I was walking home from picking up ds from mil's. I got to the traffic lights and waited until the little green man appeared.
I went to cross over like anybody would and both me and ds in his pushchair nearly got hit by a bloody police car!!

His lights were flashing but no siren.
Surely or am I stupid, when you approach a junction you should have your sirens on incase someone(like me) is crossing the road.

They did stop and say sorry and checked we were both ok. Ds just laughed at them and waved!!

No YANBU, people have been killed by police behaving like that.

hotmama · 13/03/2008 21:16

YABU.

May not have had the siren on because they wanted cars to get out of the way and wanted to "creep" up on someone.

Even my 3 year old knows that you don't go just because the green man is on - you still have to look at the traffic.

However, if they had time to stop and talk to you they were hardly rushing then were they - does beg the question why they were flashing their lights and going over a green light though.

God, how scary! a police car very nearly took out my mum in her car once, she was turning right at the lights, and along came the police car, she couldn't see properly due to other traffic blocking her view and it very nearly hit her head on.

YANBU at all. No excuse for the police, of all people, to drive so recklessly.

cory · 13/03/2008 21:51

I had the same experience with one of those ambulance cars, and they didn't stop. No lights flashing, no sirens, just went straight through green lights. And they came really fast round the corner, too.

Hard to see any reason why they should creep up on someone- unless they're touting for business .

kayzisbroody · 13/03/2008 21:56

If they had put their sirens on just for the junction I wouldn't have started to cross until they had passed.

YANBU really scary

Joolyjoolyjoo · 13/03/2008 22:25

YANBU- my dad came off his motorbike after meeting a police car driving on the wrong side of the road with lights, but no sirens on! they too had time to stop and help him, they said they someone had reported a car stolen!! Not sure that warrants nearly killing someone, but there you go.

kayzisbroody · 13/03/2008 22:28

Oh god Jooly, was he ok?

YANBU - I tell my dc's that they still have to check for traffic even if the green man is there.

bigbumhole · 13/03/2008 22:38

Thats awful, what idiots They couldn't have been in that much of a hurry if they had time to stop and apologies!

If an emergency service needs to go through a red light, they have to have their sirens on, flashing lights and not exceed 30ph, its the law.

YANB

monkeytrousers · 13/03/2008 22:43

I know someoen who left the service cos she didn't know who she disliked most, the crims or the police.

Maybe it's a bit like the Army; alot go in just to stop themselves getting into trouble?
