Quiet Walking

FFS please don't pounce on me being out of touch or whatever BUT I recently heard of this 'new trend' of quiet walking without headphones in, without listening to music, without listening to a podcasts or audio book or chatting on the phone just walking... And here I go 'Back in my day it was called going for a walk'

Back in my day it was called getting from A to Z

HoHoHoliday · 08/12/2023 01:54

That's not a new trend, that's just... walking.
What is it with people these days, thinking they are inventing everything all over again. Argh! It drives me mad.
See also - so-called "hacks" on social media. I see them and think, that's not a hack, that's just how people do it, how people have done it for decades.

XenoBitch · 08/12/2023 01:58

I had no idea this was a thing. Sounds ridiculous.

namechangenanny · 08/12/2023 02:08

Hahahahahaha I'll now be wondering how many folk in my local park are quiet walking and how many are, like me, just walking 🚶‍♀️

Devilsmommy · 08/12/2023 02:24

Social media has got alot to answer for🙄

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 08/12/2023 02:29

Yes, and I do it almost every day of my life! Honestly, why do so many young people think they invented something that the rest of us have been doing for years?

So it seems we've been on trend for decades 😎

This nearly tipped me over the edge. My teen announced that this was a thing. It's nuts how they think they have invented something new. I like to try and keep up with all that is new so I can try and understand and keep relevant. However not this " new thing"

FelicityBeedle · 08/12/2023 04:07

But people aren’t saying they invented it, there saying it’s not the norm for them but it’s something worth trying? And because it’s new to them, they’ve given it a name.

There are a lot of things which aren't the norm for me and I've never tried. I don't presume to give them a "name" however just because of that.

Quiet walking is just walking, whether you've done it before or not.

chatw0o0 · 08/12/2023 05:21

that's how I walk every day! I can't do it with headphones on, as I like to be aware when crossing the road (etc).

Glittertwins · 08/12/2023 05:42

Probably dreamt up by another online person desperately trying to put a label on a common everyday occurrence in a bid for popularity.

TheSuggestedAmendment · 08/12/2023 05:44

Cue a million articles about Quiet Walking: this year’s Wild Swimming.

I saw one the other day - a hack to help dry your washing in winter with a little known function on your washing machine.

Said hack was use the spin function to do an extra spin !!!

No doubt announced with a headline along the lines of:
"Influencer explains how she relaxes on a walk and the Internet is AMAZED"

ANightingale · 08/12/2023 07:19

What? That's how I always walk anyway. I don't need noise constantly dinning in my ears or a phone getting in the way.

I've never driven a car - I wonder if I should invent 'driving'?😃

MsClarice · 08/12/2023 07:22

It's only a thing if there's an App, which you pay for.

YungWarthog · 08/12/2023 07:22

I think it’s because people are so used to having their phones when walking or running, listening to podcasts/music/audiobooks or having a conversation or scrolling SM that they don’t take in their surroundings and appreciate nature etc.
Taking a walk is in a green space is often recommended to lift your mood but it won’t have as much effect if you don’t pay attention to your environment due to being distracted by your phone. So yes, it probably is a new thing for the younger generation, who cannot function without a phone!

Yes re the wild swimming. Near us there are people who have been swimming almost daily in the sea for donkeys years. One is now in their nineties.

fartyklart · 08/12/2023 07:23

If it makes the kids try it, and maybe even decide to do it most of the time as they enjoy it, then I'm all for it!

Imagine being so terminally online that you give walking 'a name'.

My lovely neighbour posted on our local Facebook page a while back suggesting that people should try going headphones free and interact with all the seasonally changing sights and sounds in our area. It was lighthearted and well meant. Possibly directed at me in my giant headphones as I pause my audiobook to say hello and pet her dogs🤣 Anyway, I must tell her there's now a name for it.
