I wfh - How to cheaply stay warm this winter?

I work from home. With the energy price so high, and cost of living going up rapidly, how can I cheaply stay warm during the day? Ideally, I don’t want to use central heating until 4pm. It’s already costing a bomb to keep the house heated between 4pm and 8pm (when kids are at home).

Im wearing a jumper, but can’t layer up more as I have to attend meetings on zoom.

I have a big blanket that I wrap
Around me like a skirt, double socks including some thick fluffy ones and if I get really cold fingerless gloves too.

Barleycat · 30/11/2023 06:19

My colleagues and I are often be seen in meetings wearing oodies, hoods up and fingerless gloves!

Thermal underwear top to bottom.
Couple of wool layers on top of that.
Folded blanket and hot water bottle on my lap.

Unescorted · 30/11/2023 06:26

Hot water bottle in a sleeping bag pulled up to just out of shot.

A selection of silk scarves... They make me look as if I am channeling my inner air hostess/ bank teller but I don't care.

Marino base layers

I’m the same. I wear thermals under work clothes and Ugg boots. I also have a heated throw under my desk that I keep over my lap on calls - that makes the biggest difference.

It does get to the stage when heating is needed. I turn off all the radiators in the other rooms and just heat my office.

sashh · 30/11/2023 06:30

Heated throw.

I think they are supposed to be 2p an hour to run, I've just had my latest bill and this month I have spent under £6 this month.

I have the computer on, TV and electric oven daily so I'm not skimping.

DsTTy · 30/11/2023 06:30

MnS fleece thermal leggings and top, wool jumper (needs to be real wool, not synthetic), socks, then slipper sock on top and I’m toasty all day

EveWinter · 30/11/2023 06:31

I heat my office with an oil filled radiator rather than heating the whole house during the day. I need the air to be warm otherwise my asthma would be triggered.

I wear warmer clothes at home, so walking leggings with a brushed inside with a shirt and sweater over the top, thick socks. That way I still look ok on teams. I’ve never seen anyone in an oodie/beanie and would think that would be seen as a bit odd in my work sphere.

TheFeistyFeminist · 30/11/2023 06:33

Put the bottom half of you in a sleeping bag. Put a hot water bottle in the sleeping bag. Warming less air around you, insulating your feet from the floor etc. Worked for me at uni.

Professionalmess · 30/11/2023 06:36

Check your local library. Mine has meeting pods. So you could stay warm there and book the equivalent (often for free) when needed.

ManyATrueWord · 30/11/2023 06:39

Base layers do it for me. Then more layers. Therm.undies.may not be sexy but by goodness! They work.

Work in the smallest room and keep the door shut and use a portable heater. Oil filled radiator s are the business.

Expedition weight merino wool. Its expensive but worth it

Marshtit · 30/11/2023 07:06

you can layer up of course
and go outside, coming back in makes you warmer

AHeadForHeights · 30/11/2023 07:24

Fluffy lined joggers, a thermal base layer, thick socks over thin ones, slippers, and everything tucked into each other so you've got no exposed skin when you move. A fluffy lined neck warmer (there is a named for it but I have forgotten it). Hot drinks and food.

socks1107 · 30/11/2023 07:36

I wear layers, thick socks and electric blanket. Keeps me very toastie

gannett · 30/11/2023 07:44

A home workout in the middle of the day warms you up. As does a quick hot shower (the opposite of heatwave season when I have multiple cold showers per day).

Tbh it's my cold hands that I've never been able to solve while WFH. I can wrap up all the other bits of me to the necessary extent (a hoodie in a meeting would not be frowned on at all at my company) but my hands go cold very quickly and yet I can't cover them on account of having to use them to type.

SpongeBob2022 · 30/11/2023 07:54

I hate being cold and would sacrifice a whole lot of things before heating so if I'm cold it goes on (to give context). But I got a heated throw last week and I genuinely haven't needed the heating on while working since. I just sit with it on my lap and around my back.

ETA to be fair I do live in the south so it's never so cold that I need gloves inside.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/11/2023 07:58

It all about the electric blankets here!

A colleague recommended a heated gillet yesterday

Mischance · 30/11/2023 08:49

Fleece bedding ... sheets, pillow cases, duvet cover ... all fleece.

DisforDarkChocolate · 30/11/2023 08:56

My heated throw is fabulous. Keeping your feet warm is supposed to be very effective too (tip from someone who has worked from home a long time and feels the cold). I'm going to try some wrist warmers from a local shop this year.

Don't worry about what you look like. I've seen people in dressing gowns and hats this week, same as last year.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 30/11/2023 09:33

Heated throws are great.

Genuinely don't understand this competitive austerity. If you are working from home then you are presumably saving money on travel costs, lunches, pet/child associated costs etc etc and if you aren't then this should be factored into your salary/expenses.

Just put the fucking heating on - if you were working in an office would you play these ridiculous games of wearing three layers and using shivering as a competitive concept? No, you'd demand appropriate heating to enable you to do your job.

No DC or pet costs, lunches the same and my drive to work is about 5 miles so I don't save anything
I would put the heating on more if I could afford to but min wage isn't stretching like it used to when I live alone

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/11/2023 09:40

Heated hoodies on sale on Amazon atm for £20.

Orangeandgold · 30/11/2023 09:44

Get some heat tech. And try all the above.

also if you have a cosy wool/cashmere jumper or blanket it keeps the heat in very well.
