Wow this school term is dragging on

Not really an Aibu but more of a handhold.

My 14 year old is shattered. Struggling with school mornings when is usually fine.
She is being rude and obnoxious in the morning, at home and at the weekend, I am in tears most days with her rudeness one way or another ( out of her view)

She is so tired, school is very demanding and still 2.5 weeks to go. This term is dragging so much. I don't know how we will get to the end of it at the moment

Same marking - 100 GCSE, and 30 Level mocks will help the time fly by..... This is the hardest term of the year and always has been.

I hear you. Mine are 12 and 9. Gradually losing the plot ( and that’s just me).

Its full of illness and thoroughly miserable at the moment at school, despite Christmas festivities etc

MrsMurphyIWish · 05/12/2023 17:56

Agree. I’ve been teaching for 26 years and I have never broken up this late before - I don’t break up til the 22nd and neither do my children. I’m knackered, my kids are knackered, the kids I teach are knackered. I imagine lots of fights and tears before the 22nd!

HamsterBanana · 05/12/2023 17:57

Still 3 weeks to go for my youngest. Really they should have more time off in the winter and less in the summer I.e Christmas hols should be 3.5 weeks and summer 4 weeks would make so much more sense.

whirlycloud · 05/12/2023 17:58

bloody yes it is. can't wait for it to end!

caramac04 · 05/12/2023 18:02

The year we worked so close to Christmas I ended up with my Christmas online shop being delivered by both Morrisons and Sainsbury’s. I was really stressed as hosting 12 on Christmas Eve and 13 Christmas Day and a bit of open house Boxing Day and just lost the plot a bit. We laugh now but it was all a bit much and I’m an adult. It’s a lot for the kids tbh.

Squirrelsnut · 05/12/2023 18:02

It's interminable. I teach and we all look grey and drawn. The kids are playing up and shattered too.

mnahmnah · 05/12/2023 18:06

Teacher here and we don’t break up until the 21st. Someone in their wisdom decided to put yr 10 mocks in the last week! Poor kids. Then we have to mark them over Christmas.

mnahmnah · 05/12/2023 18:07

Oh and one year we broke up on the 23rd! That was fun

FranticHare · 05/12/2023 18:11

I hate this term. Especially for those in their first year of a new school Its exhausting for them. Learning how the new school operates, all the social trials as they make new friendship groups - which will breakdown /change regularly just to add more stress. As well as all the new subjects and teachers to get used to. Not to mention the increase in homework.

Hate it!!

tearsandtiaras · 05/12/2023 18:11

My daughter has "spring term exams" the first week back. Like hell she is spending the Christmas break working.

I don't remember things being this bad aside from when she was in reception

She is completely spent and I feel so guilty forcing her to go in every morning then come home and work all night with homework.

Her extra curriculars seem to have homework too at the minute.

She doesn't break up until 21st . Its crazy. Why so late???

We’ve all been so ill on and off but something every week since September. It’s not natural or right to be exposed to so many germs so constantly, I’m fed up.

Sirzy · 05/12/2023 18:12

Staff fully agree with you too! We don’t finish until the 22nd.

next half term is only 4 weeks for us, I would much rather have finished a week sooner for Christmas and have a week extra next half term!

Sirzy · 05/12/2023 18:14

To be honest if she is that run down I would let her have a day off to chill and do nothing, maybe Friday to give her 3 days of relaxing? She isn’t going to be able to learn if knackered anyway.

WaitingfortheTardis · 05/12/2023 18:15

We're also finishing on the 22nd, who is it that sets these dates? I really would like to complain as it just seems unfair on adults and children to have it so ridiculously close.

tearsandtiaras · 05/12/2023 18:15

She can't have any time off or I would let her- she had a week off with covid and I got a letter recently about attendance ☹️ despite sending in proof and hospitalisation proof. So she has to soldier on

It does feel like they are breaking up very close to Christmas.

My birthday is 23rd and I dont remember ever breaking up from school so close to my birthday! In fact it always seemed to fall in the middle of the hols.

Maybe it's changed since I was at school?

Eldest is y4 so not had experience of that many Christmas breaks yet

chosenone · 05/12/2023 18:23

Things feel weirdly tense in our school. Like no one wants to be there already 😔 we’ve got lots of important mocks and assessments and concert done. It feels like we’re just marking time until the 22nd!

I Wonder if it’s because Xmas ‘starts’ so early nowadays. Trees are up, Xmas films were on all weekend, we’ve had festive weather but we’ve got ages to go 😔

avocadotofu · 05/12/2023 18:28

I'm with you OP. I'm a teacher and DS5 has just started reception and the kids I teach and DS are all either ill or exhausted. I finish on the 20th and he finished on the 22nd!!

lanthanum · 05/12/2023 23:04

The cold weather really takes it out of the kids - just walking to and from school saps more energy than usual. I remember previous cold snaps when everyone seemed to be struggling.

Pottedpalm · 06/12/2023 00:07

DD is a teacher; she breaks up on Thursday until after new year.

Blinkingmarvellous · 06/12/2023 00:13

Your poor daughter sounds really run down. I would let her have time off if she needs it. If she was in hospital then the covid must have been bad and it wouldn't be surprising if there is somd post viral exhaustion
