 15/12/2023 12:03

Just going on something someone told me, not personal experience. Once they are about one and very mobile I got told it’s better to switch to pull ups as they move around better with baby and don’t leave as many leg gaps as the baby toddles/climbs/crawls.

My 15 month old is in size 6 pampers nappy pants. What weight is he? Some brands do fit some kids better than others, it's not as easy as picking by the weight range suggested.

Jellycats4life · 15/12/2023 12:07

Don’t be so sure it’s not a food issue. Blood tests don’t pick up everything.

You say you had to cut out yoghurt. Have you considered cutting out all dairy to see if things improve?

My son is lactose intolerant and with hindsight he had signs for a while before the loose bowel movements became frequent.

Have you noticed any skin rashes, especially on the face?

Wherethewildthymeblows · 15/12/2023 12:09

I dont think it is a diet issue but a nappy issue. Try a different brand. It is years ago now, but I recall getting on best with Tesco own brand. Pampers were ok. Huggies were useless. But everyone has a different opinion and you just need to try out different brands/sizes to see what works for you.
