To never buy Anchor butter again?

I feel well and truly duped and am so annoyed.
They were on ‘special offer’ and cheaper than Tesco standard so I bought a few for Christmas baking.

They looked the same size as the other butters..

But I’ve gone to use one and it’s 200 grams instead of 250 grams..

The weight is well hidden on the back.

Scammers!

I’m NEVER buying Anchor butter again!

You don't check price per kilo as a matter of routine? More fool you.

i always do. And it still annoyed me. The trickery. It’s not a honest transaction. If they increased pack size it’d be plastered all over the pack.

BumblebeeAndPoppy · 01/12/2023 17:48

i spotted this trick with lurpak a while ago at tesco, good price, i thought great. Came closer and thought wtf they look so small and then discovered they’re 200g instead of 250g.
Nope, won’t be bying those. Overall sick and tired of all the supermarket tricks

What equipment would you need?

An electric whisk and some muslin. Just throw cream in bowl and mix till butter forns and separates from fluid. I plunge it in iced water to wash then hang it in muslin to get any excess fluid out.

bakebeans · 01/12/2023 17:49

Same with lurpak! I've also noted that my local Tesco is only selling potatoes in 2kg bags now not 2.5kg. Nutella has gone down from 400g tub to 350 also

Edited

Or you can just shake it in a clean jar. It takes a wee while though...

Lilithlogic · 01/12/2023 17:53

The first time I made butter was out of necessit. I used tinned cream from back of cupboard my mum had given me. Followed internet recipe, I was so chuffed when it worked.

Yes, I made some in a clean mustard jar when I was a child, my nanna put the cream off the milk in the jar to give me something to do. Forgot about that.

As I said in a previous post Yeo Valley yoghurt has shrunk by 20%. And between last week and this it's gone from £1.70 to £2.25. I would have loved some of their blackcurrant but that 's a ridiculous increase.

Lilithlogic · 01/12/2023 18:02

Yoghurt is so easy to make too. Small bio yoghurt for a starter and milk. It makes the creamiest thick luscious yoghurt ever

shams05 · 01/12/2023 18:13

I fell for the same thing. Anchor butter down to £1.60 in Asda around a month ago so bought 4 only to realise when I got home that it's smaller now.

rachellovesdouglas · 01/12/2023 18:13

Since covid and manufacturing saying prices going up for them, they have value engineered everything, and charged more. It boils my urine

Lavenderblue11 · 01/12/2023 18:18

I've just been and checked the Lurpak that was on 'special offer' in my fridge, and yep, I've been conned as well! The tub is 400g, not 500g as the other standard packs are. Thieving bastards.

LindyLou2020 · 01/12/2023 18:21

You may want to have a look at a thread I started on 27/11/23 under the Cost of Living topic, entitled "Shrinkflation", which gives more, similar examples of goods being made smaller, but the price staying the same, or even increasing 🤬
(I don't know how to link threads - too thick! 🤦‍♀️)

I moved frpm lurpack to president quite recently, when i noticed the tiny lurpacks. I actually prefer president. Its all cream, no oil.

I think you must be talking about the spreadable "butter"

And then strain it to make it thick & creamy. Yum. I use UHT milk.

toxic44 · 01/12/2023 18:29

This isn't a new trick. I recall my parents complaining that cigarettes were thinner, shorter and still the same price per packet.
I started making my own butter when the price shot up. 600ml double cream yields 300g butter. It's not significantly cheaper but it's not pumped full of air and water either.

Mumteedum · 01/12/2023 18:30

MyCatIsPlotting · 30/11/2023 20:19

Yes! I am boycotting Lurpak for the same reason. I knew butter had come down in price but I ordered some online, and only realised when unpacking it all. Felt so much lighter. Getting sick of being taken for a mug, do they think we won’t notice?!

I am a mug and did not notice! I did wonder why anchor is always cheaper these days.

SaintJuliette · 01/12/2023 18:35

YABU - becuse all the other butter manufactures will have done the same within a few months; mark my words!

Georgyporky · 01/12/2023 18:39

My favourite bacon looks the same size in the packet, but it's now 6 rashers instead of 8.
I know I've got to pay more, but I despise the sneakiness.

cakeorwine · 01/12/2023 18:53

This thread is an example of why maths is important and understanding what unit price actually means - and being able to work it out.

The unit price is there if you look for it - but they can make that hard to compare between different goods.

Yes I do too. Also made ricotta not long ago. I used to do yoghurt in a flask, but now I use the yoghurt function on my instant pot.

SkySecret · 01/12/2023 19:17

Always check the price per kg….. on everything!

Middleagedspreadisreal · 01/12/2023 19:34

Look at the ingredients when buying butter

Rummikub · 01/12/2023 19:36

I have always read ingredients as dd allergic to some things. And with new products or offers check the price per kg. But if it’s a product I buy every week then I’d probably just grab it without checking. As i think many would.

Deathwillbebutapause thankyou! I thought it was from NZ originally but was reading their website recently for nutritional info and only saw references to English cows and was so confused. I thought I had imagined the NZ connection my whole life or had confused Anchor with another Butter brand starting with A!😅

KimberleyClarke - Thanks for the suggestion of Shirgar. Is the butter inside as yellow as the packet? I crave yellow butter- For me white butter is literally a pale imitation. 🙂

Yes it is. Can usually get it in Tesco or the Coop where I live.
