Do I tell them what their baby name means?

Name changed as very outing.

A friend has just named her newborn Mari-Jane. Do I tell her that it's a very well-known slang name for marijuana especially with the spelling Mari? I realise the pronunciation is slightly different but there will be people who pronounce it as "Mary" and she will just be known as Mary-Jane. Am I the only one who thinks she needs a heads up before registering the baby's name? I realise that most names can have quite creative nicknames and there will be plenty of people who don't know that it means marijuana but I feel like this is just asking for mockery.

Thoughts?

I’m assuming Charlie?

I’d possibly joke that Mari sounds like Mary and that she’ll probably love that it sounds like Mary Jane when she’s older due to it being slang for weed.
Instead of saying it in a negative way.

I think the name Mari (marry) is quite an odd first name and lots of people are going to call her Mary.

silverbubbles · 08/12/2023 14:51

Never heard of this. I would think of the shoe

ManateeFair · 08/12/2023 14:51

Hardly anyone at all uses 'Mary-Jane' to mean weed. I know it's a term that was thrown around a bit in the 60s/70s - much more in America than in the UK - but I've literally never heard anyone actually refer it to as that in a real-life conversation.

This isn't something I'd worry about.

ButterCupPie · 08/12/2023 14:51

spiderlight · 08/12/2023 14:44

Is she Welsh? 'Mari' is a variant of Mary/Mair in Wales - I know a couple, both adults, but it's not uncommon and it wouldn't occur to me to make any associations with marijuana.

Wasn't Marie Lloyd's first name pronounced that way? That is, MAHree, not MaREE?

oakleaffy · 08/12/2023 14:51

It’s an American term, very Oldskool. Mary Jane is marginally better than Mari

Maybe they are weed users?
Marij Ane? 😬

Birch101 · 08/12/2023 14:53

Sweet Mary Jane... er yeah tell her!

Duvetdayforme · 08/12/2023 14:53

I work in a college and young people most definitely use the term Mari Jane or MJ for weed.

They’ll probably change it to Molly 😂
I would tell her.

QueSyrahSyrah · 08/12/2023 14:53

I'm 40, haven't exactly led a sheltered life, have genuinely never heard that name as a euphemism for weed (although I've heard lots of other nicknames or pseudonyms for it).

Lwrenagain · 08/12/2023 14:53

Tom petty's song last dance with Mary Jane springs to mind.

Catza · 08/12/2023 14:54

imnotacelebrityleavemehere · 08/12/2023 14:14

Okay I don't think I'll tell her. I'm not one for confrontation and if she reacts badly then I don't want to ruin the friendship. As PP have mentioned, lots of names have other meanings or nicknames, I just think some are more obvious than others.

Unfortunately though her brother does have another slang name for a different drug!

Is he called Charlie?
Maybe it's a family tradition. If they have another girl, they can call her Molly to get a full set.

The Devil’s 🥬 Lettuce!

Mothership4two · 08/12/2023 14:57

Didn't know that slang name and it will probably go out of my head.

I do know a John Thomas in his 70s when that name was slang for penis. Used in Lady Chatterly's Lover too. Don't think it affected his life much

SophieinParis · 08/12/2023 15:00

It’s quite an old school slang word, a bit like ganja or something. I feel it’s London in the 90s.
surprised how many didn’t know tho!!
i think it’s fine to use now

FloofCloud · 08/12/2023 15:04

It's American slang - I wouldn't bother I do t think if she's a bit funny

TeenLifeMum · 08/12/2023 15:05

Wouldn’t occur to me and my 3 teens haven’t heard it either. Maybe regional? These things often are.

toWEEDornottoWEED · 08/12/2023 15:06

NC
I have been smoking weed/hash for a very long time. Not once have I heard it referred to as Mary Jane 🤷🏻‍♀️
Wondering if it's a regional/generational thing 🤔

DryIce · 08/12/2023 15:09

I'm pushing 40 and Mary Jane for weed was old and lame even when I was young!

I wouldn't tell her, plenty of kids around called Molly and Charlie and Harry and no one seems bothered

sweetpickle23 · 08/12/2023 15:09

I am genuinely surprised people have never heard this slang!

Ed Sheeran has a song called Amsterdam (Sweet Mary Jane) about this very thing.

OP I would have said there's no way they don't know this already, until I read some of the responses here.

Also agree that nobody cares about Molly or Charlie or Gary.

ShiteRider · 08/12/2023 15:11

If the kids are called Mary-Jane and Charlie, their parents are either very unlucky or they’re drug users

LlynTegid · 08/12/2023 15:11

I think you should. Out of kindness to the child.

Grumpsy · 08/12/2023 15:12

To me Mary Jane is a type of shoe too 🤷🏻‍♀️

EveryOtherNameTaken · 08/12/2023 15:13

Saying these are my children 'Charlie and Mari-Jane' 😅

Viviennemary · 08/12/2023 15:14

Never heard it. Keep quiet.

Cramlington567 · 08/12/2023 15:20

Nice name Mari. common Japanese name too.
