What have you washed in the washing machine by mistake?

My dh's work trousers have a lot of pockets and sometimes I miss one.

I find this out when something starts clicking in the washing machine.

Last week I washed a lighter (dh doesn't smoke...) and the key to my car, battery and all.

Both items still work, so I'm not sure how effective my washing machine is.

What is the weirdest thing you have washed in the machine, by accident or design?

About $200. They came out undamaged though. My only attempt at money laundering. 😛

A book
Was on a round of night duty and had been reading game of thrones. After my ND was finished I had a few hrs nap and swept all the bed clothes up in my arms to wash (and stop myself sleeping more). I threw them in the machine and went to have lunch with a friend. Came back to hang out the sheets and found a very swollen book that thankfully hadn't melted like tissues.
Did need to replace it to finish the book :)

A memory stick- it still worked afterwards!

A used sanitary towel (dd had flung pants in wash basket with it still attached, which is grim). It came out of the machine still stuck to gusset of pants immaculately clean and fully intact. Could this be my cost of living money saving tip? 🤣

You can get a whole packet of sanitary towels for a few pounds

MatJas · 03/12/2023 00:39

When dh smoked i washed a full pack of cigarettes

BashfulClam · 03/12/2023 00:52

I pulled some washing out the machine and one of my shoes fell out. I must have scooped it up with the washing as I used to just throw it from the basket into a pile on the floor. Good leather Clark’s shoe and it was fine for a few more years.

I washed DD's work ID badge - and there was a massive mystery bc she couldn't find it anywhere. I said, well I can't have washed it as I would have heard it in the drum (it's metal). I made her hunt everywhere for it and then as a last resort stuck my head into the empty washer - and there it was. It has a strong magnet to attach it to itself (iyswim) and it was stuck to the drum - hence no washer rattle! Good thing I checked tho or it would still be there now.

TV remote, it was in our bed sheets!

Robyn847 · 03/12/2023 06:37

Fitbit.

It survived and thought I'd done 24 miles! 🤣

Nursemumma92 · 03/12/2023 06:49

A used nappy!! Had accidentally scooped it up with a load of washing. Had to scrape out all the crystals out of the machine, off the clothes then rewash everything.

Beaverbridge · 03/12/2023 06:49

Phone that was inside a duvet cover. Totally goosed.
Car keys.
Wrecked a beautiful jumper that had a row of large sequins down the front. Sequins tangled up and ripped the fabric. Don't know what I was thinking!.

BoobyDazzler · 03/12/2023 06:54

Several set of dh’s running headphones, tissues, sanitary towels - thanks dad! And it’s a rare day when I don’t find a bit of flint or clay pipe wedged in the door amongst ds’s sweet wrappers!

I don’t think she was serious 🤣

Barleycat · 03/12/2023 06:58

A charging plug to put a USB in and s large tub of moisturiser. Moisturiser survived. The following day i tried to use the plug to charge my phone having forgotten it had been in the machine. There was a bang and a puff of smoke when i plugged it in!

A drill bit.

It smashed the glass.

Tough morning that was.

Oh god I dread this happening. My DH has work trousers with 20 million pockets and he's a fucker for shoving screws and drill bits in different pockets. Hearing your story I'm going to be extra vigilant now🤣

A used nappy. That was fun.

Same. A few times actually. Bonus points for giving it a whirl in the dryer. 🤮

Wedding certificate. We had been married 3 weeks.

It didn't survive.

Did the marriage survive though🤔

13.5 years so far!

TooBusyGazingAtStarss · 03/12/2023 07:05

@Devilsmommy I make him do his own work washing now for this reason.

I refuse to stick my hands in his dirty pockets.

chouxfleur · 03/12/2023 07:06

A very large millipede when on holiday in a villa in Spain. It must have been hiding in the washing machine already, or maybe in the wash basket with the dirty clothes.

It survived the wash and came out of the machine alive and wriggling!!

Lovely 😍

A pull up - twice. 5 year old DS has started putting his PJ's in the wash basket but takes the pull up off with his pj bottoms and they're constantly tangled 🤦🏼‍♀️
Tissues, usually my own fault.
Conkers, 3 year old is constantly collecting 'treasure'.
A lighter - DHs.
Endless amounts of bobbles and clips from 3 year olds pocket.
A mobile phone in my teens.
A watch in my teens.

I really should check pockets better 🤔

Devilsmommy · 03/12/2023 07:10

@TooBusyGazingAtStarss completely get why but I just know mine would forget and break my machine 😂 I've got a 14mo so cannot manage without my washing machine 😆

Yeah.. ive got a 3 and a 2 year old so it was a hellish 4-5 days when the glass smashed. But I refuse now. Because it was my fault.. empty your bloody pockets mannnn xx

Timeturnerplease · 03/12/2023 07:53

DH’s passport. Years ago, before children, he’d been on a city break with friends and just chucked all the clothes he’d used straight from his suitcase into the laundry basket. He tried to blame me for not checking the pockets; obviously that argument didn’t fly!

He had to go up to London to get it replaced, as we were due to go away for our summer holiday a few weeks later. Taught him a valuable lesson about checking his pockets. Don’t mess with my laundry/cleaning system, just like I don’t mess with his food shopping/cooking/gardening system.
