To go back to A&E

3 year old since yesterday afternoon has had sporadic stomach pain, will scream and cry, grabbing at her stomach saying it hurts. After bedtime this ramped up to every 11minutes. DH took her to A&E last night, they said no other worrying signs, (they didn’t run any actual tests- but felt her belly and did her observations), and they think that essentially she’s trying to pass a stool. Told to give ibuprofen- which she’s had 1 dose so far.
I have had her in bed with me, we have been up every 6-12 mins without fail since 1am, she’s thrown up once through the pain- still no other symptoms, no temp no sweats etc.
Am I right to go back and demand further tests, my child is exhausted, this cannot be normal.

Ibuprofen for stomach pain? No, that can make it worse!
Paracetamol would be better, and I would take them back. You know them best and can tell when something isn't right.

DeathMetalMum · 07/12/2023 07:31

Yes go back. I'd go now. Don't wait until the GP's are open or you will be waiting with all the people who think they need to go to A&E because they can't see their GP today.

My dc couldn’t pass a stool - turned out to be appendicitis. Pain started belly button area. I’d take back. Good luck.

SapphosRock · 07/12/2023 08:09

Go back. Could be appendicitis and you don't want to mess with a burst appendix.

TokyoSushi · 07/12/2023 08:11

Yes agree, go back

PGmicstand · 07/12/2023 08:14

When DC was a bit younger and had mesenteric adonitis it presented like the onset of appendicitis. Thankfully we only had a few days of it being particularly bad.
Hope you get some answers.

iLovee · 07/12/2023 08:23

Hope she's okay! ♥️

purser25 · 07/12/2023 08:39

Ibroprofen can make you constipated

kittensinthekitchen · 07/12/2023 08:45

Call 111. Thats what it's for.
Tell them the change in symptoms and they'll advise

Vinrouge4 · 07/12/2023 08:47

Surely ibuprofen will just make her more constipated?

Absolutely go back. My daughter who was 12 at the time started screaming with back pain. 999 wouldn’t come out. They told me to ring my GP. My GP wouldn’t see her because they only had 3 hours to go….so I didn’t know what on earth to do

i rang 111 and they told me to come in. Took her in and they said you need to get to A and E now. Clinically she’s really unwell and we’re worried it’s sepsis….

so yes. Always trust your gut. Always!!!

Kissmystarfish · 07/12/2023 09:00

I mean she did have bad obs. Her heart rate was near 189. Her bp was sky high and her temp was really high.

Before or after presenting at A&E?
What's the timeline?

It's after 9am now, try the GP?

Goatymum · 07/12/2023 09:06

Def go back / hopefully you’re there now (early hours is a good time to go - before people wake up but after the previous night has cleared!).
can’t believe they suggested ibuprofen- notoriously bad for the gut.
my dd had bad constipation as a toddler/young child and it was obvious what it was, but also was never in constant pain, didn’t stop sleep etc. Was on movicol for a few years.

MrsMorrisey · 07/12/2023 09:44

When was the last time she did a poo?
I'd be taking her back.
My son had this and it was intersusseption. Definitely get her reassessed.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 07/12/2023 10:23

Have been seen in paediatrics- definitely the right time to come, very quick- the anti sickness meds they administered knocked her out finally. They suspect stomach flu- but in true sod law I’m having to wake her up every 5mins to give fluids.

@OnlyFoolsnMothers How’s she doing tonight? I hope things are better 🤞🏼

Behindyouiam · 07/12/2023 23:12

Just caught up with this! How is she now OP, hopefully you're all fast asleep and won't answer until morning.

IndiganDop · 07/12/2023 23:16

Ask them if they are certain it isn't intussusception. My DD had this at 6. It's rare in children older than babies so doesn't always get considered. 7 doctors told me stomach flu/gastritis but other than the waves of agonising pain she didn't have diarrhea like I would have expected.

She did start vomiting up everything, and then vomiting bile, and then brown fluid eventually - because of the intestines being blocked.

Oh my goodness! Was she ok in the end?

Oh my goodness! Was she ok in the end?

Yes, but she had to have a bowel resection - 30cm removed as it had gone necrotic due to the delayed diagnosis.

OP it's visible on scan. If she has had a clear scan it won't be that.

Behindyouiam · 07/12/2023 23:22

@IndiganDop poor DD

My daughter too. Did your son need a resection? Or was it caught in time?

Probiotics
Prune juice
Orange juice
Constipation can indeed cause pain like this in a child
