Do you wash coats and how often? Including winter parkas and jackets etc?

I wash my puffer coats as and when they get dirty. Make sure to tumble dry with a tennis ball to plump the feathers back up.

caringcarer · 14/12/2023 09:46

I wash a couple of fleece jackets I use for dog walking but my wool.coats get dry cleaned.

TheCatfordCat · 14/12/2023 09:46

I wash every Spring when they get used less but that's it unless they are particularly dirty. I don't have a tumble dryer, I just hang them up.

Malariahilaria · 14/12/2023 09:51

Specialist puffa has to go to specialist place so once a year, wool coats dry cleaners once a year, macs go in washing machine if they get muddy for a quick rinse on a special magic cycle which apparently doesn't hurt coats with a coating.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/12/2023 09:53

When I think they need it but I'm just here to see all the people who wash them after every time they've worn them because they've been outside and near to other people and in contact with things that they've touched.

ThinWomansBrain · 14/12/2023 09:54

depends what sort of coat.
I'm not overkeen on dry cleaning - tend to do that for raincoats.
Some coats are fine to chuck in the washing machine - oihers I prefer to soak, rinse and spin dry if I don't think they're up to a full wash cycle.

I'm currently puzzling what to do with a leather/borg lined aviator style jacket where the cuffs are starting to look a bit grubby.

Thanks @ThePoshUns for the tip on drying puffer coats - I've just bought one.

As and when they are dirty. Kids coats more often because they get filthy at school etc. mine gets muddy sometimes on walks or when the kids jump in puddles near me. All just in machine and hung to dry. Not particularly fancy coats

Nomorecoconutboosts · 14/12/2023 09:57

My coat washing varies a lot.
I don’t think my coats were washed when I was young so it took me a while to realise how dirty every day coats can get.
I had a very adventurous dd and her school coat was machined washed weekly (she literally rolled in mud as a game at playtime ‘muddy pups’ )
now she doesn’t do that she’s 16 so on average wash her coat every term in winter.

RenegadeMrs · 14/12/2023 10:03

God yes. I live in a fairly rural villiage and it is muddy. The car is filthy after a week, the kids are mysteriously sticky and love to touch my clothes and my youngest still wants to be picked up every now and again.

It gets bunged in the wash once a fortnight ish, usually when I'm washing the kids coats. DD2 got through two coats in two days last week🙃

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/12/2023 10:07

My son's coats get machine washed almost every week because he seems to roll around the all-weather pitch in them until they are well coated with that black all-weather dirt.

My coats go to the dry cleaners at the end of winter and the one I'm wearing most is at the cleaners now because it smelled of smoke from being piled with other people's coats.

Sorry I started 2 threads by accident. Thanks for your replies.

Yes all the time - busy outdoorsy family here! Always buy machine washable and we all have extra coats in case they take a while to dry! Once a week I would say.

BeckhamSeven · 14/12/2023 12:38

My daughter's school coat at half term (it gets FILTHY. I have no idea what they do with them!!)

Mine usually every spring when I'll be wearing them less.

If they’re visibly dirty I’ll wash them or get them dry cleaned. Other than that, no.

Caspianberg · 14/12/2023 12:45

Yes.
All depends on coats and owners. Most of mine I wash at end of season, ie winter one in spring, summer blazer in Autumn.
Ds coat gets dirty more often as he just rolls in mud! So I try and wipe down with cloth when possible, and other times it’s beyond it and needs a proper soak in bath or machine

SilverAntelope · 14/12/2023 12:47

No

Octavia64 · 14/12/2023 12:53

I mostly have waterproof coats so not washed.

I once washed one with the special stuff that claims it preserves the waterproofing and it really didn't so I don't wash them.

They get rained on pretty often though......

MegBusset · 14/12/2023 12:54

Yes at least once a winter / if they get particularly muddy. Use NikWax tech wash and waterproofer for waterproof stuff.

LinguisticallyCunning · 14/12/2023 12:57

Only when they're either mucky or smelly.
