To clutch my pearls (about a song)

I'm going to do two threads tonight, both totally different. The other one will hopefully cheer me up after a bit of pearl clutching.

I was just at a birthday party for a 12 year old girl. There were maybe 25 girls there, and younger siblings too, aged 5-10 judging by height. Also I asked some of them.

Obviously I'm decrepit and know nothing about music these days. For context: when I was 12 and my friends were listening to take that, I was secretly listening to the Lion King soundtrack. Maybe that gives you an idea, but I went to a normal secondary in a working class town.

Anyway the music at this party made me feel so old. I did shazam a number of them, but there were lyrics like, (paraphrasing) "girl I'm looking at your physique", etc etc, or, "birthday sex! Birthday sex!" all delightfully sexual and tracks one and two on Now That's What I Call A PreTeen Birthday Party.

But then on came a song that really took the biscuit from under my nose, so to speak, and it is the main part of my aibu - aibu to clutch my pearls. Reminder, there were children aged 5-10 also present.

I don't want to quote the lyrics here, but if you are of strong stomach, you fancy Googling it, your children are safely asleep, and you know how to delete your browsing history, the song was called (according to shazam) "Or Nah".

If you don't want to look it up, and I don't blame you if you don't, to give you a toned down idea, here is an edited version:

*
Lots of smoking and drinking, that's the ticket!
But I'm not sure my dear old mum would approve of you,
So shall we have a cuddle in a few minutes anyway?
This bottle of Pol Roger is pricey, so will you marry me if I buy it for you?
I'd love to have babies with you, but we should get some practice in first, but I don't believe in sex before marriage so we'll have to find another way.

We can sit cheek to cheek
Can you tie a knot in a cherry stalk with your tongue?
I'm an Obstetrician so can help you with your kegels
But my phone is broken so I'll be unable to call you tomorrow. I'll send a telegram instead, dearest.
My bed is also broken so I've been sleeping on the kitchen table.

So whaddya think? Yes? Or "nah"?
*

The real song is, shall we say, much, much fruitier. The kids of today! But what surprised me the most is that the mum was right there in the room! And all the girls were singing along! Apparently the song isn't even new - it must have totally passed me by, but I don't expect it gets much radio airplay.

And then there were some songs about drugs and murder and other lovely things.

Aibu? I just read the thread about granddad's pride and wept a bit about the world so I thought I'd share this.

Final thought: the girls were taking endless selfie, and were pretty much totally covering their faces in the pictures. Is that a thing now?

Missing the point but why were you at a 12yo's party?

mikado1 · 03/12/2023 15:09

YABU

My 9 yo ds and I were enjoying singing a long to a song together and even out together a dance routine to a verse so I looked up the words to the rest of it. That was the end of that!! It was Low by Flo Rida. I like it and had always sung along, as an adult, without taking the meaning in. 🥵

Boots with the fur (with the fur)
The whole club was lookin' at her
She hit the floor (she hit the floor)
Next thing you know
Shawty got low, low, low, low, low, low, low, low
Them baggy sweat pants and the Reeboks with the straps (with the straps)
She turned around and gave that big booty a slap (hey)
She hit the floor (she hit the floor)
Next thing you know
Shawty got low, low, low, low, low, low, low, low
Hey, I ain't never seen nothin' that'll make me go
This crazy all night, spending my dough
Had the million dollar vibe and a body to go
Them birthday cakes, they stole the show
So sexual
She was flexible, professional
Drinkin' X and O
Hold up wait a minute, do I see what I think I-, whoa
Did her thing, I seen shawty get low
Ain't the same when it's up that close
Make it rain, I'm makin' it snow
Work the pole, I got the bankroll
I'ma say that I prefer the no clothes
I'm into that, I love women exposed
She threw it back at me, I gave her more
Cash ain't a problem, I know where it go
She had them apple bottom jeans (jeans)
Boots with the fur (with the fur)
The whole club was lookin' at her
She hit the floor (she hit the floor)
Next thing you know
Shawty got low, low, low, low, low, low, low, low
Them baggy sweat pants and the Reeboks with the straps (with the straps)
She turned around and gave that big booty a slap (ayy)
She hit the floor (she hit the floor)
Next thing you know
Shawty got low, low, low, low, low, low, low, low
Hey, shawty, what I gotta do to get you home?
My jeans filled with guap and they ready for shones
Cadillacs, Maybachs for the sexy grown
Patron on the rocks that'll make your moan
One stack c'mon, two stacks c'mon, three stacks c'mon
Now that's three grand
What you think I'm playin'? Baby-girl, I'm the man
I invented rubber bands
That's what I told her, her legs on my shoulders
I knew it was over
That Henny and Cola got me like a soldier
She ready for Rover, I couldn't control her
So lucky, oh, me, I was just like a clover
Shawty was hot like a toaster
Sorry, but I had to fold her
Like a pornography poster, she showed her

Remember singing along to "Do you wanna touch me" by Gary Glitter back in the 70s and watching him on Top Of The Pops doing rude hand gestures.

