To clutch my pearls (about a song)

ChangeNameLikeIChangeSocks · 02/12/2023 21:53

I'm going to do two threads tonight, both totally different. The other one will hopefully cheer me up after a bit of pearl clutching.

I was just at a birthday party for a 12 year old girl. There were maybe 25 girls there, and younger siblings too, aged 5-10 judging by height. Also I asked some of them.

Obviously I'm decrepit and know nothing about music these days. For context: when I was 12 and my friends were listening to take that, I was secretly listening to the Lion King soundtrack. Maybe that gives you an idea, but I went to a normal secondary in a working class town.

Anyway the music at this party made me feel so old. I did shazam a number of them, but there were lyrics like, (paraphrasing) "girl I'm looking at your physique", etc etc, or, "birthday sex! Birthday sex!" all delightfully sexual and tracks one and two on Now That's What I Call A PreTeen Birthday Party.

But then on came a song that really took the biscuit from under my nose, so to speak, and it is the main part of my aibu - aibu to clutch my pearls. Reminder, there were children aged 5-10 also present.

I don't want to quote the lyrics here, but if you are of strong stomach, you fancy Googling it, your children are safely asleep, and you know how to delete your browsing history, the song was called (according to shazam) "Or Nah".

If you don't want to look it up, and I don't blame you if you don't, to give you a toned down idea, here is an edited version:

*
Lots of smoking and drinking, that's the ticket!
But I'm not sure my dear old mum would approve of you,
So shall we have a cuddle in a few minutes anyway?
This bottle of Pol Roger is pricey, so will you marry me if I buy it for you?
I'd love to have babies with you, but we should get some practice in first, but I don't believe in sex before marriage so we'll have to find another way.

We can sit cheek to cheek
Can you tie a knot in a cherry stalk with your tongue?
I'm an Obstetrician so can help you with your kegels
But my phone is broken so I'll be unable to call you tomorrow. I'll send a telegram instead, dearest.
My bed is also broken so I've been sleeping on the kitchen table.

So whaddya think? Yes? Or "nah"?

The real song is, shall we say, much, much fruitier. The kids of today! But what surprised me the most is that the mum was right there in the room! And all the girls were singing along! Apparently the song isn't even new - it must have totally passed me by, but I don't expect it gets much radio airplay.

And then there were some songs about drugs and murder and other lovely things.

Aibu? I just read the thread about granddad's pride and wept a bit about the world so I thought I'd share this.

Final thought: the girls were taking endless selfie, and were pretty much totally covering their faces in the pictures. Is that a thing now?

Translation: Sweet lady, I am thirsty but aroused, do you have intentions of providing oral sex?

Siha345 · 03/12/2023 00:04

I'ma pop this bottle, you gon' give me brain or nah? 😂😂

I happily sang along to Horny in the car when 7 or 8 and my parents made no attempt to stop me. This Nah song is definitely an odd choice for a birthday party but songs are so explicit now that you can’t get away from it. Genuinely thought you were going to paste the lyrics to WAP

Well you can get away from it by not playing it! The Off button has a purpose.

Hibye23289 · 03/12/2023 00:22

@ChangeNameLikeIChangeSocks 🤣🤣 OP please.listen to Cardi B's WAP song, jesus that's bad and I'm.not a prude. Please report back once you have as I would like to know your reaction 😂

Never forget listening to my 5 year old niece singing and dancing to 'candy shop' 🤦‍♀️ she had no clue what it was about

Bananalanacake · 03/12/2023 00:30

Has anyone noticed there are lots of songs with the F Word in them and no one cares.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 03/12/2023 00:30

I was once on a holiday park and for the children's talent show, a little girl of about 4 or 5 sung and danced to My Humps by Black Eyed Peas.
Most people looked very awkward and embarrassed watching it.

LunaNorth · 03/12/2023 00:33

I saw a five year old singing ‘It’s Not Fair’ by Lily Allen in a talent show at Camp Bestival.

