to ask if anyone EVER says 'How do you do?' in this day and age?

Just curious as I've spotted a few people elsewhere on the web recently - all from outside the UK as far as I can tell - confidently asserting that in Britain we say 'How do you do?' when we meet a new person and that the correct response is to parrot 'How do you do?' back at them.

I'm in my mid-fifties and the words 'How do you do?' have never once crossed my lips (unless followed by something like 'long division' or 'without chocolate', that is.) I find it bemusing that people still think this is a British 'thing', but am I missing something (perhaps due to my class background)? Do people actually still say 'How do you do?' in some circles?

YABU = I've said it
YANBU = I've never said it

Never...I would feel ridiculous saying it.

ConstantRain · 06/12/2023 16:07

I always think 'how do you do what?' so would never say it?

ChevyCamaro · 06/12/2023 16:12

I was taught to say it by my dad (working class, northern, immigrant background) and I stick to it when being introduced. I also always announce myself on the phone. I can't stand it when people call me and ask if I'm me...I'm like " well, who is calling??"
Happy to be old fashioned!

DH says "how ya doin?"

ChanelNo19EDT · 06/12/2023 17:33

@pickledandpuzzled I agree with @5128gap that ''how do you do'' adds nothing. I think what you're thinking of is that old tradition when introducing people to say ''geoffrey, this is pamela. Pamela won biggest courgette at the church fete. Pamela, Geoffrey has an allotment''.

hopeishere · 06/12/2023 17:39

I'm 53 and depending on the situation I will use it. My mum made us so it when we were little.

@Nandocushion "It's not actually a question and I would never answer it with "how do you do" - that would be ridiculous. "

Sadly-it's yet another one of those class indicators. The only "proper" response to "How do you do" is "How do you do"

Insane.

Fair enough - I wouldn't say it back because it sounds ridiculous! But it never comes up, because I am always the one saying it, and no one says it back to me in North America. When I lived in the US, I used to say it to people I was introduced to, and many of them got very flustered and answered "Errrr, I do fine!".

It’s a class marker:

upper and upwardly middle - how do you do
middle - pleased to meet you
working class - alright or other equiv regional phrase (now then … etc?)

above applies to England, I have no knowledge of what is used in Scotland / wales / Ireland, mind you.

I am guessing other very class conscious countries (France?) have similar divisions.

Rubbish

I’d say I’m working class and I’ve never said ‘alright’ in my life

Ladybughello · 06/12/2023 22:01

52% of voters have literally said this? 🤯🤯🤯

These responses are such an eye-opener! I was convinced the vast majority of responses would be along the lines of 'Nah, it's archaic'. It's reminded me how informal my world is in general (wfh for a very small/informal company and haven't ever really worked anywhere formal or moved in particularly formal circles, in 50+ years of living). 😄

I think we’re suffering from massive MN bias here!

In Happy Valley, the characters are always saying "Howdoo?" To each other in a mordant fashion. I totally loved it and wish I could carry it off but am a southern pansy so probably can't.

I've been saying this in my head as I've read through the thread (whilst thinking of JN 😂).

Londoner here, don't say how do you do. What is the correct response? If someone were to say it to me (no one ever has)?

The correct response is 'How do you do'. Note absence of question mark to indicate absence of enquiring tone.

Haydenn · 07/12/2023 11:20

I use it a lot. Because the correct response back is “how do you do” i don’t have to listen to an actual update that I don’t give a stuff about. It’s much better for strangers

PartyFearsTwo · 07/12/2023 11:21

I still say it in formal situations, for example at work, or perhaps at a wedding or something. That’s what I saw my parents doing, what they told me to do and something that I think I’ll always do.
I’m definitely, definitely not posh.

PartyFearsTwo · 07/12/2023 11:23

Oh and I don’t care what the reply is. But nobody has ever said ‘how do you do what?’.

Carouselfish · 07/12/2023 11:25

My gran used to. My partner says y'alright? And it drives my mum mad. I say, hi, how are YOU?
