Why are my radiators not working!

Have bled them all, all fine no air pockets, have reset the boiler. Had a new boiler fitted 2 years ago but no problems since then. They’ve just suddenly decided to not get hot. Really really don’t want to fork out for a gas engineer this close to Christmas - is there anything I can do?

Give the towel radiator valve a bit of a tap

4naansjeremy · 30/11/2023 10:32

First I want you to press the reset which is the middle button to the left of the boiler display. Then could you post another picture of the display once that is done?

I love a live fixing thread!

Reset button isn’t doing anything, even if I long press

Pressure looks low OP. There should be a little valve you can open under the pressure dial - pull it slowly and you’ll see the pressure go up. If this doesn’t work it could be you need a new pump. I hope it’s easily accessible - ours was under the bathroom floor(!)

Could be that your pump isn't working properly? That would explain why 2 - possibly near the start of the system- are working

This.

are the cold rads in one area of the house? Eg all downstairs or all upstairs? Are the radiator valves the same on each radiator? I know it’s a pain but a picture of one of the cold rads might be useful

Ostryga · 30/11/2023 10:49

Both upstairs and downstairs. This is the closest radiator to the boiler that is cold.

The valve on the left of the picture is turned off. Turn the chrome top of that valve with the same motion you would open a traditional tap or open a bottle of milk.

4naansjeremy · 30/11/2023 10:52

Anti clockwise if looking down from above

Ostryga · 30/11/2023 10:55

It’s on 6, just not a very clear photo.

4naansjeremy · 30/11/2023 10:58

The other thing I noticed from the photo is that the valve on the right is much newer than the trv on the right. Were they replaced since you last used the heating?

4naansjeremy · 30/11/2023 10:59

If possible can you also remove the trv head from the valve on the left?

Are any of the pipes that connect to the radiators hot? ie before the thermostatic valves?

Ostryga · 30/11/2023 10:59

No, had new radiators put it with boiler, but nothing changed since then and heating been fine up until now. Or in March when last on.

They are on the boiler, but none on radiators apart from the 2 that work

OP posts:
4naansjeremy · 30/11/2023 11:00

Has the boiler been serviced since March?

Ostryga · 30/11/2023 11:01

No it’s due a service in January with the gas check

It sounds like your heating valve is not engaging if all the heating is inop, this is very common. It is normally the synchro motor that fails, so you don't need to have the pipes disconnecting to change it, just two screws and a cable. Probably about £60 for an honest engineer to to sort.

SuperBored · 30/11/2023 11:03

On the ones that work, can you feel that the outgoing pipe (ones that don't have thermostatic valves on) are also hot? Do you just have one heating circuit and do you know the order of radiators on the circuit?

Last thing to try before I have to leave the thread for a while for meetings. Go back to the boiler and press and hold the button above and below the reset button for five seconds

this will cause the boiler to run at maximum rate in heating mode for 20 minutes. The display will say max.

leave that to run and see if you get any heat at the cold rads.

Have done that. Thanks so so much for all your help so far!
