"Right to Rent" share codes

Trying to rent out my spare room to help with mortgage / bills. Put an advert on spare room showing the room and asking for references / deposit / one month's rent up front, and as part of that process I need to ask for their NI number and a copy of their passport.

When they decline I ask them for a "right to rent" share code, as I believe I am required to do. From my point of view, as a single person, I don't want to let strangers into my home unless I have checked their identity etc.

I am getting a lot of abuse about me being unreasonable / racist / sexist / transphobic etc. However as far as I am concerned I am just following the required procedure(s). AIBU or are there alternative ways of renting a room?
