Smear test on period

Willieverstopcoughing · 11/12/2023 21:12

Can it be/will it be done?

Due a test tomorrow with my Dr, but also want to talk about my blood test results, so don’t want to miss my appointment (waited weeks and weeks for it)
Is it ok to go to the appointment and tell her I’m on my period and she can reschedule it and we discuss the blood tests?

Lots of people saying I’m being unreasonable, why though 😬

Can I just add I am on my period..! Not sure if my post in confusing! I mean, would you have to ring up to postpone/tell them? I am reluctant to not have the chance to discuss my blood test results

It's unlikely the GP will be doing the smear. It's usually a practice nurse. You could attend and tell her that you are on your period when you arrive but it's a waste of an appointment, surely you could ask for a phone call instead to discuss bloods?

Willieverstopcoughing · 11/12/2023 21:21

@kenadams86 It says it’s booked in with her? (My Dr?)

Ask for a phone call to discuss bloods and reschedule the smear!

Chubby81 · 11/12/2023 21:23

Because a smear taken during your period is much more difficult for a screener to interpret due to the large numbers of inflammatory cells and debris in the sample. However with the move to HPV first screening it might be less of an issue.

kenadams86 · 11/12/2023 21:24

I think you just need to ring them in the morning and confirm and be honest. They can't do a smear when you are on your period and it's unlikely a GP is doing it. I guess it not impossible though. I'm a practice nurse and I've not heard of a GP doings smears. Seems like a waste of their time but I suppose it depends on your surgery, location etc

bakebeans · 11/12/2023 21:24

Practice nurses tend to do smears unless there isn't one at the Gp.
they won't be able to do the smear if u are on your period but they can discuss blood tests etc

Beautifulbutterflyy · 11/12/2023 21:25

Yes definitely reschedule the smear. I had on and off bleeding because of my implant and when I was having it done it made the bleeding start again so the nurse had to discard it as they can’t get accurate results so I had to come back again

IAmAnIdiot123 · 11/12/2023 21:25

I attended on my period once because I started just before I left the house (typical!) I told her as soon as I arrived and she rescheduled it. I think she said something about the results not being as accurate. If you have another thing to talk about, I would still go but maybe call in advance to shorten the app.

Pearl97 · 11/12/2023 21:26

It’s unusual but not impossible for it to be with your GP. I’ve had bleeding before and they have said to rearrange. I would definitely call and ask. Always good to check with others, that’s what mumsnet is for.

Mumof2teens79 · 11/12/2023 21:28

It depends on the test.
These days it's not a smear test....they aren't looking at cells. I think across the NHS they now look for HPV infection instead and so it may be possible to do it on your period (whereas old.test had to be between) but I am not sure.

Agree though, unusual for the doctor themselves to do it unless there is a specific reason.

Colalola · 11/12/2023 21:35

Cancel and book telephone appt to get results.

MissBattleaxe · 11/12/2023 21:35

At the surgery I work at we won't do a smear if a patient is having a period. It's an HPV test but still done using the same method.

Willieverstopcoughing · 11/12/2023 21:39

If the period is very light, can they still do it?

LittleBearPad · 11/12/2023 21:41

Just cancel and book an appointment to discuss your blood test results.

Pearl97 · 11/12/2023 21:42

They would rather not, that’s what the nurse told me. She said if you’re someone who bleeds almost daily and you can’t be sure if you will be bleeding or not they will do it, but you might have to havé it done again. My advice would be to re book

LivStanshall · 11/12/2023 21:43

They used to tell you to book your smear for mid-cycle. I don’t think they will do it even if your bleeding is light.

littlebopeepp234 · 11/12/2023 21:58

No they will not do it! It has to be mid cycle. They will refuse to do it.

And why on earth would you want a smear test done while on your period?

Craver · 12/12/2023 15:14

You will be asked to reschedule smear- In a smear test the person doing the test is basically taking a sample of the cells from your cervix. If there is any blood it will interfere with the view of the cells. Normally when booking a smear you will be asked to book mid-cycle...They aren't able to change to science just because it doesn't suit you.. Sorry if that sounds harsh.
