Do I tell them what their baby name means?

Name changed as very outing.

A friend has just named her newborn Mari-Jane. Do I tell her that it's a very well-known slang name for marijuana especially with the spelling Mari? I realise the pronunciation is slightly different but there will be people who pronounce it as "Mary" and she will just be known as Mary-Jane. Am I the only one who thinks she needs a heads up before registering the baby's name? I realise that most names can have quite creative nicknames and there will be plenty of people who don't know that it means marijuana but I feel like this is just asking for mockery.

Thoughts?

I can't believe so many PPs never knew the connection! I'd think that they were massive potheads, and I'm saying that as a Welsh person, where Mari is very common as it's one of the Welsh forms of Mary.

I didn't know that and I know weed users - it's not a term they use. Other slang names for drugs - yes, like Molly, Charlie but even then I wouldn't make the link. They're just names, and fairly common ones at that.

The spelling is odd, presumably they don't pronounce it 'Mary'. Odd spellings are a pain for the owner of the name but so what. I always have to spell my surname as people assume it's another one that sounds similar.

It is very very old school slang, and most kids these days probably think of shoes or Spider Man's girlfriend. I wouldn't worry.

Marihuana (up to 1890s) - also marijuana (1940s) - Mary Jane (ditto). never seen 'Mari Jane'.

I’m in my 20s and really surprised there are people that don’t know it. It’s like not knowing fag means cigarette - that’s old fashioned too but everyone knows what it means.

Only ever seen it written as Mary-Jane for weed and even saying that makes you sound like one of the beatniks in Hairspray

It's in old song lyrics quite a bit as slang for marijuana, so they're forever even if it's not used in everyday language.

For those asking - I think they're pronouncing it as "Marry" which I realise isn't the same as Mary, it just seems very similar to me. I'm probably overthinking it. I'm not a smoker and don't know all the slang names for drugs but I knew that one! Also in my 30s so I don't think it's a generation thing. I do also associate it with the shoes and it's a pretty name so definitely not insulting it! I think if it was me I would just like to know all the possible nicknames (the good and the bad) before choosing a name.

Is she Welsh? 'Mari' is a variant of Mary/Mair in Wales - I know a couple, both adults, but it's not uncommon and it wouldn't occur to me to make any associations with marijuana.
