To think boys in school uniform shorts at -3c is neglect.

Just returned from rural primary school in Lakes. Young lads in school uniform shorts - it's minus 3 here. I class this as neglect. Discuss.

Are people struggling to afford winter school uniform? Aldi sells school trousers for less than a coffee (1.75 gbp?) Or worse are they indifferent?

There is a parent at DS school I call 'shorts dad'... rain, shine, snow doesn't matter he is in shorts and a t-shirt. The man clearly does not feel cold. Same with the post man.

I'm close to you country wise and my toddler has been almost nude most the last 2 weeks despite the low temps. She just will NOT put clothes on without the wrath of hell unleashing. She an angel sat in just her nappy but low betide those who try to put trousers on (she has physically hurt people).

LadyR77 · 06/12/2023 10:14

DS10 refuses to wear anything other than shorts to school year-round, even if there's snow on the ground! He has a pair of long trousers but they've never been worn. Dreading him starting secondary and having to force him into long trousers every day! He's far from neglected - just strong-willed and hot blooded!!

Georgyporky · 06/12/2023 10:16

They're in training to be postmen - never seen one in long trousers where I live.

Myfabby · 06/12/2023 10:16

ManateeFair · 06/12/2023 10:11

What's that got to do with what other people's kids want to wear, though? You do understand that not everyone is the same, right?

plus the concept of 'owning' children is bizarre to me.

Caledoniadreaming · 06/12/2023 10:17

My brother went all the way through primary and most of secondary only wearing shorts all year round - we lived in very rural Scotland. No amount of bribery (from my parents) or threats of suspension (from secondary school headmaster) would convince him to wear trousers. No sensory issues, just preferred to wear shorts!

The dr mentioned that "Young girls were getting chilblains". She seemed convincing.

Chilblains aren't caused by having bare legs. They're caused by going from a very cold to a very warm environment very rapidly. That's why they were much more common in the days when people had fires instead of central heating - people would come in from freezing weather and plonk themselves right by a single very intense heat source, rather than a more ambient temperature. If young girls are getting chilblains it's a lot more likely they're getting them because they're coming indoors and sitting right by their middle-class parents' log-burners.

Potentialscroogeincognito · 06/12/2023 10:18

My son wears shorts and long wool socks for school. Refuses to wear trousers. Not a sensory thing just prefers shorts. Not neglect.

Edinvillian · 06/12/2023 10:18

I'm in the north east of Scotland, it's minus 5 today and schools are starting late due to the extreme frost and ice. There were still lots of boys wearing shorts when I dropped my son off this morning. They refuse to wear trousers.
Every day I shake my head at them 😂
Thankfully my boy likes to be cosy.

or just a sanctimonious so and so. Wish I hadn't along with so many others responded to her 'discuss' command 🙄

WinterNamechange · 06/12/2023 10:20

My year 2 son refuses to wear trousers so far this year 🤷🏻‍♀️ Children don’t seem to feel the cold as adults do. Hardly neglect, this is one of the most OTT opinions I’ve seen on mumsnet lately!

PosyPrettyToes · 06/12/2023 10:22

My DS will NOT wear school trousers. He has quite profound SEND. luckily his school are very flexible on uniform so I can send him in joggers instead but he'd likely prefer to wear shorts if I'd let him!

JasonMurrayMint · 06/12/2023 10:29

All of mine wore shorts all year round, schools are massively overheated , they immediately took off jumpers when they arrived, v v occasionally I would get them to wear salopettes over their shorts till they got to school, but that was really only in snow. They really didn’t want to wear trousers.

Winstonsminder · 06/12/2023 10:30

My 9 year old wear shorts to school everyday in the North West. He never wears a hat, rarely wears a coat and occasionally puts gloves on. He’s fit and healthy and definitely not neglected!

I wasn't sure at first if that was EFL, but the OP talks of being at school in NW England in the 80s and 90s, so clearly not. Agreed, it's very strange phrasing.

The tone of the op is extremely irritating.

Discuss? This is not an RE exam. No, we don't need to dance for you op.

And who says gbp? Use the £ sign, thank you.

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 06/12/2023 10:33

I had a weird child who wouldn’t wear long trousers. Compromise was merino socks and long sleeve thermal top. Didn’t seem to feel the cold . He had ski trousers in his bag for snow. They largely went unworn.

KnickerlessParsons · 06/12/2023 10:34

Is it a school for budding postmen by any chance?

maddiemookins16mum · 06/12/2023 10:34

Discuss? Hate that expression on posts. However, shorts and socks? no different from a skirt and socks really.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/12/2023 10:34

One of our son’s friends would wear nothing but shorts out of choice, whatever the weather. Simply wouldn’t tolerate trousers. So I wouldn’t rush to judge.

TinPanSally · 06/12/2023 10:34

I've spent years trying to get my boy into trousers. He wore them through his secondary years only because the school uniform ones didn't go down to his waist size and kept falling down. Once home, they were straight off.

He's now in the sixth form, and is back in shorts.

Velvian · 06/12/2023 10:36

My DH has recently and inexplicably become a 'shorts man'. I did not sign up for it.

LlynTegid · 06/12/2023 10:36

Not an issue to me as long as the school is accepting of long trousers being worn if child and/or parents want this.

blabla2023 · 06/12/2023 10:37

My oldest hates trousers. He wears short with cotton cycling shorts underneath, and long socks with waterproof shoes. probably warmer than the girls with thin tights and ballet flat shoes.
Why is it expected and ok for girls to freeze and boys need to be extra warm?
