My soul aches for England

I live in another European country

Seeing all the snowy posts and the variety of fun Christmas things to do has made me pine for it more 😢

Watch 5 minutes of the news and it will soon pass 😂

Supertatofortea · 03/12/2023 09:59

@Lex345 Yes, but does it reflect actual, real life for the majority?
For example, the post on here of what people are doing today just sounds so lovely

Yes because driving around on slippery Icey snowy roads when you live surrounded by hills is fun.
My Facebook feed is full of people stuck on grass verges.

It's not all that cracked up to be:

My soul aches for England (and the rest of the UK) too, but for very different reasons.

Nitgel · 03/12/2023 10:02

London is fab this year. London is great reat of uk meh 😉

hby9628 · 03/12/2023 10:04

I'm in England. Tiny smattering of snow that now makes outside just look grey & soggy. It's also freezing cold. Hope that's helped!

No. But MN group think is that England is The Worst so you won't get a rational view here

THisbackwithavengeance · 03/12/2023 10:07

What??

It's fucking freezing. I need to go out later and will need to clear my car of snow and negotiate the ungritted roads. I just CBA.

I want to be somewhere warmish and be able to see the sun.

Well I can't speak for the majority of people, but the cost of living crisis has hit a lot of people very severely, food banks are struggling to keep up with demand, people struggling to buy baby milk, people unable to afford to heat their homes (and warrants are coming back as well), COVID inquiry, political landscape and increasing polarisation. Embarassing political standpoints on certain issues. Under funded public services.

We do nice things sometimes too-and I am not sure where you live-but when the WHO are even weighing in on poverty in this country, its pretty obvious something is going wrong.

ShowOfHands · 03/12/2023 10:08

Ah op. Are you English?

I'm not sure that people griping about the weather isn't adding to the general sense of Britishness tbh!

I adore this time of year. Plenty of events, lights, frost and a general air of anticipation. We are making decorations and mince pies today, Christmas music on and it feels lovely.

I think it's fine to yearn for it. Can you create any of it where you are?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/12/2023 10:08

It's damp and grey and sodden here today - we just got back from a very muddy junior parkrun and I bet my bones ache more than your soul does.

Circularargument · 03/12/2023 10:08

It's cold and damp and it's winter in the Northern Hemisphere. What do people expect? Stay in and read a book, that's my plan😋

YireosDodeAver · 03/12/2023 10:09

It's just damp and drizzly. But sometimes the soul can ache for damp and drizzly.

sugarandsweetener · 03/12/2023 10:09

I am in Kent

and i feel very very very happy and blessed to live here

SoddingWeddings · 03/12/2023 10:09

It's not snowy in the majority of the country. It's just fucking cold, grey and wet.

You're not missing much!

DoktorPeppa · 03/12/2023 10:09

Yeah, it's lovely and cold and can't afford to put the heating on.

This!

Finlesswonder · 03/12/2023 10:11

I moved back to UK a few months ago and it's great.

The UK has always been down on itself, most of the chronic whiners can't quite bring themselves to try somewhere else...

Simonjt · 03/12/2023 10:11

We live in another european country too, but here nothing comes to a halt when it snows, so you can enjoy sledding etc, and still send the kids to school!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/12/2023 10:13

It's true there are lots of fun Christmas things on though. Do they not have that where you are?

Ginmonkeyagain · 03/12/2023 10:13

I wasn't feeling very well disposed towards our winter weather wrestling half frozen washing off the line this morning. But I do love the very defined seasons we have in the UK.

Even walking back in the freezing fog yesterday evening was very atmospheric and made my warm flat even more welcome.

It's a lovely time of year.
Being a miserable fucker is a typical British / Mumsnet thing.

Supertatofortea · 03/12/2023 10:17

@Finlesswonder Where did you come back from, out of interest?
