To enjoy watching Love Actually

Just watched Love Actually for the umpteenth time. Thoroughly enjoyed it as usual and got me in the festive spirit.

Yes, the plot(s) is full of holes and mostly ridiculous! However, there are some great moments such as the Emma Thompson scene when she gets the CD instead of the necklace and lots of funny moments (Rowen Atkinson, Bill Nighy etc). My teen DD watching for the first time pointed out the sexism and the fat shaming (but still quite enjoyed it). She's not wrong, but meh! AIBU?

It is problematic but still a good watch, like quite a lot of things from that era.

Cece92 · 10/12/2023 16:12

It's my fave outlet festive film I'm a sucker for it lol xx

Mrsjayy · 10/12/2023 16:15

does it show the "body double " actors in the afternoon I've only watched it at night and always thought that was the weirdest story !

Luddite26 · 10/12/2023 16:15

I have just watched and fought with myself. How sexist, fat shaming, the president what did he do to Martine? absolutely everything that is wrong with the film 20 years on.
But Hugh Grant doing the pointer sisters dance just made me ignore all the voices in my head and I totally warmed to it while ironing away. Made a coffee for the last bit and had a good cry.
It's so dated though.

Luddite26 · 10/12/2023 16:17

Such a bygone era.
I was actually looking on Mumsnet to see if this thread was already going!

CreepyDibillo · 10/12/2023 16:19

I've watched it this afternoon too, I still love it. Yes, it's problematic in certain areas, eg the fat shaming , but it's a lovely film about human relationships. I can't let December pass each year without watching it.

Mrsjayy · 10/12/2023 16:19

some of it is great other bits are so bizarre and offensive !

Rorlaa · 10/12/2023 16:20

Still one of the best chistmas movies! NBU at all! <3

TheCadoganArms · 10/12/2023 16:21

The Andrew Lincoln stalking Kiera Knightly story line has aged as well as a five day old festival toilet.

1975wasthebest · 10/12/2023 16:22

I don’t see anything problematic with it at all. Is murder offensive in a film? Paedophilia? Theft? Where do you draw the line about what’s offensive?

I don’t take Love Actually seriously and never have done, it’s just a very entertaining film.

HairdryerMary · 10/12/2023 16:22

I love it all. Yes it's dated sexist shit but so is Some Like it Hot, Breakfast at Tiffany's and Grease.

Dweetfidilove · 10/12/2023 16:23

Love It - always on my Christmas list.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 10/12/2023 16:23

Lots of films and books are problematic whilst still being enjoyable.

It's fine as long as you recognise the problems and understand why they are problems

RedRobyn2021 · 10/12/2023 16:24

I agree with your DD but I still really enjoy it

cadburyegg · 10/12/2023 16:25

It's problematic and hasn't aged well. I still love watching it though, in fact I am going to do so tonight 🥰 I can still enjoy it whilst being aware of its (many) faults.

But I don’t, in the case of Love Actually. Guess that’s my ‘problem’, though.

fingerguns · 10/12/2023 16:26

I watched it a couple of days ago and it was still enjoyable! Could somebody please explain to me how Colin Firth relates to everyone? Is he Keira Knightly's cousin?

Dutch1e · 10/12/2023 16:28

Oh god I'm with you OP! It's such a problematic film but my (grown) daughter and I still watch it without fail every Christmas Night, even if we are in different houses and watch it while sitting on the phone with each other after everyone else has gone to bed.

I won't let my 12 yr old son watch it as I'd have to tear it to shreds in a series of teaching moments and I can't be bothered. I just want to enjoy the lovely parts.

BeadedBubbles · 10/12/2023 16:29

Love it - watched it loads of times! It's like a comfort blanket.

My favourite bit is Hugh Grant's face when the policeman joins in with singing for the little girls when they're knocking on doors.

Not even the creepy Andrew Lincoln part?

Lol. Noticed that for the first time, love how I see new things each time I watch it!

Friends apparently. Also said to be friends with Sarah but I didn't catch either of those connections at all in all these years!
