AIBU to think they should replace the Christmas tree?

Hi all,

Apologies for any mistakes - English is my second language.

I bought a real Christmas tree at our local farmer’s shop few days ago, kids got all exited about decorating it this evening - only for us to find out that every single tip of every branch is chopped off (I’m assuming to make Christmas wreaths)

AIBU to contact the shop and ask to replace it?

DH says to leave it but it annoys me - I don't want a butchered Christmas tree.
It is quite visible (at least to me) and can’t really be covered with baubles etc

AIBU to think they should replace the Christmas tree?

I know you can’t take a pic Of the entire tree from each angle. That pic is better but ideally we need to see a pick from further away to see how much the snipped bits impact the overall tree.

I agree it’s not great but as we’ve all said, you picked it! I didn’t notice snipped more on any of the trees in the farm where we went- and they def sold a lot of wreaths too.

StillWantingADog · 09/12/2023 21:26

Wel plenty of tips are def intact so you were unreasonable to say and imply “every single tip”

LOL - some people are starving and cold this Christmas.

How is that ops fault?

People saying ‘it’s not every tip’ - I assume OP means that it’s the end of every main branch that is snipped (not all the sub branches).
This would really annoy me too, but in reality I’d not do anything about it, life is too short to drag it back. Maybe go over some of the cut bits with a dark brown marker or brown shoe polish if they are standing out?
They probably won’t be noticeable in the evenings with the lights on.

Yes, that what I meant, sorry!
The end bit of every main branch

thank you, Scattered

My parents sold Christmas trees every December when I was a kid, grown on my uncles farm. They did used to cut branches off the trees to make wreaths but IT was the bottom most, longest branches so the trunk had 12-18 inches of empty trunk to go into a stand. Then the branches were laid out and over lapped to make a line around 130cm and twisted and formed into a ring and secured with wire. Stay broken branches would be used to pack them out then bare spots infilled with cheap baubles and ribbon. You can't make a wreath just using branch tips. This will 100% have been done to create a uniform shape as 90% of trees that aren't intensely managed will be uneven and need to be trimmed.

olympicsrock · 09/12/2023 21:37

That is rubbish. Yes take it back

Sœtr · 09/12/2023 21:37

I'd be very miffed too! I like my trees all natural shape even if wonky!
Just a thought but don't trees get marked down in price dramatically after a certain date? Then maybe can get a nicer one and put the poor snipped one outside with some lights if that was feasible?
Happy xmas when it comes all x

I don't think it even meets the threshold to be considered a "problem".

You've never been disappointed with a purchase and wanted your money back?

DdraigGoch · 09/12/2023 21:40

I can't see the problem, plenty of tips left and it'll be covered in tinsel anyway.

RockinAroundthejoint · 09/12/2023 21:40

Its very common for the ends of many of the branches to be trimmed. Its more visible in bigger trees. Sometimes you see older timing which had 'healed ' over and blended in and sometimes is completely fresh. It's the compromise you make for a larger tree that isn't like a triffid monster that doesn't cost severall hundreds of pounds.

To get around this you simply buy lengths of florist wire ( amazon has them), thread them thread onto your bauble at one end ( often fixing 2vl or three together and wind these around the stumpy ends. It looks wonderful and is the way every professionally decorated tree is done. Put your mind to it and you can make every tree look beautiful!

user628468523532453 · 09/12/2023 21:57

Where is the photo of the whole tree so we can see its shape? It cannot be that difficult to take a photo of a Christmas tree.

If you spend, say, £60 turkey at, let’s say, Tesco’s and turned out it has gone off, would you also think “suck it up, not their fault I didn't look”?

No because that could kill you. Your tree will not kill you and has given its life so treasure it

You do realise how long the pieces they use for wreaths are? Far longer than just bits snipped off the ends. They use entire branches at least 18 inches long from a separate tree that won't be sold.

I don't think you have ever made a wreath.

What 18inch branches?🤨 I mean, how big is your door exactly?🧐

I think it would send a poor message to your kids to send the tree they are so excited about back because it's missing some branches so you don't think it's good enough.

saraclara · 09/12/2023 22:08

I've never seen a tree butchered like that, and I'm another that doesn't get why there's a pile on here. That branch has been cut at a junction where four or more sprigs are formed. It looks ridiculous. If there are multiple branches that look like that, it shouldn't have been sold that way.

Trimming is all very well, but you don't chop a fir tree at a junction like that, and you certainly don't do it multiple times. .

Christmas trees are expensive. If you pay £60 for something, get it home and find faults, then you expect to be able to return it. I don't know why the majority of responses regard a Christmas tree as somehow different.

I think it’s for the wreaths, rather than to shape the tree. The tree itself is quite lovely and nice regular shape.

They sell wreaths too.

did you choose the tree ?

If no one wants that tree it will be sad and lonely and left til the end and then just chipped without being festooned in light and loved. You can't bring it into your home and then discard it.

shams05 · 09/12/2023 22:11

Just contact the place you bought it from, speak to someone over the phone.

If you buy your tree from them every year I'm sure they'll sort it for you.

What is wrong with people (on MN) at the moment? So many whiny posts about absolutely nothing.

Schmusimausi73 · 09/12/2023 22:11

I would love to have your problems…

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 09/12/2023 22:13

Yeh I'd be pissed off at that!

I feel that pile on is because i’m a foreigner - it is something i notice quite regularly on here: responses are usually harsher and OP is often ridiculed even if AIBU is completely valid

@BloodOrangeCheesecake yeah that looks awful. I have a real tree and none of the main branches haven’t been cut like that.

how much did they charge? What height is it?

I think the pile on is because of nothing of the sort. You claimed every single tip of your Christmas tree had been cut off and have posted a picture with three "cuts" visible and all the other many, many tips remaining.

How am i whiny?
I spent £65 on this tree and every tip of every main branch is chopped off.

People moan about about couple of quid on here.

If i wanted to buy butchered tree, i’d have bought it in discounted section of local B&Q on 23rd Dec for a fiver.
