To think less of people who send these Christmas cards

Bananacup · 11/12/2023 13:41

... to have absolutely no interest in Christmas cards that say 'Merry Christmas from [Sender]'

And that's all

Literally no other message.

You've taken the time to post me a picture of a tree, but you've written no personal message whatsoever? Makes me feel like I'm a box on your to-do list, like the worst kind of business networking. It would have been better to send nothing at all. Just don't bother if you literally have nothing personal or interesting to say.

And about 90% of the Christmas cards I receive are like this!

I always write a message for the person and really appreciate it when others do the same. It seems odd, if it's the only contact you have with someone from one year to the next, to not say something more than just Merry Xmas. I don't send cards to people I see regularly, so it's a nice way to keep in touch.

If it’s the only contact all year, it seems odd to persist at all. You obviously do t actually want them to be part of your life, so what’s the purpose?

BrightYellowDaffodil · 11/12/2023 15:23

@AMuser You don't make your own paper or ink (colour of such hand-blended to reflect the personality of the recipient)?

Some people just don't bother to make an effort.

If you are the recipient of any of the Christmas cards that I’ve taken quite a bit of trouble to find, write in, walk 1 hour to the post office in the rain, to send.

Well bah humbug to you!

You could get the postman to collect from your home for free, arrange it on the Royal Mail website.

SingleMum11 · 11/12/2023 15:27

Blimey. Christmas is a lot of ‘one upmanship’ isn’t it.

Look at me, I’m so conscientious and better than you!

Really not the Christmas spirit OP.

Don’t send cards if you don’t want to. But mock people who do? And because they don’t make enough of an effort? I’m hoping you are not friend or relation of mine!

Not where I live you can’t.

But the point is.

I’ve made a bloody effort with your Christmas card. Whoever receives one from me. Yes it’s recycled. Yes it’s for charity. Yes my son drew the picture and they print it for his school. Yes it does keep a bit of physical written care alive. I send it because I care about you. For me it’s to say you are one of the people I treasure in life. And no I don’t write a personal message in every one. I didn’t send any the last few years. But this time I’ve chosen to.

But if anyone is going to look down their snotty nose at me, as a recipient. You can eff off!

BananaPyjamaLlama · 11/12/2023 15:31

I dont like round robins but if they are going to going to the bother of sending a card Id far rather they included a few lines about what they've been up to. Seems like a waste of time and an environmental waste just to send cards that say "love xyz"

PieAndLattes · 11/12/2023 15:33

What do you want them to write? Do you really care that Tabitha got into the school netball team or Orlando dug a well in Nepal? I’m amazed you’re still getting cards at all. We neither get nor send them apart from the few from relatives with cash in them - now those the children do like!

Shakeylegs · 11/12/2023 15:35

margotrose · 11/12/2023 15:02

Isn't it likely to be both?

People send cards because it's expected, but that doesn't mean they don't also care about the people they're sending them to.

The expectation that someone will send a card, any card, with no thought as to what’s written inside it at all, is the worst kind of tradition-for-tradition’s-sake nonsense.
Just don’t bother.

If you genuinely care then think about what you’re writing.

Togekiss · 11/12/2023 15:35

I do this if I’m unsure of a persons name or spelling of said name.

So obviously not to family but maybe school teaching assistants etc (if there’s been a change in staffing during the year and whatnot where I might not be 100% sure and have seen the names written down).

I have a name that is spelt wrong all the time and I just find it easier to leave out the irritation of getting it wrong.

housethatbuiltme · 11/12/2023 15:37

Cards are gifts, only rude people bitch about their gift not being good enough.

What do you want? war and peace penned personally for you? thats not what cards have ever been about. Even in Victorian card collections they don't have a tonne of writing in, its always been that the printed message and picture where suppose to convey the thought behind the gifting.

Exactly. A card is a little gift, a tiny token of the season and a nice little tradition.

A facebook message is not the same. But another sign of the lowering of standards.

Topseyt123 · 11/12/2023 15:40

So you want them to write an essay? On each card?

I never did this in all the years I used to write Christmas cards (I no longer do as I just can't be arsed). I just put who it was to/from.

If there are a lot of cards to be written then most people would just trot them out as quickly as possible.

SkySecret · 11/12/2023 15:41

How incredibly ungrateful. Makes me wonder why anyone bothers to send you cards in the first place with that attitude.

Sususudio · 11/12/2023 15:42

I expect people put all their personal stuff on their social media now, so they assume you already know their news and leave it out of the cards.

LBFseBrom · 11/12/2023 15:45

I think it is lovely of a person to think of you, purchase a card, stamp and send to you. I am sure some write a few extra words such as 'Hope all is well with you'. or the like but the card is enough.

Cards are lovely, they add to your Christmas decor and really brighten up a room.

Some people have stopped sending cards because of postage costs and others because of paper waste, the environment etc (or that is what they say). However, I love sending and receiving them. It won't last forever.

There are a couple of people who enclose a letter, sent to everyone on their list, detailing their life over the year, mentioning people I don't know :-). They don't have to do that, I'd be happy with just a card. People who are really close to me keep in touch anyway.

Enjoy your Christmas, op.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 11/12/2023 15:47

I love getting a card. Someone, in their busy life, has stopped and thought of me, even if only briefly. It's a lovely feeling.

Redebs · 11/12/2023 15:47

Many people put their cards up on display in their homes. Sometimes visitors browse them. That's why it's better not to add anything too personal.
And obviously, if you're sending lots of cards, it would take ages to write a special message in each.

Superscientist · 11/12/2023 15:50

I hate when you move to a new house and get a bunch of dear number 10, from Jane and John.

Great Jane and John, who are you? If they had left a house number I probably would return the card and maybe have a chat and become friendly. Instead is suspect you are just doing what you feel obligated to do and don't really care about passing on seasons greetings.

I don't like Christmas cards and only ever send one or two

greencheetah · 11/12/2023 15:52

Your expectations are clearly unrealistic.

The purpose is to bring some cheer to my elderly relatives in India. I hear how they are doing from my cousin (via social media) and they appreciate their annual card from me. They are not part of my day to day life, no, but I think of them and they are a connection to my late father.

BestBadger · 11/12/2023 15:55

Think yourself lucky. I got a text last year from a friend hoping I had a lonely Christmas.

SignoraItaliana · 11/12/2023 15:58

I get a round robin from a couple I haven't seen in decades, it's a mocked up newspaper detaining all their achievements and travels, purported to be written by their cat.

It's so awful, it's actually funny.

I only send cards to my elderly aunts and uncles. Everyone else gets a festive WhatsApp message.

Gettingbysomehow · 11/12/2023 15:59

I hate that OP. I have "friends" that I haven't seen in 10 years still sending me christmas cards with nothing in but "Dave", his name nothing else. He knows I've had a really hard time yet cannot be arsed to say are you ok or lets talk soon.
I want to send it back with "Who are you" written on the front. Cheap and nasty card too.
I always put a message inside and some cheerful news. It doesn't take 5 seconds.

Maybe he's trying to send some cheer that doesn't include a reference to dismal topics.

Someone's begging for a missive from Janet and Roy.... anyone?
