To keep my nose ring in

Jixg · 07/12/2023 21:31

I have a nose ring. I’ve had it since I was 16 and it’s very much a part of me and my identity. I started a new office job and they’ve asked me to not wear it to work. Aibu to be upset by this!?

OP posts:
Newsenmum · 07/12/2023 21:31

hmm not sure, something you can speak to HR about?

TeenLifeMum · 07/12/2023 21:32

What kind of job is it? Seems odd to me but some companies have uniform/dress codes.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 07/12/2023 21:33

Is your role client facing?
Does the company have a dress code?
Are you in a probationary period?

Bluntly, do you want the job or not?

GoldenTea · 07/12/2023 21:34

Bit old fashioned. I'm a solicitor and have always worn a stud or ring (big commercial firm).

howdoesyourgardengrowinmay · 07/12/2023 21:35

If your role is client facing, or dealing face to face with anyone, do you want them to think you have a bogey hanging out of your nostril?

Pennyplant19 · 07/12/2023 21:37

Seems old fashioned to me, but, their firm, their rules.....

vodkaredbullgirl · 07/12/2023 21:37

Is it on the side of your nose or the septum?

DisforDarkChocolate · 07/12/2023 21:38

Do you have a dress code?

Even if you're customer facing I'd barely notice a nose ring nowadays.

QueenoftheNimbleFlyingCat · 07/12/2023 21:38

Why have they asked you? Absolutely ridiculous unless for health and safety reasons.

Behindyouiam · 07/12/2023 21:38

Very old fashioned! I presume you wore it at the interview? They should've mentioned it when offering the job!

But surely they should've mentioned it before OP started? Then she could've decided to take the job or not.

Meowandthen · 07/12/2023 21:39

Presumably you had it when interviewed, so odd to ask you to remove it now.

Surely no one really cares these days?

Cosyblankets · 07/12/2023 21:39

If it's part of their dress code and it's been made clear then you should remove it.
If not, that's different

SusanKennedyshouldLTB · 07/12/2023 21:39

it’s very much a part of me and my identity
really? It is a piece of jewellery. Is this not a bit dramatic?

What kind of weirdo would think that? Odd comment.

DickJagger · 07/12/2023 21:41

How ridiculous. So what if it is "client facing"? It's almost 2024, not 1824. Nose piercings are incredibly popular. I don't even know anybody who would notice nor recoil in horror.

Maybe she's a bull.

Oh that is hilarious. Even my 80 year old mother wouldn't make lame arse judgy comments like that.

For many people, me included, piercings and/or tattoos are a big part of our identity. The OP is referring to a simple nose ring. Not tattooed eyeballs and a split tongue. Catch yourself on.

Are there people who get confused between jewellery and snot??? What an odd thing to say.

I work client facing and have never been asked to take my nose ring out. I wear a very fine hoop in black/ silver/gold. Its never been a problem. I'd speak to HR and ask for a copy of the dress policy if there is one. Tbh that would put me off a company.

Yep, I'm an odd weirdo, and I've heard loads of comments like that.

Moveoverdarlin · 07/12/2023 21:48

I can’t believe a nose ring is part of your identity. I can’t imagine saying that about those tiny holes in my ears that I put bits of metal in. They’re just earrings. Not part of my identity.

I worked somewhere where you weren’t allowed to wear hoops in your ears bigger than a 5p coin. I wanted the job so I took out my earrings (which were about the size of a 10p). My identity remained exactly the same!!! Same name, same face, same personality, same views. If you take out the nose ring, literally nothing will change. If you want to set off on the wrong foot, leave it in and see what happens.

Mawface · 07/12/2023 21:49

Buy a clear stud. They're on amazon. I wear them to work and nobody's ever noticed.

RuffledKestrel · 07/12/2023 21:49

I assume you had it in during the interview with them? If so, they should have mentioned it would be a problem then in my opinion.
Unless it's a health and safety concern, I'd ignore untill they ask in writing and then speak to HR/union.

Did you know the rules before you started the job?

OldChinaJug · 07/12/2023 21:51

I'm a primary school teacher and I have a nose ring. In 20 years of teaching, I've only been asked to remove it once due to the ethos of the school. I did because I'd rather have a job! Took it out when I arrived and put it back in when I left.

But I do understand. I've had mine in for 30 years and only removed it when I had a C section in that time otherwise. My face looks weird without it!

But I wouldn't make a big deal about it for work, no.
