Am I the only person who can't stand the word fanny?

I find the word fanny ick and uncomfortable. I really cringe when people use it. It just sounds vile and reminds me of like a big fat builder fanny or something weird like that (I know, what is wrong with me!?) But seriously is anyone else the same?

What other words make you cringe??

Doesn't bother me in the slightest. I think it's better than some other words used.

I agree and way better than the C word.

Here in Scotland we love calling people fannies . It makes me laugh. I don’t like it as a serious reference to vulva/vagina though.

Ya coupla faaaaaaaaannies. 😆

TR888 · 11/12/2023 12:18

I don't think there's a "good" word for it. Vagina is incorrect to refer to a vulva. But vulva sounds too medical. I end up saying "bits", which I don't like either...

If you loathe it so much why do you type it out in full yet refer to the less offensive word a s 'the c word'?

Mainly because a lot of people have a visceral dislike of the word cunt.

Happy?

I was just asking a question. No need to be so defensive.

I wasn't I was just answering your question. It felt like a bit of a goady gotcha from someone spoiling for a row. I've got no problem with the word cunt I just don't want to needlessly upset people.

Verv · 11/12/2023 12:31

I use fanny in the Scottish context - ack he's a total fanny, stop fanning about etc so it's a total non event word for me.

The one I find most cringey is "pussy"

Pinkywoo · 11/12/2023 12:38

Surely fanny is just the equivalent of willy? It was the normal thing to call it when I was a kid, much better than all these stupid twee names like fairy, daisy, flower etc.

BloominFlower · 11/12/2023 15:01

I’m not a huge fan per se, but it’s better than a lot of other demeaning words like ‘Snatch, Growler, cunt, twat’ etc. I don’t mind using the term fanny. When teaching my son I used vulva and willy

No, definitely not where I'm from! Willy is innocuous and normal for kids to say but fanny is much more vulgar - like hearing a young child talk about their minge or something.

I'm from Glasgow so often call people fannies and I tell DH to stop fannying about when we're running late, but it's such a grim word to use in reference to genitals.

It makes no sense to me though, both are old fashioned people names, why is it only the one for female genitalia that's offensive?

Same here

museumum · 11/12/2023 16:20

Fanny to me is more the equivalent of Dick than Willy.
But isn't it weird these normal people names have such cultural baggage...

KinS24 · 11/12/2023 16:22

Am quite fond of Fanny. It’s in the saucy seaside postcard camp.
I refer to mine as my Volvo.

YoureALizardHarry11 · 11/12/2023 16:25

Don’t mind fanny, and use it when I’m referring to the vagina, but cannot stand pussy. If I was getting intimate with someone and they referred to my pussy I would close up quicker than a Venus fly trap 🤮🤮🤮

reesewithoutaspoon · 11/12/2023 16:25

I can't bare the word pussy when it's used to refer to female anatomy and to getting sex. Makes me cringe

Groovee · 11/12/2023 16:26

Jobby for me!

Me too! If there’s two names I hate it’s cock and pussy! Too aggressive sounding

I can’t explain why I hate pussy, it just feels so cringeworthy. I just can’t stand it 🤣

AmiablePedant · 11/12/2023 16:31

In fact for a very long time Fanny was a perfectly acceptable shortened version of the name Frances (anybody remember sensible Fanny in the Nancy Mitford novels?).

But I personally hate it as either "vagina" or "backside." Weird visceral irrational hatred.

RealBigBarbie · 11/12/2023 16:32

I really, really HATE willy

It's a minefield.

I don't mind pussy in a sexual context. But if in an intimate moment a man referred to my fanny or my minge I think that would be an absolute passion killer.

Urgh minge is another one 🤮 or clunge!

CurlewKate · 11/12/2023 16:51

I hate it too. All the words for vagina/vulva sound crude and disrespectful to me.

Grapefruitstars · 11/12/2023 16:52

I hate the word pussy. Reminds me of infection.
