I live in another European country

Seeing all the snowy posts and the variety of fun Christmas things to do has made me pine for it more 😢

Do you have horses?

Op and antikkiti - sorry for the rather obvious question - but do you speak the local language/French? Doing so will open up a whole new world of possibilities for you if not.

Also, speaking as an immigrant, this time of the year is always the most difficult when you miss family and all of the Christmas traditions back in the UK. It’s completely different in summer when you have visitors and sunshine and you can get out and about much more. So give it time. I have come to really love the less commercial Christmas where I live now. It’s quiet but lovely. And we have integrated British traditions in to our Christmas too for the dc.

Wishing everyone who is homesick right now a very happy Advent and build up to the holiday period and NY.

Ha, I thought it was the shit state of the country that was making you feel like that.

Life in England is now more miserable than it has been for 40 years. One snowy landscape picture tells nothing like the whole story. Inflation without pay rises fir many, obscene energy costs, ie cold houses, obscene house prices and rents, foodbanks, a worthless corrupt government bleeding us dry, NHS waiting lists, even worse that the last time the tories were in power. Meantime a handful of people are happy as pigs in the proverbial with money pouring into their pockets (tax havens) whilst poncing off the rest of us. The OP is pining for a romanticised version that exists for the few.

Inflation without pay rises fir many, obscene energy costs, ie cold houses, obscene house prices and rent ah this sums up Canada for me!

Desecratedcoconut · 05/12/2023 12:59

Out of curiosity, how much is the cost of a kwh of gas in Canada?

Pomonas · 06/12/2023 13:02

Yes, Canada too. It seems that middle class in every developed country has been affected due to salaries not rising to cope with inflation. Eroding the middle classes is not a good outlook. A place with only rich and poor is the path to authoritarian governments where they can control the poorest and the rich can leave or live without issues if the wealth is offshore. Hopefully this is just a phase in history where lessons are learned. I guess we need to live where we feel the happiest if possible while we endure this shitty period.
