Can anyone tell me what hospital are looking for when they do a lumbar puncture on a five day old baby?

I’m not a medical professional but from my understanding it will be to check for meningitis. Sorry to hear that dc is so poorly.

@Cantfindthewordsddstruggling thank you.

Also not a medic but agree - when my 10 day old fell ill he had a lumbar puncture to check for meningitis. He was fine in the end - hope the DC you're concerned about is well soon.

Baby has an eye roll that doctors are concerned about, think she may have had a fit.

It will be to look for infection. Is this your baby? I’m sure the staff will explain in detail, especially if the information so far isn’t clear. There can be a lot to take in so it’s ok to ask.
Its sometimes a routine part of the full tests done for infection, they might call it an infection screen, or the baby might have symptoms that could be caused by meningitis- high pitched cry, poor colour, lethargy

Sorry, just saw your update. Much better to check and treat early. We are always really cautious with babies

@JustAlittlebitofsparkle no, not my baby. As far as I know, no meningitis suspected. Baby is ICU and hospital said they spotted a little something this morning and did a lumbar puncture.
