To ask about your UTI experiences

I'm currently having one... It's beyond painful (I'm screaming every time I have to go to the toilet). I have severe incontinence and I'm bleeding and even passing clots.

The not very smart receptionist at the GP said it was my period...

Anywho, I've already taken 3 out of 6 pills the GP gave me but I haven't seen any improvement. Could it be something else? I have on and off pain on my left side. Feel a little bit light headed, no fever.

I've never been in so much pain in my life and I've gone through childbirth and c sections!

Could it have spread to your kidneys? I know when I've had a UTI it starts improving as soon as I start antibiotics. Id go back to the doctor and get checked out

Shardonneigghhh · 08/12/2023 11:54

It could be pylonephritis or a kidney stone. If you were my patient i would refer you to a and e.

HamsterBanana · 08/12/2023 11:56

Did they send your sample off to the lab?

It takes 3 days to start to feel better, I had one this week didn't feel better till I finished the course.

raspberryrippleicecream · 08/12/2023 11:56

A and E. I've had many UTIs over the years, and your symptoms are the ones I'm told I should go to A&E with if I get them.

AnnaMagnani · 08/12/2023 11:57

Go to A &E. This isn't a normal UTI.

ChaToilLeam · 08/12/2023 12:00

I had similar this year. First round of antibiotics didn’t do much to help. They had to do more samples and a culture and give me another lot of antibiotics. It had gone to my kidneys for sure, it wasn’t a stone in my case but it was something they checked for. You need urgent investigation, yours sounds even worse than mine was. Back to doc or A&E, you can’t continue to suffer like this.

Vinvertebrate · 08/12/2023 12:03

i agree with A&E but the AB’s rarely work in less than 3 days with me. (Not helpful that they try to only prescribe for 3 days, which makes it come back worse ime…)

Octavia64 · 08/12/2023 12:03

First round of antibiotics doesn't always shift it. Go back to the doc.

In the meantime force as much liquid as you can down you as it dilutes the wee and it won't burn as much. I aim for a pint an hour while I'm awake and alternate between tea, decaf coffee, caffeine free coke and Ribena.

mummyh2016 · 08/12/2023 12:03

The symptoms you have described implies a kidney infection IME, I'd go to A+E (or call 111 but you'll likely be sent to A+E anyway or left for 12 hours). I didn't pass clots though with mine - for that alone I'd go straight to A+E.

chatenoire · 08/12/2023 12:12

I live across the road from an AE, so I might venture there depending on what the GP says. They've already sent the urine sample that showed +++ for blood, and + for leucocytes.

Go to Holland and Barrett and buy D-mannose, it is more effective than antibiotics and will help .

NChance · 08/12/2023 12:39

A&E. I'm currently on antibiotics for a UTI and have blood in my urine
They said if I started passing pure blood or clots to go to a&e and that's from the doctor I saw

ThinWomansBrain · 08/12/2023 12:41

I thought the point of the urine test was to check the type of UTI

When I got them, GP would prescribe the antibiotic for the most common UTI straight away, but on one occasion called back after a couple of days when she had the results and gave an alternate prescription.

Baths will ease temporarily, until the medication kicks in.
The bleeding and clots sound worrying though - was your GP aware of this when you saw them, or a subsequent development?

personally would speak to or see GP again before A&E, unless poor receptionist team is blocking that.

The blood has always been there, it showed up before any pain... It has increased though and then turned into clots.

Being Friday, I know I'd run out of antibiotics by tomorrow which is what worries me the most

If you're bleeding you may have a kidney infection that requires immediate treatment. This shouldn't be delayed.

WonkyFeelings · 08/12/2023 13:21

Go to A&E. it can go very wrong very quickly at this point.

chatenoire · 08/12/2023 13:41

The paramedic at the surgery wants to see me at 5... No clue if that's better or simply go across the road.

OP posts:
WonkyFeelings · 08/12/2023 13:53

At this point you need a urine culture, so it depends on who will get it ordered faster imo.

There's already one being worked on (from yesterday).

Just go now to A+E now. It's not like the surgery can give you intravenous antibiotics.

SarahShorty · 08/12/2023 14:31

I've had UTIs. This doesn't sound like a UTI. If you're in agony and passing clots and it's definitely not your period, you should be in A&E. God speed, OP.

fetchacloth · 08/12/2023 14:43

Hopefully you get the treatment you need and feel better soon 💐

diggermama · 08/12/2023 14:55

If you suffer frequently with UTI's, D-Mannose will change your life. Absolute game changer.

Hope you feel better soon OP.

Babybabybaby3 · 08/12/2023 15:00

No advice other than to say they are the absolute worst/most uncomfortable pain ever! I said last time I felt one coming on that I’d rather go through a csection recovery. I’ve spent full nights in baths/showers before because it hurt less to pee in there 😩 The only preventative solution is to drink excessive amounts of water if you’re prone to them but that obviously doesn’t help you just now. I’ve had so many but only on one occasion did I have one where I got the uncontrollable urge to wee and was literally having to dive for the nearest toilet. I didn’t make it twice! They are brutal! Hope you get it sorted soon

Babybabybaby3 · 08/12/2023 15:01

Also I think UTIs seem to come in a very broad spectrum of extremeness.. some people have had a mild uti before so might think this doesn’t sound like one but others that get them bad will know you can get them as bad as that
