To enjoy watching Love Actually

Just watched Love Actually for the umpteenth time. Thoroughly enjoyed it as usual and got me in the festive spirit.

Yes, the plot(s) is full of holes and mostly ridiculous! However, there are some great moments such as the Emma Thompson scene when she gets the CD instead of the necklace and lots of funny moments (Rowen Atkinson, Bill Nighy etc). My teen DD watching for the first time pointed out the sexism and the fat shaming (but still quite enjoyed it). She's not wrong, but meh! AIBU?

Seriously Deadringer? (Sorry if English not your first language.) Those lines aren’t meant to be taken literally. It’s the way middle class English folk dead pan sarcastically and josh one another. It’s a sign of affection.

I get that they are not meant to be taken literally, and its supposed to be funny, but it just isn't.

LadyBird1973 · 11/12/2023 11:18

It depends on the relationships between the people as to whether it's appropriate or not. I don't think those lines are meant to be funny, just how those people interact with each other.

oh I watched the carry on Programme last night the actors were done over whilst the studio and producers made an absolute fortune!

Yep, and the women were paid half of what the men were!

Oh well each to their own I guess!

I love it, its just a film, there's no need to be so uptight about it

I can't bear American Christmas movies, they're enough to give you diabetes. Full of cookie-cutter characters with no depth and no real humour to cut through all the schmalz. Like being force fed cheap chocolate.

They really are all the same. Spot on description.

TheCadoganArms · 11/12/2023 12:16

LadyBird1973 · 10/12/2023 18:28

I like it and don't think Richard Curtis should have apologised for it.
Women who are smaller than a size 12, often do think women who are bigger than them are fat. Clearly MM isn't, it's just reflecting how people can be irl.

Colin is a piss take of British men, who have heard that American women like British accents. As if he'd ever stand a chance with any of those women.

The porn actors are funny - it's the idea that love can find you in the weirdest of circumstances!

Laura Linney's story is that family is important, more important than some bloke who can't even be arsed to find out her story and wait for her.

Emma Thompson - massively annoying irl but a cracking actress. That present scene is amazing.

Andrew Lincoln can't help that he loves his friend's wife. He's not a stalker - that would be following her home from work and making a pest of himself. He tells her how he feels, she's clearly flattered. They both move on.

The only one I'm not keen on is Liam Neeson, getting over his poor wife's death in 5 minutes flat and eyeing up Claudia Schiffer.

My memory of this might be hazy as I have not seen the film for a while but I am pretty sure she only realises his love for her when they are watching the wedding video he made and notices that all the footage is close ups of her. I think the whole infatuation with your best mates wife storyline is a bit ickky.

Yep even more icky as Keira was 17 and Andrew Lincoln was 30.

Clawdy · 11/12/2023 12:46

Keira K was actually 18, but I agree it's a bit of a gap. In the film, though, he certainly doesn't look much older than her!

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 11/12/2023 12:53

Full confession: I’m ten years older than my 21-year-old boyfriend. I think casting an eighteen-year-old getting married to a thirtyish man (assuming that the two men probably are similar ages) and being creeped on/borderline stalked by another is slightly odd, and the creepy dynamic is a big part of that. The age gap isn’t TOO awful but I think there’s a huge leap in maturity on leaving school, which KK at her age theoretically hasn’t had yet.

theconfidenceofwho · 11/12/2023 14:26

Keira Knightley looked about 30 in it though - it wasn't portrayed as an age gap relationship so nothing inappropriate with it. I wouldn't have known she was so young if it weren't for these threads!

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 11/12/2023 14:29

This is true - she hasn’t aged much but looked very mature in this film, I didn’t clock it as an age gap initially.

SomeoneYouLoved · 11/12/2023 14:33

I only saw it for the first time recently and l loved it.

LadyBird1973 · 11/12/2023 14:34

The Andrew Lincoln character avoids her most of the time, to the extent she thinks he doesn't like her. It's not like he was trying to chat her up behind his friend's back. People don't always fall for the person they should. I thought that although KK was young irl, I assumed her character was early 20s.

Friends apparently. Also said to be friends with Sarah but I didn't catch either of those connections at all in all these years!

He’s sitting next to Sarah at the wedding, right at the beginning.

When Micheal Parkinson died BBC Four showed some of his interviews. Including a snippet of one with Shirley Maclaine She talked about the Hays Code. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hays_Code

Interestingly she said that while this code was in force actresses were getting meaty parts as judges and lawyers doctors etc.
When the code was lifted "most of our roles included being in the bedroom, We just couldnt get out of the bedroom"

Love the film and watch it every year in lighthearted way as yes agree lots of things inappropriate but overall it makes me laugh (Rowan Atkinson is fantastic and we often act out that making someone wait and always adding something else bit). The film is full of details that you notice over time.

I absolutely love the Christmas octopus child, havi ngworked in a primary school where the annual nativity always caused high emotion re casting😂. Unlike everyone else on here the part I most disliked was Emma Thompson being tearful as I wanted her to be really angry and strong. Also loathed creepy Brit man in USA. And so annoyed with woman with brother for turning down lovely chap - come on!

Martine McCutcheon is fab and love it when Hugh Grant goes to look for her. To the taxi driver: “thingy road - the dodgy end”

Feel like watching it tonight now.

stomachameleon · 11/12/2023 16:44

It’s amazing how angry people get when someone challenges their underthinkin @Bicorne what a mean thing to say....

This is the thing, they are actors. There is only an age gap if the story says their is an age gap. If it's not part of the story, and you can't tell, there is no age gap.

It's not "creepy" because they are not actually involved.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 14/12/2023 01:33

I think I was vaguely on your side there, and I have a LOT of problems with love actually but none of them are Keira Knightley playing a mature woman getting married. As long as she was looked after on set properly I actually can’t see the problem there.

Clawdy · 14/12/2023 08:06

He was hardly "stalking" her, he loved her , but she was his best friend's wife so he tried to ignore her and pretend he didn't like her. But during the wedding, he couldn't resist filming her looking lovely, as he was so in love. He knows they can never be together.

1975wasthebest · 14/12/2023 08:39

Of course he wasn’t stalking her! Would the police be interested if Juliet called the police about him?I don’t think so!

Honestly, some people on this thread should lighten up.