I can remember the outrage caused by the Stones performing "(I can't get no) Satisfaction" on Ready Steady Go, because it was on in the early evening when children would be watching.

We used to sing it among ourselves at primary school, without any idea what the lyrics meant.

Notimeforaname · 03/12/2023 15:13

Most kids listen to inappropriate songs. At 12, we were all listening to Eminem. It had no effect on my life. They were just songs to nod along to.

Notimeforaname · 03/12/2023 15:14

At 8 we were all singing "if you wanna be my lover" 🤷‍♀️

StephanieSuperpowers · 03/12/2023 15:21

I think there was a difference in tone though, if you wanna be my lover etc wasn't about pornified descriptions of people and acts.

hookiewookie29 · 03/12/2023 14:25

Only found out recently that Chain Reaction by Duana Ross is about a threesome!

That I didn’t know!!

I hear you but "slam your body down and wind it all around" bit sexual 🤣 2become 1 . All those songs are about sex.

But the point is, they're songs. It's fine. It wont ruin anyone's children's lives.

Notimeforaname · 03/12/2023 15:29

"I'm horny" 🤣 we all ran around screaming that song at the top of our lungs as kids in the 90s. Nobody knew or cared what it meant.

Glasgowgal200 · 03/12/2023 15:32

Blondie's song Atomic I loved when I was younger then when I was older I realised what the lyric Make me tonight meant!!!!!

Cloudisi · 03/12/2023 15:53

50 Cent Ayo Technology was played at the Year 7 disco when I was at school

The penny dropped about "G like MC who likes it on an E" for me nearly a decade later when I first had sex on a pill

Have never heard this (sheltered life/middle aged) but I much prefer your lyrics, OP. I heard it in a jolly Joyce Grenfell voice. It's maybe the Mike Flowers Pops cover version?

Thanks so much! I think my version has zest!

Chain Reaction is about threesomes 😮
I only recently from MN found out it was about sex o thought it was about infatuation

maybe some of us on here have cleaner minds 😇

Funkyslippers · 03/12/2023 19:05

I refuse to believe that Chain Reaction or Downtown are about anything dark or overly sexual. A quick Google search confirms what I thought. Some people love to turn meanings of songs in to something they're not!

Allfur · 03/12/2023 19:08

If there is room for nuance or interpretation then it's a very different kettle of fish

SequinsandStiIettos · 03/12/2023 19:09

You make me tremble when your hand moves lower
You taste a little then you swallow slower

Erm...that's from Chain Reaction and seems a bit intimate Grin
There was a whole thread on it a few weeks ago!
I'm on here too much

avocadotofu · 03/12/2023 19:14

I'm with you OP definitely not a song for kids!

Alargeoneplease89 · 03/12/2023 19:16

At 12, I was listening to candy shop, PIMP etc by 50 cent - pony by genuine - lots of eminem and other rnb artists. I didnt lost my V until 16 😂obviously all the sexual lyrics didnt have any impact whatsoever.

It's like The simpsons- I melt a tiny bit when all the sexual innuendos come on and my kids have watched it from a young age- goes over their head like it did mine when I was a kid.

HRTQueen · 03/12/2023 19:27

I absolutely love the song PIMP especially the Snoop Dogg version

and I call myself an ardent feminist 😳😳😳

I’m old enough to have been in the 6th form when the BBC banned Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood and it got to number 1. We used to listen to the Top 40 on a Tuesday lunch time in the common room and then someone would put the single on the music centre when they didn’t play it.

I am not, and never have been, overly fazed by enthusiastic consensual sex songs, especially the double meaning ones - but I do not like the explicit misogynistic/coercive ones.

Funkyslippers · 03/12/2023 19:28

SequinsandStiIettos well yes, of course it's intimate but that's all. Just because there's been a thread about it doesn't mean it's anything more than that

I merrily sang Chain Reaction when I was about 12 or 13. Turns out it's about having orgasms.

It about female multiple orgasms though and it’s rather joyful. The symbolism in the video is fantastic! I don’t get any sense that Mr Or Nah has any interest in his female partner’s orgasms.

I agree. No problem with lyrics about sex, but misogyny/ coercion etc is very distasteful.
