Boyfriend vaping around kids

kate1996 · 30/11/2023 18:59

So me and my boyfriend have a 18 month old and a 8 week old. Boyfriend vapes. I know people think these vapes are great bla bla but the science isn't settled and there's been evidence that these things can I fact be really harmful to you and those who breath them in. Well I've never smoked, vaped or anything and I'm really fussy when it comes to that sort of stuff around the kids. Well my fella keeps vaping around them even though he knows I hate it and am against it. He just completely ignores me and our whole living room ends up smelling like it and I worry about the kids breathing it in especially our new baby. He don't seem to think there's a problem. I don't mind him doing it elsewear or out the window but just feel like weather he thinks it's fine or not I'm their mother and my views and concerns should matter. I feel like throwing the damn think in the bin, but know that's childish haha.

Is he exhaling in their face?

I really don't think second hand vape is a thing. I mean yeah, don't vape yourself. But he's not exhaling carginogens into the air.

10HailMarys · 30/11/2023 19:06

He shouldn’t be vaping around children in the house. The steam from a vape is not as bad as smoke, but it’s still a strong-smelling vapour that contains nicotine and chemicals and it can also cause damp and mould when it condenses on walls and ceilings.

He is a selfish arsehole with zero consideration for his kids.

It contains nicotine, so while not like filling a room with tarry smoke, vape is still not something you want a couple of babies to be inhaling.

It's not steam. And I think it's vanishingly unlikely you'll get damp or mould. Your kettle does produce steam. Have you got mould in your kitchen from that?

Then don't give a baby a blowback from one.

Wow. Some deeply flippant shit replies on this thread. We don't know at all that second hand vape is 'not a thing', there's no evidence. That would really bother me too OP, it's not a little bit if the whole room is stinking.

Birch101 · 30/11/2023 19:18

Would annoy me and countries/states have banned vaping in cars with children so the logic applies for indoors as well.

Maybe discuss this with your health visitor/ smoking cessetation support

My brother’s room at my mother’s house has a large patch of mould directly above the spot where he vapes, and the same happened with my friend’s vaping lodger. So if you’re vaping a lot in a small room, then yes, it can absolutely happen.

And, as I said, the vapour still contains nicotine. And because vape is very poorly regulated, it’s often unclear how much. Or what else it contains.

He could vape anywhere. He doesn’t have to do it around his kids. It’s also not great to normalise that by doing it in front of them, either. Plus the OP finds it gross too.

I don’t know anyone who sits there vaping with their kids in the room. They all go outside.

Your kettle does produce steam. Have you got mould in your kitchen from that?

No, because I have a large and airy kitchen and I don’t leave the kettle constantly puffing out steam throughout the day. But I do have mould in the bathroom from the steam, and in my bedroom from condensation just from breathing.

There’s evidence that nonsmokers exposed to secondhand vape aerosol absorb similar levels of nicotine as people exposed to secondhand cigarette smoke.
Along with nicotine, nonvapers are also exposed to ultrafine particles from secondhand vape aerosol, which may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Secondhand vape aerosol also contains several known carcinogens that may increase the risk of certain cancers.
These carcinogens include:

  • lead
  • formaldehyde
  • toluene

It’s clearly not as bad as cigarettes, but not harmless, especially in enclosed spaces.

Secondhand Vape Exposure: Effects, Who's at Risk, and More

Secondhand vaping might not seem like a big deal, but it can pose health risks to those around you.

Or alternatively, just don’t be a selfish grubby old skank who vapes around an eight week old baby and makes the room stink.

DuploTrain · 30/11/2023 19:25

If you can smell it, you’re inhaling it. And so is the baby and child. No, I wouldn’t be happy for them to breathe it in.

He should be doing it outside.

CaptainJ · 30/11/2023 19:25

"I'm their mother and my views and concerns should matter."

Not only matter - paramount.

slipperypenguin · 30/11/2023 19:27

"I'm really fussy when it comes to that sort of stuff around the kids".... yet your living room is filled with smoke that your 2 DC are inhaling? Okay then

Not negotiable for me

Well they used to say that second hand smoking wasn't a thing.

Taking water vapour spiked with various chemicals can't be good for you and almost certainly won't be good for young lungs.

The truth is that they don't know what harm it does yet. I would totally agree it's nowhere near as bad a smoking but why would anyone take that risk around young children? Not as bad as something else doesn't mean not it's not bad.

LittleRedDots · 30/11/2023 19:32

I didn't even wear perfume around my son when he was a baby, let alone vape in the same room as him (or at all!). If a friend came round my house and started vaping inside I'd ask them not to.

beetr00 · 30/11/2023 19:43

@kate1996 you are absolutely right to be concerned. Many resources online.

Exactly! I remember a lady took her baby to a nail salon. I wouldn't even paint ny nails or use nail varnish remover just incase.

I agree not as bad as smoke and wouldn't care myself but an 8 week old come on only a selfish dick does that.

AllAboutMargot · 30/11/2023 19:50

He's a selfish prick. If he won't stop, I'd leave.

Hmm... the two sources @beetr00 and @Notmyfirstusername quote aren't quite as robust as they first appear and wouldn't be accepted in a peer review.

The What to Expect one references itself, then a site which is an exploratory study without conclusions.

The other Healthline one references a study into perceptions of harm in the US.

If it were me I'd ask him to always go away from the children so that they don't see the example as much as anything, but also because it matters to you and that should be enough.

If he won't then you've got more of a relationship than vaping problem.😟

Yeah this, it's so selfish.
Also it's just moronic that a man with two small children is so attached to a little piece of stinking plastic that he can't stop sucking on.. can't stand them. Vapes are just as gross as cigarettes.

CornTheCob · 30/11/2023 20:06

I would have gone berserk if anyone had smoked or vaped in my home, whether the kids are babies or not.
An adult has a choice, a baby doesn't, so I'll make that choice for them.
Take your stinking cigs and air freshener dummies outside.

TomatoSandwiches · 30/11/2023 20:10

I'd not have him around me or the children if he was doing that inside the house.
Why did you have two children with him if he has no respect for you or your opinion?

Fearful84 · 30/11/2023 20:10

Well that escalated quickly …
