Neighbour reported us to the council

We moved in 18(ish) months ago (semidetached) and we’ve been renovating the whole house. The last weekend we had builders in who worked until 8pm.

They worked that late as this was the last day of completing all the big jobs in the house. Apart from that one day we’ve only had work done between 8am and 4pm. Just one night we didn’t and she reported us. Aibu?

I’m embarrassed for you. You’ve got all excited at a pile on. Things like plumbing and plastering make little to no noise, at least calm your self and as what rhe work was.

It’s more embarrassing to sympathise with such inconsiderate arseholes, have a word with yourself

theduchessofspork · 07/12/2023 23:22

If you didn’t warn her, YABU

8am on a Saturday is also a rather early start time

Chickpea17 · 07/12/2023 23:22

18 months 😟 I would of kicked off along time ago if I was your neighbour

Why and what about if it was all within guidelines?

How do you know that. Complaints are anonymous. Even if she did there's nothing you can do.

Just accept it.

Yes, this. How do you know she reported you, @EchothatICreated? Complaints are supposed to be anonymous. Perhaps you are jumping to conclusions and it wasn't your neighbour who reported you.

LuluBlakey1 · 07/12/2023 23:24

18 months of renovations is enough to make any neighbour lose their mind. Totally unreasonable. Builders make noise and mess- that's what they do and it is horrible living next door to a big renovation.
Have you done anything for the neighbours at all? Something to compensate them for the stress? Like offered to send them to Barbados for a holiday? :)

margotrose · 07/12/2023 23:25

Noisy work should be finished by 1pm on Saturdays.

You were selfish and impatient and this is the result.

Viviennemary · 07/12/2023 23:28

Builders should not have been doing work at 8 o'clock at night. End off. Eighteen months of rennovations. Neighbours from hell I would say.

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 07/12/2023 23:30

I have learned through my several decades of life that there are a lot of intolerant people in this world!

You could have had builders working until midnight 7 days a week and I wouldn't complain - not even to you, let alone the council.

But as long as she gets what she wants surely it is worth it in her eyes. The fact that your neighbours are unlikely to forgive you seems to have escaped you.

Well you must be very strange!

CrushingOnRubies · 07/12/2023 23:35

She probably complained to the council as she'd wanted a nice lie in after a long week but couldn't due to the bashing around started at 8am. Then for various reasons (maybe she wanted to start prepping of their Christmas) she had to stay in all day and the noise gave her headache. She was probably feeling a bit better and wanted to settle down to watch Strictly Come Dancing or whatever but couldn't enjoy it because the nose was still carrying on.

A heads up would have been the considerate thing to do

cool4cats2020 · 07/12/2023 23:36

I can understand why their patience is running thin after 18 months of disruption. Have you considered it from their perspective?

Some people bought the cottage adjoining mine and their renovations went on for 5 years. They weren't in a hurry and were never inconvenienced by it because it was a holiday home to them, so they just turned up on occasional weekends to inspect the (slow) progress, without ever experiencing the noise, dust, damage and inconsiderate builder's behaviour for themselves. Once they finally finished what they had described as their perfect forever home, they promptly put it on the market. Thankfully it's really quiet now because it's sat empty for the last 12 months because no one wants to pay their over inflated asking price.

… and so spoke the doormat.

LadyBird1973 · 07/12/2023 23:41

People are allowed to be intolerant of their home life being constantly disturbed by a selfish dickhead neighbour.

Isittimeformynapyet · 07/12/2023 23:44

"I have learned through my several decades of life ......"

Such pomposity @ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming!

I thought you would follow that up with some words of wisdom, but no! You just told us all that you're proud of being mistreated!

2jacqi · 07/12/2023 21:48

@EchothatICreated genuinely dont think you have anything to worry about! 8pm is a reasonable time to knock off when you are doing reno work! some people just like a moan! if it is you and friends doing reno then i think that is fine, dont know any businesses who would allow their employees to work till 8 pm on a weekend night! overtime would be too high!

Edited

8pm isn’t a reasonable time. The councils have clear times for noisy work, usually 8am - 6pm on a weekday and 8am to 1pm on a Saturday. You can be fined if you go over that time and the fines can be large. Anyone who has lived next door to a renovation or building project will be desperate for the builders to knock off on time. It’s bloody awful having to listen to it all day and then they don’t finish on time.

Hankunamatata · 07/12/2023 23:47

I'd be having a fit if I was woken before 10am on Saturday as its my only lie in day.
This has to be a weird reverse. No one can be this obtuse

Trez1510 · 07/12/2023 23:53

I'm hoping the NDN has a massive lottery win, moves out to a lovely detached property, and lets builders renovate the hell out of the property for at least 18m with zero regard to regulations every single Saturday.

I'd consider paying the resultant fines as money well spent.

wronginalltherightways · 07/12/2023 23:56

YABU

and if you genuinely thought you weren't, and that this would wrap up most of the obnoxious work you've been doing for such an extended period of time, you'd have given them a head's up and asked them if it was ok FIRST. And accepted a 'no' and rescheduled during normal work times.

FirstTimeTTC989 · 08/12/2023 00:21

Oh fuck off. 8am to 8pm on a SATURDAY. Insane. So rude.

MissTrip82 · 08/12/2023 00:24

What are the rules in your area?

What did they say when you popped round to let them know it would be one day of extended time (within the rules, presumably.....)?

PickledPurplePickle · 08/12/2023 00:32

YABU your poor neighbours

Bluerose2 · 08/12/2023 00:41

They are probably fed up of the noise they’ve been hearing for the last 18 months, especially if they work from home. Not saying there’s anything wrong with the work being done in the week but it is usually very noisy. I can see it being really disruptive come the weekend, especially until 8pm. They may have had guests over at that time. It’s extremely unreasonable when the rule is 1pm.
