Idiot driver and red light pedestrian crossing

Was at a pedestrian crossing this afternoon with lights. Pressed the button, the lights went red for vehicles and green for me. Was about to cross when a car speeded up through the lights.
i had my 8 month old gc in a pushchair so did check if there were any cars - luckily. What if it was a child who saw the green man and just walked across.
I did manage to get/remember the car reg no. Can I do anything about this idiot.

It’s bad but without video evidence it’ll be a ‘prove it’ situation i think. You should always check before crossing anyway, same as if you are driving and get a green light you should still glance to see if everything has stopped at every single junction. Unless there were traffic light cameras but there aren’t usually at pedestrian crossings. Hope you and DGS are ok, what a nasty shock

Pointless reporting as police won't do anything.

People need to take their own precautions, i.e. check traffic has stopped before crossing the road, etc.

I got in the bad habit of not checking both ways when crossing a one way street on my daily walk home from work - I walk towards oncoming traffic so I can see if there's traffic or not. Once I was nearly obliterated when I stepped off the kerb and some lunatic was driving the wrong way up the road - it was literally a hair breadth away from being hit. Never made that mistake again. Yes, it would have been the driver's fault, but that's no consolation when I'm six feet under!

Drivers are told to assume all other drivers are idiots when they take driving lessons, and pedestrians need to think the same way.

I had this happen whilst crossing with my 7 year old recently.
We were halfway across the road and a woman just smiled at me, like she was totally mental, and carried on going.
It was like she was enjoying the fact she knew she was running the red light.
Utter weirdo. I'm just glad I was switched on enough to realise in advance that she wasn't going to stop and put my arm across my daughter to stop her.

I honestly wish I'd thrown something at her car.
Stupid bitch.

I wouldn't say it's pointless. Phone 101. Don't crossings often have CCTV?

UnimaginableWindBird · 05/12/2023 18:28

They s happens to me every couple of weeks or so. The worst time was when the driver was the mother of one of Dad's school friends who waved as I dragged my toddler back onto the pavement.

Oh I have this all the time on zebra crossings people think they can just smile and wave as if to say sorry for nearly running me over…

I agree. I’ve done this without the reg number; the police said they would definitely have followed it up had I taken the number. There’s an online 101 which is easy to use.

Daffodildilys · 05/12/2023 18:53

@TitInATrance - thanks. I’m going to fill in a 101 form.
