The calculator specification costs £45, but there is a similar looking one for £11 (on Amazon) AIBU to buy the cheaper one? I really can't afford £45 right now. Should it be able to do most of what she needs. She is in Y7.

its just a scientific calculator. Get one from tesco ~ £11

Pottedpalm · 30/11/2023 13:40

A mistake surely? Get one suitable for GCSE from a supermarket. ( maths teacher)

PippyLongTits · 30/11/2023 13:42

Get the one you can afford. It'll still add up the same numbers.

MothBat · 30/11/2023 13:46

Casio fx-83 or 85 GTCW fine up to GCSE. Shop around but get the latest model. Fx-991 for A level but even that is only £36 at full price.

UndertheCedartree · 30/11/2023 17:42

Thank you, all. That's a relief!

This was the one specified: fx-85gtx classwiz

I'd check with the school. Ours prefers certain brand so teachers know how to show functions etc. But they reccomned one that's £12

dootball · 30/11/2023 17:45

That calculator isn't made any more it's been replaced with a newer model (which isn't as good!)
But should be around £15.

Would this one do

BabyofMine · 30/11/2023 18:07

I wonder if the teacher had the standard easy to get model recommended and hasn’t realised there is a newer model thats overtaken it. I think that one is only expensive because it’s not made anymore.

That's a good find, thank you.

Ah, maybe this is it.

Yeah, the old classwiz has been discontinued, the one replacing it is the fx-83GT Classwiz

The new one is shite and I hate it so if you can get the discontinued one cheaply, definitely go for that one!

ZenNudist · 30/11/2023 20:43

Just had to buy a new one for ds as he lost his . The recommended fx-85gtx was discontinued so I bought the replacement model rather than a very pricey discontinued one.

Baircasolly · 30/11/2023 20:45

The newer model is absolutely hideous - I don't understand why Casio have done this to us. But I still wouldn't bother getting the older (better) one, because it will make it even harder to switch to the new (shit) one when the other one inevitably gets lost/broken/runs out of battery etc.

BabyofMine · 01/12/2023 19:04

What’s wrong with the new model out of curiosity??

noblegiraffe · 01/12/2023 20:41

They have moved all the buttons so they're in the wrong place (like the ANS button and the pi button) and hidden some really regularly used functions in stupid menus.

Like if you want to change a fraction to a decimal, on the old model you just pressed the S<=>D button, now you have to hit 'format' then down arrow to select decimal and then EXE. And that's a function that gets used loads. Utter pain in the arse.
