Neighbour reported us to the council

We moved in 18(ish) months ago (semidetached) and we’ve been renovating the whole house. The last weekend we had builders in who worked until 8pm.

They worked that late as this was the last day of completing all the big jobs in the house. Apart from that one day we’ve only had work done between 8am and 4pm. Just one night we didn’t and she reported us. Aibu?

That’s the very least OP should do to make amends. Sadly lots of people (if a local FB group are anything to go by) are similar to OP and very entitled in this way. Surprised there’s not more complaints to councils re this.

Exactly this. ^ There are a few people on this thread like the ones in your local FB group. You only have to read a few posts by certain posters on here to see that........ Wink

18 MONTHS??? Your poor neighbours.

LadyBird1973 · 07/12/2023 22:43

18 months of work and noise - be grateful you aren't buried under your renovation work! They've had all the disruption and no benefit to themselves - it's far easier for you to live with because you are getting a nice home out of it.
Yabu!

Cosywintertime · 07/12/2023 22:43

Goodness these responses are so over the top.

op, what kind of work were you having done over 18 months and what was the noise levels

18 months is significant. , can you maybe explain what was being done?

Savedpassword · 07/12/2023 22:43

12 hours solid noise on a Saturday? You’re joking right?

But at the end of the day they’re only like this because they’re not challenged. My NDN were clueless when they first moved in especially as they’d never hired builders before and certainly about the extension. Lots of people are similar to them if their first home renovation job. If they have money to throw at an extension and everyone else is doing it then they won’t be bothered as long as they get what they want. As they’ve got older they’ve gained more life experience and now eg they could extend into their big attic space but said after their extension nightmare and the expense of doing it they wouldn’t do it now.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/12/2023 22:45

After 18 months, 8pm would have been the final straw. Not surprised she was pissed off.

Wherearemykeysagain · 07/12/2023 22:45

our next door neighbours are gutting their house. It’s a living nightmare and sounds like they are demolishing our house! I have huge sympathy with anyone living through it. If they are being unreasonable it’s probably because they are losing their marbles!

Ilovegoldies · 07/12/2023 22:46

I'm an Environmental Health Officer. It's 8 -6 Monday to Friday, 8 - 1 on a Saturday and diddly squat on Sunday in my area. I think you'll find most LAs are similar. So pipe down!

SutWytTi · 07/12/2023 22:47

Go round and apologise. Take them a big tin of chocolates.

I’m embarrassed for you. You’ve got all excited at a pile on. Things like plumbing and plastering make little to no noise, at least calm your self and as what rhe work was.

And a nice gin and order them a luxury Christmas hamper. Honestly that’s the least you can do. And a sincere apology.

Doggymummar · 07/12/2023 22:48

You should have communicated better with ALL your neighbours so they knew. Invite the street over for apologies and Christmas nibbles and I'm sure all will be forgiven.

working 6-odd hours outside the legal timeframe for a weekend without a heads up after 18 months of reno disturbances, you’re lucky I’m not your next door neighbour cos I’d have steamrollered your house 😂

OllieCollieWoo · 07/12/2023 23:00

You should have told them it was a one off. Communicate with them. Otherwise they are probably thinking this is the norm for future weekends.
18 months.... bloody hell, surely you can understand they are in dread of noise from your house?

carly2803 · 07/12/2023 23:03

18 months?!
id have lost it 12 months ago! absolutely right to report you, especially 12 hours on a weekend - hell no!

dontgobaconmyheart · 07/12/2023 23:05

Well they've reported you for something that did in fact happen, and how are they supposed to know that it's a one off. I'd be taking them over a hamper if anything, and apologising for all the renovation noise, it must be a nightmare. Let them know when you are having works done and the expected timelines, it's the bare minimum of reasonable.

The council aren't going to do anything but they must have felt at their wits end to have reported it and I'd focus on that and attempt to empathise much more than I would be taking personal offense.

I am embarrassed for you as you missed @ILoveGoldies point entirely. You must be cringing or you should be. On this thread we are not talking about quiet jobs like plastering.

olympicsrock · 07/12/2023 23:10

You have taken the piss here ….

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 07/12/2023 23:13

Do you blame them?

I don't.

LittleMissUnreasonable · 07/12/2023 23:15

I'm shocked that you're lacking in this much self awareness OP. Go around with a hamper and a massive apology. just because you want the job doing before Christmas doesn't mean your neighbours should be subject to this much disturbance. You sound utterly self absorbed and selfish.

Borth · 07/12/2023 23:19

EchothatICreated · 07/12/2023 22:16

I didn’t sag that. The renovations have lasted 18 months during the week. It was one Saturday they lasted from 8am-8pm as a one off as it was the last day and we wanted it done before Christmas. Any housing/plumbing/plastering etc is now over/complete.

What renovations take 18 months? I had an entire house built in 6.

uneffingbelievable · 07/12/2023 23:20

OP - you have no clue what hell you ahve inflicted on your neighbours.

Mine moved in 2 years ago - terraced house. Accepted initial 6 months of banging, painting carpets etc. They knew no boundaries weekends started at 0800 went on till 2200. Same on Sunday it was and still is relentless.

Most infuritating is their little habit of coming home on a Sunday midafternoon and starting up till 2200 even now.

My plaster is cracked they have drilled into the party wall so much with no discussion and then have the effing cheek to post on face book that they hear the neighbours alot!!

Never had a problem with neighbours either side before - now I know what they cook for tea, that he is emotionally stunted, she has feelings he refuses to recognise, he has to go home to his mothers if she orders him out, she sings ( good voice) loudly, they play music loudly and every day they drill or saw something in the evening.

My home was my sanctuary during some tough times - it is now no longer and I am looking to move - 18 months is hell on earth to those who can hear but do nothing.

ings which he needs to recognise

HangingOver · 07/12/2023 23:21

I'd have put a turd through your letterbox by now.
