To think boys in school uniform shorts at -3c is neglect.

Just returned from rural primary school in Lakes. Young lads in school uniform shorts - it's minus 3 here. I class this as neglect. Discuss.

Are people struggling to afford winter school uniform? Aldi sells school trousers for less than a coffee (1.75 gbp?) Or worse are they indifferent?

I also went to school in 80s/90s. All the boys had long trousers unless it was very hot. It's def colder in North West!

When I grew up in the North West of England (in the olden days) boys wore shorts and girls wore skirts, both with socks, all through primary school. We walked to school as well.

Yes, I am aware this is turning into the Four Yorkshiremen sketch…

Foxesandsquirrels · 06/12/2023 09:47

This is really really common. Kids won't feel the cold like you do. I never feel the cold on my legs either, especially calves. As long as feet and thighs are warm I'm completely fine.

Mummyme87 · 06/12/2023 09:48

Also, kids don’t get ill from having bare legs nor chillblains. Jesus Christ.

EeesandWhizz · 06/12/2023 09:48

Well my son is neglected as is my postman and my neighbour.

You must be quite young to find the weather at the moment the coldest you've ever known.

SomethingAboutNothing · 06/12/2023 09:48

My 11 year old has set himself a personal challenge to wear shorts for school all the way to the end of the year, come snow (last week) or extreme frost (today -3). This is despite him having a full drawer of brand new school trousers for him to wear. I keep telling him he should wear the trousers but he is quite insistent. Can't force him, part of growing up is making autonomous decisions 🤷‍♀️

Hotchocolate2023 · 06/12/2023 09:49

Some kids won't wear trousers. Let's face it, a thin piece of material won't make a huge difference anyway

boozeclues · 06/12/2023 09:49

There was a boy who (in my also very rural, tiny village with a micro climate that is usually 2 degrees lower then everywhere else locally) who would only ever wear shorts and the school polo!!

I used to drive past him in all my layers and heated seats and shiver - he was absolutely fine, although probably miffed as the local secondary school doesn’t allow shorts and has a scratch wool jumper plus blazer…

bridgetreilly · 06/12/2023 09:46

It’s not neglect. I think you need to mind your own business on this.

very judgy, 'it can't possibly be cost- it's less than a coffee'🙄

My son's school uniform through to year 6 was shorts, with long socks.

MrsKwazi · 06/12/2023 09:49

Discuss 🙄

You are being ridiculous. HTH.

User2856948 · 06/12/2023 09:50

Actually I didn't ever wear tights at primary school so must have worn my long white socks and skirt for school in 1963 which was that very harsh winter, I was 5

4FoxxSake · 06/12/2023 09:50

My kids wear shorts all year round. I pick my battles and their choice of clothing isn't I've of them.

pizzaHeart · 06/12/2023 09:50

It might be sensory but if it’s all of them - it’s their uniform and they obviously pretend to be posh and like royals.
I wouldn’t believe that they were too hot at school by the way especially if it’s a public school as most of them in old buildings with big windows.

sleepismyhobby · 06/12/2023 09:50

My dad was a wartime child and
He said he never got long trousers till he was 12 it was the done thing then. I know loads of kids that live in shorts all year round. My youngest ds was like this but he now likes leggings in cold months

DragonMumE · 06/12/2023 09:39

The dr mentioned that "Young girls were getting chilblains". She seemed convincing.

I mean if you believe this anecdotal bit of info, surely you can also believe that a random boy can be quite the opposite and not feel the cold?

BMW6 · 06/12/2023 09:51

Well she is a shit doctor, and if you bothered to take 10 seconds to Google you would have learned real facts about chilblains for yourself.

Swearwolf · 06/12/2023 09:51

My 11 year old wears shorts all year. He does have two pairs of trousers, but he only wears them if it's well below freezing. He's wearing hiking socks today and says his knees and shins don't really feel the cold. It's not a sensory thing, he just prefers them and always has.

cheezncrackers · 06/12/2023 09:51

My boys both preferred shorts while at primary, although I did manage to get them into trousers when the mercury dipped to freezing. However, at least two boys in DS1's class refused to wear trousers ever! It's not that easy to force a DC into a garment they don't want to wear and tbh, you just have to pick your battles sometimes. It's worth pointing out how cold they'll be, but if they still refuse to wear trousers, then I let them crack on. They saw sense eventually.

User2856948 · 06/12/2023 09:52

OP is being ridiculous, neglect, discuss. what an odd OP

tenbob · 06/12/2023 09:52

Another one with DC in a school which has shorts for uniform all year round. No neglect, not a cost issue, no complaints about being cold from them…

I’ve just been for a run in shorts as well

Hardtime · 06/12/2023 09:53

One of the local boys' secondary schools apparently had a rule that shorts would be worn all year round by every boy under five feet tall. It was only changed in the 70's when a lad who was 4'10" was about to go into the sixth form.

WandaWonder · 06/12/2023 09:54

Why the outrage?

Do you know for a fact it is not their choice?

Rooroobear · 06/12/2023 09:56

My son wears them all year round as do lots of his friends. I have school trousers for him but he will just not wear them….hardly neglect. My ds is just more comfortable in shorts…..believe me, I have tired and tried to get him to wear trousers but he doesn’t want too

rachelvbwho · 06/12/2023 09:57

It's not a neglect thing, a ND thing or a "too poor" thing.. Some kids just don't like long trousers or tights.... And that's ok!

They are in a heated school, running about all day... They will be fine!

FuckHonestlyKnows · 06/12/2023 09:57

My son wears shorts as often as he can get away with.

lauribec · 06/12/2023 09:58

My son would happily wear shorts all year round if I let him, he just doesn’t seem to feel the cold like I do haha!
