To think that Snapchat is shady?

Well, for one, I don't really understand anybody over the age of mid 20s having it in the first place.

We know that pictures usually auto save on Whatsapp, text messages are easily seen, as are Facebook messages.

Snapchat allows you to send snaps that get deleted after opening for example. Which I dont really get as I cant easily follow a conversation.

Anybody that asks for my Snapchat is usually someone I used to speak to on dating apps, or sleazy men that like sending dick pics etc.

AIBU to think its a rather suspicious form of communication if you see this app on say, your partners phone?

I have never really used it so maybe I am biased 😁

In my experience snap is mainly used for dodgy purposes if it's someone over the age of early 20s

Usernamenoavailable · 03/12/2023 09:11

My ex partner cheated on me using Snapchat, he was mid 30s. I have the app but I don’t use it as a form of communication.

So yes, I would say it’s for dodgy purposes.

megletthesecond · 03/12/2023 09:15

It's really weird. 17yo DS and his mates seem to use it for sending thumbs up photos of themselves every 30 mins.
He knows I think it's nuts.

flowerchild2000 · 03/12/2023 09:19

YES!! This is so spot on. My teen DD uses it and wanted me to chat with her there which is totally fine, nothing shady of course. It's perfect for teens girls, it's cute and fun.

But anytime I see Snap on a dating app, hard pass! They are ALWAYS sleazy! Sometimes married and cheating sleazy, other times possibly a criminal sleazy, but definitely one flavor of creep or another. A grown man on Snap is just NO.

Yeah it seems like a weird way to communicate where people cant see your public profiles and also dont have your number.

I am also suspicious of anyone with high snap scores of say over 100k.. How are they getting these unless they are sending pics and videos 24/7?! 😂

I have got asked for mine mostly by men, but I dont give it out as I dont use it and they all seem confused 😂

Even with kids It's a platform for bullying. Nobody can see what's being said or has been said, unless someone has screen shotted it

Usernamenoavailable · 03/12/2023 09:31

Yeah when I was on dating sites they were always asking for it. Now I don’t bother with the sites. I can’t be bothered with the sleazy men anymore! 😂

My ex also had a high score but he was always on his phone so I don’t think I can trust anyone anymore 😂

Oh I agree. I wont be allowing my DS to ever have it.

They do get a notification that something has been screenshotted though. That is as much as I know about it!

I know that some maybe used it back when they were younger, hence the high scores. I know lots of my female friends that used to be out several times a week in teens/early 20s that used to share every part of their day on it, which is where I think it has come from.

I have a couple married friends who still use it daily but I think more so out of habit.

Im not single at the moment but if I ever am again, I will never use dating sites and would happily stay single forever! Dating sites made me a depressed, anxious mess.

I use it and I'm not dodgy. It's the preferred app of choice for teenagers here so I use it to communicate with my kids.

TurquoiseSeasAndSilverSand · 03/12/2023 09:38

It's a bloody nightmare at school. Pretty much when there is any trouble and bullying online, then it's via Snapchat, so proof is difficult. Even in the sixth form it's an issue, so it's not a case of kids having SM too young. I dread to think of it being used by adults in abusive situations.

No Snapchat isn’t shady but sometimes the people that use it are. I have it but it’s just a way me and friends used to send random pics to each other…. Coffee in a coffee shop, pic of dinner random stuff

Tessisme · 03/12/2023 10:09

DS1 is 15 and stays in touch with his cousin using Snapchat (we're in NI, cousin is in England.) SIL is extremely religious and tries to control every aspect of her 16yo DS's life. So he uses Snapchat because he knows the exchanges will disappear. Even very innocuous stuff would be viewed by her and her DH as 'sinful'. I guess it has its uses😆

Oh I can see why in that case!

SC doesnt really work in N.I (I live here too!) As everyone knows everyone anyhow 😂

My best friend uses it to chat also which is why I kept it

However, the majority ive seen are all mainly sleazy men. I had men who were in relationships send me dick pics that disappeared once I opened them 🤮

No need for that 🤢🤮🤮

Why do men do this? Is there a woman anywhere that is turned on by unsolicited dick pics? It's hardly an attractive part of the body, I wouldn't send a pic of my vag to a bloke either. Maybe I'm just super naive.