Yes, the song about not getting off and sleeping in the wet patch.

I was agog.

How you can casually compare like a virgin to or nah is incredible

How is it casually comparing? The point is inappropriate songs have been around for years. So many mentioned here from my childhood and they were just songs, as an adult I view them differently.

Fionaville · 03/12/2023 00:56

I remember being about 10 and singing "I touch myself" a lot. I had no idea what it was about!

haribosmarties · 03/12/2023 01:06

Kids don't know.
I used to love Golden Brown as a child...
Genuinely did not cotton on to it being about heroin until I was 30 lmao
Similar 'If You Seek Amy' by Britney spears... I was 35 years old before I finally noticed that one...
Amd obviously 'Bad Touch' which I did pick up on being about sex as a child but having absolutely no frame of reference the lyrics didn't really make any sense to me.... listened to it as an adult and was like 'oh wow ok'

AngeloMysterioso · 03/12/2023 01:09

I remember dancing to Sex On The Beach at my primary school disco when I was 10 years old.

Tessisme · 03/12/2023 01:18

At 12 I was singing:

Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee
Lousy with virginity.
Won't go to bed
Til I'm legally wed
I can't, I'm Sandra Dee.

And other dodgy lyrics from Grease. We all sang them😳 Hadn't a fecking clue what I was singing!

The Divinlys?

I did this spin class the other week at home and she gave two explicit warnings before
Me "how bad can it...ohh"

To clutch my pearls (about a song)
StarlightLady · 03/12/2023 02:20

Songs have always been similar throughout history. Likewise, although not explicit nursery rhymes are often morbid. Throw your pearls out the window and worry about real problems.

StarlightLady · 03/12/2023 02:22

And ask any American what “Downtown” means, it aint about a night out. 🤭

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 03/12/2023 02:24

my dd (16 at the time) had her alarm clock/cd sent to bad touch by the bloodhound gang.
i loved the tune, which was much better than the second song by lil kim how many licks.

EmmaEmerald · 03/12/2023 02:26

I had to look this up and I feel sad that The Weeknd are involved. ☹️

those lyrics are rank. It's not that they're explicit, it's the misogyny. Something like the Bad Touch isn't a valid comparison.

flowerchild2000 · 03/12/2023 02:35

I listened to a lot of really dirty music as a child and I either had no idea what the lyrics meant, or just didn't care. My kids are the same way now. I do mainly play empowered female artists, no matter how dirty or explicit. It's totally fine, it's music, it's fun, no one's life has ever been derailed from it. Your post is hilarious though, I couldn't even vote YABU because it was so funny.

Edited

Have you seen or heard about The Weeknd's show The Idol? Be prepared to be extremely disappointed. Now when I hear his songs I used to love I only hear disgusting creepiness.

catwithflowers · 03/12/2023 03:59

I'm not prone to Mumsnet pearl clutching but have just looked up the lyrics to that song and they are revolting 🤢

Zfactorstar · 03/12/2023 04:03

Songs have been dirty and explicit ever since there has been music. Look up the genra Dirty Blues. The lyrics would make modern rappers blush. It started in the 1920's.

"I don't want anybody else, when I think about you, I touch myself" that one?

QueenMegan · 03/12/2023 08:42

My mums friend took me to Greece when I was very young its utterly inappropriate. Nice girl has to dress and act like a slut to get her man. Did she put up a fight? Loads of underage sex.
Bonnie Taylors song is based on her shagging a school boy. Sex sells.

I don't like all the hoes talk.

Ollifer · 03/12/2023 08:44

Things like 2 become 1 may be about sex but it's not explicit in the way that so many songs are these days, it's really got disgusting with a lot of lyrics and I'm not a prude and am early 30s. A lot of talking about sucking dick, choking, cumming, riding dicks, etc. same with the I'm horny song, yeah it's obviously about sex but it doesn't go into great detail about specific sex acts.
