I've had my tonsils out but have had tonsillitis since and think I have it again but not sure, just want to hear opinions before I see a doctor.
Feeling really rough today with an awful sore throat, looked at my throat after work and I've got these bumps. I know that tonsillitis is usually white bumps but could this be early stages? Pic below

That doesn't look like the tonsillitis my daughter has had but she has her tonsils still.
sorry for the revolting photo, this is her last bout.

I don't think it's tonsillitis either sorry

bananabug · 30/11/2023 16:36

No, that's a reaction to a virus. Normally includes a tickly dry cough too.

Thanks all! Phew

If you've had your tonsils out, you cannot get tonsillitis. Tonsillitis is literally 'inflammation of the tonsils'. Something that isn't there can't get inflamed.

You can, however, get infections in the rest of your throat caused by the same germs - like viruses or streptococcus bacteria. I think the really hideous, agonising, whole-neck-feels-swollen, massive white patches kind of tonsillitis is usually caused by streptococcus, which can also affect the rest of your throat - but in your picture that looks a lot more like a painful sore throat caused by a virus (cold, flu, Covid etc).

It's not entirely impossible that it's the every early stage of strep throat, but I don't think a doctor would be able to confirm it by looking at your throat. I sympathise with you if you've had to endure a lot of tonsillitis and throat infections because I used to be really prone to them when I was younger and I know how horrible it is! However, my throat now always comes up in bumps like that whenever I get a cold or something fluey, too - it's usually the first symptom of a nasty cold for me.
