AIBU to think they should replace the Christmas tree?

Hi all,

Apologies for any mistakes - English is my second language.

I bought a real Christmas tree at our local farmer’s shop few days ago, kids got all exited about decorating it this evening - only for us to find out that every single tip of every branch is chopped off (I’m assuming to make Christmas wreaths)

AIBU to contact the shop and ask to replace it?

DH says to leave it but it annoys me - I don't want a butchered Christmas tree.
It is quite visible (at least to me) and can’t really be covered with baubles etc

AIBU to think they should replace the Christmas tree?

How is that not a fair comparison you pay money for both lol. Some of the responses here are so weird. You pay money toward something and take it home and not happy with it after further investigation. I took a jumper back to TKMaxx last week when I noticed a hole in it and should I have just suck it up according to mn lol because there are people far worse which why I wouldn't settle down because I don't have money to throw wearing a jumper that is faulty and flawed by TKmaxx. I swear some posters live in some weird parallel dimension.

I see your post has garnered the "I'm ticked at my life, DH, DP, DC" crowd. They are nitpicking your post because they are taking out their dissatisfaction with their life on you. Pay no mind to them.

I would contact the seller and ask how you can cover the chopped ends. Let them offer a solution. You have a right to be dissatisfied.

We also use live candles on our tree and there's no way to position them if the tips are gone.

Do you mean you light candle on your tree? That sounds highly dangerous, sorry if I have misunderstood, but would hate for anyone's tree to go up in flames !

OP if you aren't happy with your tree, get a replacement, it doesn't really matter what a bunch of strangers on the internet think.

Our tree came from B&M and was £15. It had some branch tips loped in the same way. They don't sell wreaths though. The tree itself look OK.

I wondered if it was a different type of tree that has mad rogue branches that needed trimming? Or maybe the shite weather this year has caused trees to grow in much less regular manner?

That sounds crap Op. I would be annoyed as well if I had spent £65.

I wouldn't be happy either. I'm only buying a tree for aesthetic benefits so one with loads of tips missing is definitely not going to fit my ideal!

I also couldn't be facing taking it back to the shop either though so would have to content myself with going in there and telling them that I was really unhappy with their selling ethics; that the fact that they believe it is ok to sell a tree that they have done this too without specifically mending it, means they have ethics that I don't feel comfortable with and I won't be shopping there anymore.

I hope you come to love your disfigured tree and have a great Christmas x

MarmeladeKing · 10/12/2023 19:38

*Without specifically mentioning it, sorry

GingerNutMe · 10/12/2023 19:56

I don't think you make wreaths with the snipped off ends of a Christmas tree do they really - now if every other branch was missing that might be a different story!!!

Pinkfluff76 · 10/12/2023 22:23

I’d want a new one. Regardless of it being first world problems you’d want a lovely tree and I’m sure paid good money for it!

I noticed that the Christmas trees in our garden centre seemed to have lots of the tips of branches trimmed off and asked someone who worked there why. They said it is done to shape the trees to make them a more regular shape. I really didn't like the way it looked. I have noticed that that garden centre tends to get irregular shaped trees, whereas another place local to us always has beautifully shaped trees. They cost roughly the same price, so I suspect it's down to a better relationship with their suppliers. I'd shop around next year OP.

Hi OP,

Your English is perfectly good enough!
Also I agree with you!
I would be annoyed with a tree like this after forking out £65.
I would probably call the farm shop and have a chat with them and ask why they did this and see whether they give you a redund/ partial refund or would exchange the tree.
Personally I could possibly not be bothered to stick it back on the car to return it.
But I also have to say I always look at a tree before I.buy it. ( even if thenhave to take the mesh stuff off first)
But we also buy our tree from a local guy who grows them.so we pick them out ourself.
And I usually choose one that's to tall.and then I thank the lucky stars for my status going on the top 😁 as I usually chop.a bit of tip off.
