To never buy Anchor butter again?

I feel well and truly duped and am so annoyed.
They were on ‘special offer’ and cheaper than Tesco standard so I bought a few for Christmas baking.

They looked the same size as the other butters..

But I’ve gone to use one and it’s 200 grams instead of 250 grams..

The weight is well hidden on the back.

Scammers!

I’m NEVER buying Anchor butter again!

butter is one of the things that should come in standard sizes.
what the heck will we do if we come across grans recipe asking for half a block of butter?

Gran likely cooked in ounces, so you’re truly f*#&ked.

KimberleyClark · 01/12/2023 08:20

Shir Gar butter, award winning Welsh butter, is still 250g.

Why aren't weights & dates always on the front or top of things?

boudiccathecat · 01/12/2023 08:52

I get my groceries delivered so nothing to compare pack size with. As I use butter for baking the pack size is annoying. I’d rather buy 250g butter packs

Because they're trying to hide the weight I suppose. It has become very difficult to find, I had to help son with a homework exercise listing the weights and country of origin on stuff from our kitchen and it was tricky to find a lot of them.

Shopping used to be enjoyable, now it's like a battle where you have to be vigilant to not be taken for a fool, not to mention the cost even if you haven't been caught out. I miss pre-pandemic shopping tbh, used to go with a friend and sometimes get a coffee. Seems like a different lifetime now.

Deathwillbebutapause · 01/12/2023 09:21

Meh, Anchor Butter was never as good once it ceased to be "made in New Zealand."

AInightingale · 01/12/2023 09:24

There are very few bargains to be had, even the reduced to clear stuff is usually only discounted by a third. Maybe more produce is being diverted to foodbanks which is fair enough. It used to be possible to go in the evening and get freezable stuff, bread, vegetarian stuff, reduced to about 30p.

Rummikub · 01/12/2023 11:37

Cake or wine

So they have the same pack size but it costs more....

Which is better?

I think a bit of honesty that’s all. Say they’ve reduced the pack size to keep the product affordable if that’s the case.

But in reality I believe it’s just profiteering and tricking consumers.

That statement from the British Retail Consortium is extremely dismissive of the needs of blind and partially-sighted people and those with learning difficulties.

I'm sure they don't care, mind.

Ah, I'd been looking for that for decades - it just suddenly seemed to disappear.

Also making sure your fruit and veg won't immediately go off

'Add more butter' is always the correct answer.

chiwowowa · 01/12/2023 16:22

Deathwillbebutapause thankyou! I thought it was from NZ originally but was reading their website recently for nutritional info and only saw references to English cows and was so confused. I thought I had imagined the NZ connection my whole life or had confused Anchor with another Butter brand starting with A!😅

KimberleyClarke - Thanks for the suggestion of Shirgar. Is the butter inside as yellow as the packet? I crave yellow butter- For me white butter is literally a pale imitation. 🙂

DahliaMacNamara · 01/12/2023 16:58

Anchor came from New Zealand until relatively recently. Okay, my 'relatively recently' can embrace anything from about 1992 onwards, so I can't be too precise. I tried it once during a butter shortage, or at least a shortage of cheap butter, and it didn't taste the way I remembered.

Being (more than) old enough to be a granny, I'm happy to tell you that a standard block of butter used to be half a pound in weight, ie 8 ounces, which is 227g or thereabouts!

Eiris · 01/12/2023 17:06

It is deliberate deceit.
How long did they think it would take for customers to notice?

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 01/12/2023 17:08

This has happened to the small tub of spreadable Anchor too. I complained about it - not that it did much good. It's frustrating that more and more businesses think it's OK to give us less and yet charge us the same. They must think we're gullible fools.
At the moment, the large spreadable tub is the same size, but I'm sure they'll find a way of decreasing that soon enough.

48wheaties · 01/12/2023 17:09

I've just bought Yeo Valley. They've done the same thing 200g grrr!

sueelleker · 01/12/2023 17:28

Lurpak spreadable has done the same; their 500g tubs are now 400g.

Circularargument · 01/12/2023 17:38

You don't check price per kilo as a matter of routine? More fool you.

Lilithlogic · 01/12/2023 17:39

Kerrygold is still 250g and quite often on offer for £2

Lilithlogic · 01/12/2023 17:41

And you could also weigh up the odds and buy cream to make your own, so easy and you also end up with buttermilk to use.

What equipment would you need?
