I HIT A CAR FOR THE FIRST TIME

sleepdeprivedma · 14/12/2023 18:23

Currently panicking myself tonight I was parking in a pace and I pulled out and scratched the car beside me with my car being white and the other being black you can see it. I've left a note with my name and number and I'm just sitting shitting myself as I don't know what to expect and I have £17 in the bank so I'm worried about the money. Can my insurance cover this?
Im posting on AIBU for traffic

Did you get some pics? Don’t want them claiming you did more damage than you did!

HamsterBanana · 14/12/2023 18:25

Please tell me you took photos!!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 14/12/2023 18:26

As others have said, please say you took photos.

DixonD · 14/12/2023 18:27

I was nearly hit (in my car) this afternoon by a driver reversing out of a parking space at some speed without looking.

Maybe take your time in future.

DixonD · 14/12/2023 18:28

It may be that it won’t be expensive to fix. Some paint marks will just rub off. Is it dented?

WillowTit · 14/12/2023 18:29

go through your insurance if necessary. best way

YeahIsaidit · 14/12/2023 18:31

Firstly, calm down, as shit as it is accidents happen and you're not the first or indeed the last that this will happen to. Secondly, this is what insurance is for, you've left your contact details for the owner of the other car, you didn't just drive off and THAT is what people get into trouble for when they have a minor accident. You'll be fine

sleepdeprivedma · 14/12/2023 18:31

It's not dented I was going like 3 miles an hour.
I've attached the photo

I did simular to my neighbours car and it cost about £150 for a bloke to come and fix it on the driveway.

Have they even contacted you yet?

HamsterBanana · 14/12/2023 18:36

That's over two panels isn't it? Be around £200-250 maximum. I can't imagine they'll want to go through insurance for that.

I'll have to go through the insurance as
I have no money

Try and relax a bit and not assume the worst straight away. You did the right thing by leaving your details.

If you park into spaces forward, maybe start reversing into them as this reduces the risk of hitting the cars next to you because of the way the car swings.

sleepdeprivedma · 14/12/2023 18:44

Can I still go through the insurance even if they don't want to?? Cause I genuinely can't Afford to get it fixed out if pocket I could cry 😭 could barley afford Xmas now this

This is why you have insurance, once they contact you provide your insurance details and they or their insurer will set things in motion. You don't need to do anything right now.

What do I need to tell them just who my provider is? This has never happened to me
In the whole 10 years off driving

You are so lovely and sympathetic. Bet all your friends confide their worries in you.

neilyoungismyhero · 14/12/2023 18:50

As others have said it's what insurance is for. If they're concerned they will soon be in touch so you can make your decision then. Ensure they are aware you took photos of the damage so they won't add their own bumps and scrapes to the incident. My grandson ran his bike into a parked car - he has no co ordination and the guy told him not to worry about the damage which was a broken light. Hopefully your person might feel similarly over the scrape.

Can I still use the insurance even if they rather I didn't I only have £17 in the bank Christmas has cost me everything and I don't get paid until January

Do you know what your excess is on your policy? Or do you have excess cover as well?

I honestly don't

You'll pay your excess but your renewal for next year will be up because you've had a claim.

Was also going to mention excess. I think you might have to pay that as its your fault. Not 100% though

sleepdeprivedma · 14/12/2023 18:56

I'm so stressed I don't have any money 😭

OK, have you got your policy handy? We can try and help you find out?
