16yo
Wants a job. Apparently.
Weirdly, a job hasn't fluttered into his bedroom and landed on his lap so he is most perplexed.

Picked up an application form for him from a local supermarket.
Encourage him to get a pen (no easy feat) and sit down to complete application.

20 seconds later... "What's my name?"

And that was just the beginning. I swear a 4yo would make a better employee. I fear for our future.

Note from MNHQ - we've edited the title as we had a few reports about one of the terms used there. We're sure there was no intention to offend but it was clearly upsetting a few people and we didn't want the issue to derail the thread

DH says that people who work with compressed air are given an orientation and safety session mentioning the extreme danger of doing something really stupid with an air line, something that teenage boys would think was funny, that can cause instant death.

Is this due what happened to the 17 year old boy in India? The CCTV video is on line and its horrific, anyone with half a brain cell could have predicted it. The fact his boss who was training him who did it who should be FULLY health and safety trained is worse and his lack of care/urgency afterwards. I hope when they catch him they throw the book at him.

For those of you who don't know and don't want too google the video:

A young 17 year old apprentice started at a job in a steel cutting factory. The factory uses compressed air to cut their thick steel construction girders to size (so obviously extreme pressure).

His boss was clearly teasing him, ruffling his hair, blowing dust on him etc... and the kid look awkward but is laughing it off. Just silly work prank stuff.

Then the young apprentice bent over to tie his shoe his BOSS quickly shoved the nozzle to his 'bum' and pulled the trigger. The poor boy survived 2 days in hospital and underwent emergency surgery but was unsavable due to the complete internal damage.

Boss went on the run and was never caught to be charged with manslaughter.

@housethatbuiltme

No, it was much earlier, 1960s or 1970s. A UK apprentice had to go up a ladder and two others thought it would be funny to point the air nozzle at his backside from some feet away. The pressure pulse even through overalls, trousers, and underwear killed him at once, on the spot. Sudden shock to the large intestine.

People do fool around with compressed air. Clearing metal swarf and blowing bits into their own or other people's eyes, using it to clean under their fingernails and giving themselves embolisms... DH's workplace had a very strict policy, one breach, instant dismissal.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 09/12/2023 13:08

Jesus Christ @housethatbuiltme. That sounds beyond awful, just horrific.

I saw a story yesterday about just that, a guy in India stuck a hose up a workmate's bum and killed him.

My little girl accidentally kicked me in the head while doing handstands. (It was quite a force because my jaw felt misaligned).I didn’t feel too good, but carried on regardless. I took painkillers and for the headache and said I needed to sit down before I do tea. I passed out, and didn’t wake up until 3-4 am the next day.

aApparently they couldn’t wake me. no matter what they tried. I was completely out. So in their logic, my eldest took my bank card and got McDonald’s for their tea.

That must have been scary for you 😯 hope it was all fine 🙏. Did you get any McDonalds? 😁

TeenagedTwit · 09/12/2023 20:31

Oh dear @dentydown 😳
I hope they got you some fries at least!

Your story reminds me of a babysitter we had when I was little. She sratched her head while doing a handstand and knocked herself out.

dentydown · 09/12/2023 20:31

No unfortunately not. I was more concerned that they didn’t call their dad for help (he doesn’t live with us) or check my breathing etc.

i wondered if they would get help if I became a bit slimy and smelly and hadn’t moved for a couple of weeks or would they just have a McDonald’s fest!

Is it possible to divorce one's children? I'd have been considering that! If your eldest knows your PIN you've broken the terms of the card, haven't you?

UK, two apprentices killed a third who was up a ladder, died at once. In the 1950s or 1960s. Part of compressed air training for a long time.

My ds aged 15 decided to eat a copper sulphate crystal during a chemistry lesson! Highly toxic and they had been warned....

Thus followed a trip to A&E!

He was fine but 🫣🙄

In the interests of honesty, I once got to the petrol station going to work, put my shoes, I never drive in shoes if I can avoid it, onto the forecourt ready to step into, realised I had forgotten my cards and drove home to get them. I then returned to the petrol station where a very bemused attendant was wondering why there was a pair of shoes in front of a pump! I will confess to be waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy beyond my teenage years.

A very well known sports commentator was an old boy of my grammar school and we contacted him as a part of the school's centenary, he wrote a great piece for us in which he confessed to having a burn on his outer thigh from when he had pinched a lump of sodium from the chemistry lab which has subsequently spontaneously combusted in his pocket. He'd never told his parents, just stuck a dressing over the burn and it took ages to heal leaving a permanent scar!

DNiece "hilariously" decided to cremate the dead (from natural causes) hamster on the BBQ. It was what he wanted apparently.

😂 Just terrible 😢 😂

I went out one evening and left my 15yr old.
Got back to a very disappointed face.

He'd ordered a pizza delivery and paid online. When it arrived, he wouldn't dare answer the door. Pizza went back to the shop.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 09/12/2023 22:54

When asked at the pharmacy if was still in full time eduction my DS17 looked at me and asked if he was……….I think my look gave him the answer 😂

HarrietPoole · 10/12/2023 09:45

My stepchildren moved to a new town with their mum and her new partner. I asked my step-son what their address was. He looked confused and asked, "can I google it?"
He was fourteen and they'd lived there for three years. 🙄

oh dear!

.... I am a Geordie, btw!

😍
I went to Newcastle for a weekend hens' night years ago. No-one could understand me. I'm Scottish 😂

KK05 · 10/12/2023 10:39

Fully functioning adult here with a good job.

Have driven to a town for years and always cut off and assumed I cut into a different motorway to continue on the journey turns out I was just leaving the motorway going round a round about and then back onto the same road.

Also put orange in my coffee and cereal one morning.

People like to point out I have brains but no common sense think it’s just the way my brains wired.

I think they’re also cute when they’re little though. When I’d tell my daughter she couldn’t paint the wall/have more sweets/run in the road, you know the usual 😆 She’d phone my mum to
complain and shout ‘She’s YOUR daughter, you tell her I can play with matches (or whatever)’

I guess in her head it made perfect sense 🤷‍♀️
