Embarrassed myself whilst giving a presentation

Today I had a presentation, just a spoken presentation with no PowerPoint slides. It was in a small group of 5, with 3 examiners sitting at desks assessing us. When I entered the room, I was surprised to see that there were chairs at the front lined for each of us to sit on. I didn't think much of it, as with there being no slides and no big audience who needed to see us from the back I presumed we were supposed to sit down and speak. I went first, and remained sitting. The person after me also stayed seated, but after them the next person stood up and so everyone else remaining also stood once it was their turn, and then sat back down once their turn was over.

I feel really embarrassed and awkward about it. It just didn't cross my mind to stand up. I've done presentations before but in front of the whole class and with slides to go and point at or gesture towards. There's never been any chairs, even in group presentations you all stand throughout. But with a row of chairs at the front I just presumed were were supposed to stay seated. I'm now worried I'm going to get marked down for it, and feel guilty that I influenced the next person to stay seated too. I honestly just didn't realise or think. I spoke to some of my friends who were in different groups and every single person stood up when speaking, and in some groups the whole group stood for the duration.

Why does it matter? Some of us would have no choice but to sit, would we be considered less professional due to disability? And if it is not unprofessional for a disabled person to sit, then why would it be for able bodied?

Thank you all, I think the nerves and anxiety about the presentation have resulted in me overthinking things. You've made me feel a lot better about it

I thought you'd farted loudly through nerves, fallen over or got into an argument with a heckler! I think sitting is fine and nothing to get stressed about.

YoBeaches · 06/12/2023 21:29

Yea you are overthinking. If everyone else has chosen to stay seated then this wouldn't even cross your mind. It's simply because you each approached it differently and you are assuming yours was wrong.

Some people are better speakers when sitting, or when standing. Some people always tremble when they stand to speak.

It really doesn't matter how you have your presentation. It's the content and delivery that's important.

Please don't worry about this. I'm a lecturer. I also have an invisible disability so I have to sit these days. I did a presentation today which was not with any slides so I just sat and it was a large room with about forty people. It was fine.

I've never minded if students sit or stand. It's what they say and how that matters.

I was in a major meeting today with my boss. She walked into the room, faced the audience and said ‘I’m sitting down for this presentation so do move your seats so you can see me’, cracked on and nailed it. I thought, that’s how you do it!!! Don’t worry OP. It’s easy to judge yourself in ways that no one else would.

🤔 that doesn’t sound embarrassing at all

I thought you might have broken wind whilst speaking or something

I once DID fart in an interview!! It was one of the most embarrassing moments ever!

To be fair to me (and by way of explanation 🤣) I had literally 24 hours earlier been discharged from hospital after an emergency laparoscopy.

The interview was really important to me so I struggled through it...still full of the CO2 that had been inserted into my abdomen 😬

During the hour long interview, I was becoming more and more uncomfortable, and after a while, was in real pain from holding in the gas. I asked for a comfort break and as I stood up (as clenched as possible!) I tripped on the chair leg and all my clenching became unclenched...releasing rather long, ominous, squeaky fart!!

With as much dignity as I could muster, I apologised profusely, scuttled out...and didn't return to finish the interview 😳

OP...I think you'll be fine 😁

I thought you were going to say your skirt was tucked into your knickers the whole time.

Canisaysomething · 06/12/2023 22:48

This is such a non issue, it’s just adrenaline and anxiety.

I actually did fart loudly during other people's presentations today. I have a stoma so can't control it. I had to style it out and pretend my stomach was rumbling but I don't think anyone was fooled.

AnyFucker · 07/12/2023 09:08

@SpringIntoChaos this is one of my fears 😊

Maddy70 · 07/12/2023 09:09

Ots so you have the option pfd sitting g or standing. Don't give it any more thought
