Work situation - is this reasonable?

I'm in a mid senior role in financial services. Work part time (4 days, not condensed) but still get a full time workload done. Am expected to travel around once a month for work which ends up in me doing more than my paid hours that week. I don't get that time back and I still have to get my work done.

Next Monday I've been asked to travel for a department wide 'away day' which will basically just be a talking shop. This would mean me leaving home at 6.30am and not getting back til around 8pm. I've said I'm not going and my manager is trying to pressure me. AIBU to stick to my guns?

Also for further salary context, my pay band stretches from £60k to £110k. The company merged two pay bands a few years back and those of us on the previous lower band have never been given appropriate pay increases to catch them up. But the expectation is that we now work at the higher level band. So kind of like being given a promotion that a) you didn't ask for and b) you're not getting paid for.

and you have remained on the same pay for years, no inflationary increase and is below your colleagues?

Floofydawg · 01/01/2024 19:51

Inflationary increases apply to the salary bands. So getting inflation doesn't move you up the band. And getting a 'good' score only really gets you an inflation rise if you're lucky. It doesn't mean that I'm shit at my job if that's what you're implying.

bottom of band for years…. i can’t believe you’ve stuck it out tbh. To leave multiple annual performance reviews and to have received zero increase… must be a killer

rochethenut · 01/01/2024 19:54

any bonuses?

Floofydawg · 01/01/2024 19:56

I didn't say zero increase did I? Yes, I get an annual bonus. But I'm in my fifties and finding it hard to change jobs.

Am feeling massively uplifted by this thread - it's a great example of MN at it's best. Thankyou to those who have given me constructive advice, it's given me the power to stand up for myself.

how’s it gone since then?

apologies i read this to mean no increase

I've been at the bottom of my salary band for as long as I can remember.

Floofydawg · 02/01/2024 07:58

@rochethenut well I've been off over Xmas so... But I did take the time off in lieu for the long day.

You have been off since the 5th december? lucky you!

Floofydawg · 02/01/2024 12:00

Erm no, you seem to misinterpret everything I say.

OP posts:
rochethenut · 02/01/2024 12:03

you said that you’ve now been empowered to stand up for yourself going forward re what work expects of you

5th december

i asked how had it gone since then

you said off over christmas
😐

Floofydawg · 02/01/2024 12:15

I've posted updates since 5th Dec - you clearly haven't read them

OP posts:
rochethenut · 02/01/2024 12:22

i have

and not one referred to the generally standing up for yourself in terms of only working what you are prepared to do

Floofydawg · 02/01/2024 12:15

I've posted updates since 5th Dec - you clearly haven't read them

the majority of which are arguing back and forth

you had said on the 5th *and I will be sticking mainly to my hours

and literally all i was doing was asking how that had gone because you hadn’t updated on the more general problem you were encountering at work of them expecting you to work so many more hours than paid for.

For the love of god, would you stop arguing. The OP's posts have been very clear.

and your only post today. Interesting. OP!

Floofydawg · 03/01/2024 06:50

I think you're suggesting I name changed to tell you to stop arguing. I didn't. But I don't know what your problem is.

OP posts:
rochethenut · 03/01/2024 08:13

i asked how you’d got on standing up for yourself since you started the thread as you’d said you had felt more assertive.

and you have taken great offence at the question it would seem

rochethenut · 03/01/2024 08:13

rochethenut · 01/01/2024 19:58

how’s it gone since then?

that was the question that seems to have riled you

Floofydawg · 03/01/2024 08:16

I haven't taken offence. I just felt you were getting at me and questioning everything I said. And then there was the name change accusation.

The situation hasn't arisen again yet due to the quiet Xmas period. And as I said before, I took time back in lieu for the extra travelling time on the day which started this entire post.

Commuting isn’t factored into most people’s working week. I work 37.5 hrs and drive for 10 - I don’t get paid for that or TOIL.

Floofydawg · 24/02/2024 14:33

@Lobberto there's commuting to your local office though, and then there's travelling further. What I described isn't usual commuting.

OP posts:
greencheetah · 24/02/2024 14:40

Yes, commuting to your contractual work place usually can’t be claimed back in time or expenses, but if it is anywhere else it should be, and definitely would be where I work.

I have colleagues whose contractual work place is their home address and they are able to claim both time and mileage from home to anywhere they go for work.
