One year old poo..?! Had enough

Ds is nearly 14 months. He poos around 4 times a day on average. It’s usually loose and lots of it. Had lots of tests to check if something is wrong but all come back fine. I can’t understand how this is normal?! It’s my first and I can’t stand the nappies so maybe I’m just not up to speed on the realities but is this normal? I thought by now it would be once a day max and proper hard stools

jemenfous37 · 09/12/2023 08:46

well you don't want hard stools! Stools should be soft yet formed.

contactus · 09/12/2023 08:46

what tests has this very normal baby had?

whatbowv · 09/12/2023 08:47

@jemenfous37 its more on the runny side though. Surely should be more formed

contactus · 09/12/2023 08:47

odd you don’t mention his diet?

whatbowv · 09/12/2023 08:47

@contactus allergy testing, infection etc all came back fine

OP posts:
DixonD · 09/12/2023 08:48

No, it’s normal. They’re barely eating solid foods at that age. Are you breastfeeding?

whatbowv · 09/12/2023 08:48

@contactus diet is normal I think?! No purées or anything like that it’s all proper food so he would have broccoli, potatoes and fish for example. He does still drink formula though

OP posts:
whatbowv · 09/12/2023 08:49

@DixonD he is eating all solids though now, except still on formula. I don’t understand it. It’s not like he has purées.

on the basis he does 4x bowel movements a day?

contactus · 09/12/2023 08:50

is he at nursery?

LittleBearPad · 09/12/2023 08:50

He doesn’t need to be on formula at 14 months, milk will be fine.

It really isn’t that odd

SpaceChocolatel · 09/12/2023 08:51

Mine have been like this. Looks more formed now it's in the potty but always at least twice a day and seemed very soft when it was in the nappy. If diet and appetite are fine and they're growing well I don't think its anything to worry about. It will get less frequent as they grow.

TheSandgroper · 09/12/2023 08:52

Yeah at this age, nappies should be more regular. I don’t know if you need a referral for a dietitian in the NHS but I think it’s time for one. Just so you know, doctors don’t spend much time learning about food intolerances and allergies.

@contactus no on the basis the stools were so runny and an odd colour. The colour is normal now but it just seems like a lot of nappy changes for a toddler? When out with mum friends I am regularly changing nappies when the others just turn up and go home without even needing to!

Why do you think it should be just once a day now OP?

I'm sure DC was pooping fairly prolifically well up to age 3 or beyond.

He's just a baby!!

whatbowv · 09/12/2023 08:54

@contactus no not at nursery yet

Gabby10 · 09/12/2023 08:54

It may not be linked but I noticed my DD stopped pooing so often when she switched from formula to cows milk. Now your son's over 12 mo switch to cows milk, will also save you a load as well!

@Treacletoots ive always heard when they get to toddler stage it was less frequent?! I feel like when we go out we have to know there’s baby changing even if it’s to a supermarket. I really thought that phase would be over by now

@Gabby10 thanks I will try this

We had this with DD - toddler Diarrhoea. She would poo multiple times a day. She wasn’t distressed but she did get a bit sore.

We cut out citrus fruit and stopped her multi vitamin - we thought she maybe couldn’t cope with the vitamin c.

The doctor said she could take a probiotic to help with gut health and I think we did that for a while. She eventually grew out of it but even now she is a teenager if she needs to get things moving she just has a large glass of orange juice!

ChimChimeny · 09/12/2023 08:57

DD was a bit like this when she had a weetabix for breakfast, with porridge she was a lot less loose

jannier · 09/12/2023 08:58

It can be toddler diarrhea many get it not infectious.
Why is he on formula?

Leafysuburb · 09/12/2023 09:00

Allergy tests only pick up ige-mediated allergies. Non-ige allergies which affect digestion won't show up on tests. For us it was a dairy allergy causing the multiple poos.

bigpawsjames · 09/12/2023 09:05

My 13mo poos once a day and it is formed. Like an adult poo! So I think you're right to investigate

Cindy1802 · 09/12/2023 09:17

Hi OP, sounds like toddler diarrhoea to me. Sorry for all the people saying you shouldn't be frustrated, I've been there and it's relentless. Also makes potty training really difficult so you are right to question it.

My son started with frequent and very soft poos after he turned roughly 1, and we didn't think much of it until it started to be relentless. He then went through a period of very watery stools, up to 8 times a day when he was 18 months. Nursery sent him home understandably, but there was nothing else wrong with him so we went to the GP - he also had an extremely sore bum from all the poos. They did some tests and diagnosed him with toddler diarrhoea.

We did some work ourselves in trying to eliminate what the trigger was for him - and turns out its very high fibre foods - e.g. weetabix, shreddies. Cut that out and it made a big difference, back to 3 ish poos a day and no more sore bum.

Fast forward to age 2.5 when we tried potty training - and we realised that his stools were still too loose for him to have any control over his poos. So we stopped training and looked at his diet again. We removed cows milk and subbed in oat or soya - and wow it made a huge difference - he's pooing actual stools for the first time since he was about 1. Potty training was a success.

He's now almost 3, and weetabix etc still will set him off - he's on the toilet a lot if he manages to steal some of nanas weetabix (who often forgets he can't have it 🙄). We saw a peadiatrician a while ago about something else but chatted about his toddler diarrhoea, and he said he will grow out of it at some point, so we can try and slowly reintroduce milk and the high fibre foods when we are ready. We're in no rush though, he is still able to have other diary products (yogurt, cheese etc) so we have no concerns over his calcium intake etc.

Hope this is helpful - good luck!
