I wfh - How to cheaply stay warm this winter?

I work from home. With the energy price so high, and cost of living going up rapidly, how can I cheaply stay warm during the day? Ideally, I don’t want to use central heating until 4pm. It’s already costing a bomb to keep the house heated between 4pm and 8pm (when kids are at home).

Im wearing a jumper, but can’t layer up more as I have to attend meetings on zoom.

A collegue I work with uses a hot water bottle to keep warm.

DefaultLTB · 29/11/2023 22:02

I find it’s my feet that feel the cold most, so I rest them on a hot water bottle. Seems to stay warm for ages!

beanontoast · 29/11/2023 22:02

Heated blankets are one of the cheapest ways to get warm, you have the outlay of course but incredibly cheap to run

Ace56 · 29/11/2023 22:02

Hot water bottles, keep doors closed, thermal vest/things to wear under your jumper, wear an oodie when you’re not in a meeting, have a blanket…
I also wfh and am finding it ok at the moment (heating comes on at 5) - am in London though so might be different if you’re up north!

Electric blanket
Hot water bottle & stick one in the bed 30 mins before you go up
Plenty of tea/warm water with honey

BeadedBubbles · 29/11/2023 22:03

Heated throw. They're meant to be quite cheap to run.

Whataretheodds · 29/11/2023 22:03

You can layer up underneath - thermal long sleeve top under shirt under jumper
And warm clothes below -double socks and soled slippers.
Stand while working? Walking pad? If sittint down, blanket (heated?)
Hot drinks. Work in the room that's naturally warmest.

Dubbledup · 29/11/2023 22:04

I wear wrist warmers, thermals and a jumper or two, try to stay with black or navy as they look better on video calls. Then waist down I have a heated throw over joggers, big thick socks and slippers.

Merryshitmass · 29/11/2023 22:04

Electric blanket. Makes me forget the room im in is cold as long as I stay under it

KMM87 · 29/11/2023 22:04

Put more layers on underneath. They won't know how many layers you have on under your jumper.
When not in meetings I have my dressing gown on and then take it off for calls 😄
When in meetings I have a blanket on my lap and big fluffy socks 🧦 and usually a cup of tea to warm hands

PurBal · 29/11/2023 22:05

Heated blanket here too.

existentialpain · 29/11/2023 22:05

Put your feet on a hot water bottle, it warms up your whole body. And lots of hot hot drinks. Keep doors shut.

mrsfollowill · 29/11/2023 22:05

Thermal layer under your jumper, thick socks and slippers and heated throw wrapped around you- slip it down under the desk so it's just on your bottom half when on zoom.
Do you have any chance of going into an office to work a couple of days? We have nowhere near enough desks at my office but if anyone moans about heating/cost of WFH they are told to go the office. Which very few do. So if you really need a desk there generally is one available.
I've saved loads of money with no commute- literally £200-£300 a month so I pay for the extra heating in Winter (go to office 2 x a month)

FaryNuff · 29/11/2023 22:06

I bought a couple of pairs of fleece lined leggings from Next, they’re a game changer!

handskneesandbumpsadaisy · 29/11/2023 22:06

I just bought a cosihome heated throw on a Black Friday deal. It's brilliant, although I do now have to fight the kids and the cat for it. Costs around 4p an hour to run.

Also if you can have something warm for lunch and try to go for a brisk walk in the afternoon. Potentially also consider taking your laptop and working in your local library for a few hours.

Gherkingreen · 29/11/2023 22:07

I wear thermal socks and sheepskin boot slippers from Sheepland (recommended on here a few years ago - they're amazing, have lasted so well and super warm/comfy). I layer up with heat tech long sleeved top and a warm jumper.
If it's v cold like it is now, in the afternoons I put a fleece blanket over my lower half. I drink a lot of hot drinks and sometimes fill a hot water bottle if it's really cold. I walk my dog before, during lunch after work which helps keep warm. And soup/something warm on toast for lunch.

All2Well · 29/11/2023 22:07

I have a really thick long padded gilet that's pretty much like a duvet that I throw on and off in between meetings when wfh.

Those fur lined thick leggings and M&S heatgen thermal tops under whatever you have on top. Thermal heat holder socks and gloves. Lots of hot drinks,
soups or stews for lunch etc.

clarkkentsglasses · 29/11/2023 22:07

I wear huge layers and hoodie until I have a meeting, then it all comes off and a smart scarf for my zooms

Believeitornot · 29/11/2023 22:07

When I wfh, I don’t care about layering up for online meetings. They can see I’m home and get it.

I have a small oil filled radiator and have it under my desk and will have it on for an hour or so. I have wool blankets for my legs, slippers and hot water bottles throughout the day. Plus I get up as much as possible. Sitting still is what makes me cold.

Im in the same situation, I’ve been looking at getting a battery heated Gillet. Can wear it for meetings and it would keep me toasty during the day!

CCSS15 · 29/11/2023 22:08

2 heated blankets! One to sit on and one over you - lovely and toasty

InterestQ · 29/11/2023 22:08

Heated blanket (pennies to run, really actual pennies) - with wool socks not cotton. Sheepskin slippers (not synthetic) - TKMAXX are the cheapest real ones, then an insulated mug with a lid for your tea and coffee so if you go back to it after a cc it’s still hot and you don’t have to unwrap yourself from your blanket to heat it up again.

scarf or poloneck as final tip. So crucial.

HappyMavis · 29/11/2023 22:09

"can’t layer up more as I have to attend meetings on zoom."

But why not? Ok, wearing an outdoor coat/hat/gloves would look a bit silly but a thermal layer/layers and an extra jumper - what's wrong with that whilst on a call??

I’ve been known to sit in Teams meetings with a beanie on 🤷🏻‍♀️
