Please help- advice needed re really severe heartburn

Have posted in the last ten days about a severe pain in my side/stomach that I've been having. Have had blood tests to find the cause. Not sure if this is related but thought I'd mention it.

I've taken two omeprazole daily for months due to acid reflux, these always help and I don't have any symptoms when taking them. I took them last night before my main meal like I always do but this morning I've woken up with the worst heartburn I've ever felt. I literally can't focus on anything else as the pain is so bad. It's making me feel really nauseous. Obviously I can't take two more tablets until tonight but I really don't know what to do to get me through till then? Any suggestions please?

It might not be heartburn. Do get it checked, to make sure it isn't gallstones.

Tacotortoise · 12/12/2023 07:10

God just take another tablet. You shouldn't do it regularly but it sounds like you really need one (I have crohns and have had to do this on occasion). I guess you are waiting for blood test results but I suggest you ring your doctor.

Urgent medical assessment today.

Discospacecherry · 12/12/2023 07:12

I'm thinking gallstones too. You absolutely must see a gp ASAP.

PickledPurplePickle · 12/12/2023 07:14

Sounds like gallstones- off to your GP

Loubelle70 · 12/12/2023 07:18

Gallstones possibility as others have said... but i have something called GERD...look it up .you can take gaviscon a little space apart from Omeprazole. Go buy some and see how feel xxx

lemonsandlimesx · 12/12/2023 07:18

Agree with the above. You also need to find which food triggers you.

Me- tea chocolate tomato's and Prosecco.

Although yours does sound to the extreme and tablets just deal with the effect, not the cause.

Jeffsmeffsmiff · 12/12/2023 07:20

Sorry to say this OP but are you sure it's nit your heart? Id probably go get checked just in case.

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 12/12/2023 07:22

I had this a month or so ago, I honestly wondered if it was a heart attack at one point.
I took Nexium, from the pharmacy. It took 72 hours to work.
You really need to see your GP, Omeprazole is ineffective for me.
I had my gallbladder removed years ago so wasn’t that!

goodnessgraciousannie · 12/12/2023 07:23

@Jeffsmeffsmiff I'm pretty sure it's not anything to do with my heart. The pain is right in the centre just below my boobs which is normally where I get my heartburn/acid reflux pain

Like others, definitely get checked.

However, in the long run I would re-think taking them 'before food'.

I have GERD and take lansporazole. They're far more effective when taken first thing in the morning, several hours before eating.

GERD

Trez1510 · 12/12/2023 07:29

One of my brothers has GERD.

Omeprazole worked for him until it just didn't.

He was switched to Lansoprazole and it works much better even than Omeprazole ever did for him.

Might you need a medication review?

TheGrimm · 12/12/2023 07:30

What time did you eat your meal and then go to bed? Did you have any alcohol?

Try Lansoprazole.

Ask for an endoscopy referral.

This sounds like gallstones to me. Mine gave me these exact symptoms.

jemenfous37 · 12/12/2023 08:06

i wonder why we bother trying to save the NHS.
Everyone seems to think MN is a forum equivalent

goodnessgraciousannie · 12/12/2023 09:02

@10HailMarys I'm starting to think it could be this as the pain is now moving to under my right ribs

@jemenfous37 because I don't want to waste the drs time if someone has any solutions that have worked for them for acid reflux that I could try first
