Neighbour reported us to the council

We moved in 18(ish) months ago (semidetached) and we’ve been renovating the whole house. The last weekend we had builders in who worked until 8pm.

They worked that late as this was the last day of completing all the big jobs in the house. Apart from that one day we’ve only had work done between 8am and 4pm. Just one night we didn’t and she reported us. Aibu?

Unless you spoke to them first then YABU and pretty selfish tbh. If they reported you then I doubt you communicated. I don’t get why you couldn’t have just had a conversation?

buckeejit · 10/12/2023 20:11

Sorry OP but think you should pop round if you haven't kept them up to date with things & gifted anything. Apologise & say you should have warned them you were planning a noisy longer day & asked if they were ok with it, give wine & flowers/chocs & assure them you're finally done.

Nobody else is that interested in your renovations, although I know they can be all consuming when you're going through them. Hope you're able to enjoy the finished product

Stellastag · 11/12/2023 02:46

Are you detached semi detached or terraced? If work was going to be that late, I know just for one day but on a weekend, maybe it would’ve been polite to say something to the neighbours. That’s a lot of noise and disruption for a very very long time!!

Ukrainebaby23 · 11/12/2023 05:06

Omg I never knew there were rules about what time you could do reno. I thought it was just about reasonable behaviours.

I'm off to check the legal status here in case I'm breaking some law.
We often work Sat and Sunday all day as that's the only time we have to get the jobs done.

DangerousAlchemy · 11/12/2023 07:53

I've noticed in my area some builders are working all weekend these days! We have restrictions too I'm sure. Seen builders mixing up cement on bank holidays at 8 am 🙄 Really loud radios on etc. Would piss me off especially on a weekend tbh. On my road my neighbours don't all have drives so their builders often park across my drive & block me in or out. The ones who apologise & immediately move their van etc I can live with - its the rude ones who make me feel I'm somehow complaining about nothing that annoy me. Same with friendly neighbours who take the time to talk to me about work on their property & when it will start & finish etc. I'd be annoyed too if builders were banging away til 8pm on a Saturday - but I wouldn't report you.

I didn’t sag that. The renovations have lasted 18 months during the week. It was one Saturday they lasted from 8am-8pm as a one off as it was the last day and we wanted it done before Christmas. Any housing/plumbing/plastering etc is now over/complete.

Oh, yay.

She's now only got the sanding, decorating, flooring, shelving, storage, furniture moving and picture hanging to go.

Sage71 · 11/12/2023 21:27

Did you advise them that work was going on late to finish up, if not then YABU especially as the permitted hours are Mon - Fri 8am - 6pm Sat 8am - 1pm. If you didn’t knock you have no idea what plans they had so, they may have had friends over or anything!

Lalalalala555 · 12/12/2023 15:26

Imagine life from their perspective.
They've had reno work going on next door, for 18 months, including at the weekends.

The reno work for you is beneficial and you also have control over it.

To them, their home is being noise polluted every day?

Have you communicated to them your schedule / estimated end date?
Did you act conscientiously and notify them any times noise would be that would be weekend /late?
Have you been appreciative and kind to them for living with the noise?

^ If no to the above. YTA.
If you have been considerate. Then more wibbley.
I think any person would have their sanity wear thin if they have loud noise for 18 months.

You wanted it done before Christmas, you should have planned better.
Your neighbour probably wanted a peaceful weekend before the chaos of Christmas, but you put a stop to that! Very selfish. At the very least you should have let them know and apologised in advance.

Mumof3girks · 13/12/2023 08:37

I have neighbours that since they moved in have worked on their house. They work from 8am till 3pm then 7pm till midnight. Everyday. I can hear them and I'm not in a house attached to them. Council do nothing even tho it's a council house. They had the pavement dug up by the water board as their pressure wasn't enough until they got their own spur of the main line. The rest of us further down on the same line had no issues with the pressure. YANBU.

sargeantskone · 14/12/2023 06:33

What council times??

Oh wow!! People would never get anything done if they thought about everyone else and what they might be doing!
my neighbour works nights but I don’t stop hoovering or playing my music because they are sleeping, I just keep it down a little when I know he’s on shift.
if the neighbours were that bothered about the noise they should have come round and had a chat.
sone people just like a moan and think it’s all about them!!

Bet your neighbours love you...

Ukrainebaby23 · 14/12/2023 10:16

Lol, actually they do, because my Dh fitted them an outside light for free so they can see their back door.

Having read the rules, I don't think we've ever broken any, except perhaps a Saturday afternoon wardrobe dismantling session which was a bit banging.

AgentJohnson · 14/12/2023 10:33

I suspect the one off Saturday 12 hour marathons was the final straw after 18 months of weekday nuisance.
