To wish my cleaner would stop with the reminders?

I have a cleaner who cleans my flat on a fortnightly basis. Usually I'm at work when she comes, but we've always got on really well on the occasions I've caught her. I'm really considerate and always have my place tidy and ready for her to clean. I'm always flexible and genuinely really appreciate her.
One thing I've genuinely never let her down with is payment. The money will always be transferred on the evening of the day she has come. I've never let her down on this, not once.
Today I bumped into her as she was leaving my place and I was getting home from work. Two hours later, when I was in the middle of making the kids' dinner, there was a message from her asking me to pay. I don't think there's any need for this, when I'm trustworthy and reliable every single time.
I don't set up a standing order because I'd rather just pay on the day she comes. This keeps me right in case she ever has to change day.

Thinkntjis is about your cleaner not you. How secure are her circumstances? Has something just shifted for her? ask her, talk to her about it.

Gingernan · 29/11/2023 19:11

My partners clients leave the money out for him. He does get anxious if they don't and does have to remind them sometimes, which he finds a bit embarrassing.
It does sound like op is a good client though.

SoSad44 · 28/11/2023 20:42

She did the job, you owe her the money. She did nothing wrong, if anything you should have paid her by the time she left.

I know what you're saying but most people work a whole month before being paid for two of those weeks (two in advance, two in lieu) so depends if there's a contract etc I guess

nappysan · 29/11/2023 19:39

Leave cash in an envelope each and every time. It’s polite and you would like it if someone respected your work and paid for it nicely 😊

MyopicBunny · 29/11/2023 19:40

Why can't you give her cash when she's finished? It's a bit unfair to leave her waiting and not knowing when you'll decide to transfer the money. Maybe she has to order her weekly shop for all you know?

NeedToChangeName · 29/11/2023 19:44

I pay our cleaner by standing order. She rarely changes the day, and I'm content to pay when she's sick or on holiday. Far mire convenient this way

MyopicBunny · 29/11/2023 19:46

The thing is, whichever way you look at it, you can either put up with her reminding you or finding another cleaner and if you're happy with her work then maybe just ignore the reminders.

Samlewis96 · 29/11/2023 19:56

Hmm what other jobs in life are you paid the minute you finish or even in advance? Most people work at week or month in hand. Why is it the norm to pay cleaners in advance / same day?

wesurecouldstandgladioli · 29/11/2023 19:57

JMSA · 28/11/2023 22:39

I didn't intend to Smile

Just pay her. Don't be a late payer.

kneehightoacat · 29/11/2023 20:09

Transfer in the morning BEFORE she comes. Not after

or leave cash

Thats just polite

What about your hairdresser? Do you say thanks love, nice job I’ll pay in a day or 2? Sorry, I think it’s really bad manners to make people wait.

But you are obviously physically there when the hairdresser Is doing your hair lol

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 29/11/2023 20:22

I would pay with a standing order to ease your cleaners life.

stayathomer · 29/11/2023 20:22

Maybe it’s her way of seeing who’s paid? As in she goes the messages she sends afterwards? So it’s like a physical list?

I had my boiler serviced the other day, I haven’t paid for it yet as you get 14 days to pay. Lots of things you don’t pay for immediately. Like I say I AM that cleaner (well not THAT cleaner but you know) and I don’t chase my clients, I know they’ll pay me, and I understand that people are busy, might not sit down until that evening, or have a chance to do it for a day or two. I think it would be rude to send them reminders before at least a couple of days.

That's ridiculous. If you have your nails done, do you pay a month later?? No, because you're likely to have them done more than once a month!

MyopicBunny · 29/11/2023 20:27

Which is the case for the cleaner in the OP who cleans fortnightly

Cleaning is akin to your other personal services (hairdresser, nail tech, aesthetics etc). Its the norm to pay for personal services there and then/on completion. A good, reliable cleaner (such as the OP's) isn't easy to find.

This is not really about you. It's about her. She might be living on the breadline and so she can't afford (literally) to give people the benefit of the doubt.

This. She's probably quite anxious about it .

Ap42 · 29/11/2023 20:38

My dear Mum was a cleaner, she absolutely relied on that money and was always paid immediately after she finished. Could you not just leave her the cash?

Duckling89 · 29/11/2023 20:44

I always get the same message from my window cleaner and I pay straightaway, I think it’s automated. Are you sure she doesn’t send it to everyone?

wesurecouldstandgladioli · 29/11/2023 20:49

JMSA · 28/11/2023 22:39

Unless she sends all her messages with kisses and clients' names, I can guarantee it's not automated. Stop being presumptuous.

You can't guarantee it's not automated. It's very easy to send automatic texts and upload the relevant contacts and programme them so that it enters an individual's name in the text message.

Why do you think you're the only one to get kisses from her?

Get with the times.

mathanxiety · 29/11/2023 20:53

You'd be surprised how many people stiff their cleaners. You might also be surprised how thick a skin it takes to remind someone who owes you money for a service rendered that they need to pay you, especially if you get some business through referrals or rely on good references.

Set up a standing order and ask that she gives you 24 hours notice of a no show so you can suspend it.

Beenalongwinter · 29/11/2023 20:54

I pay the window cleaner online as soon as he arrives and the cleaner just before she finishes.

mathanxiety · 29/11/2023 20:56

Pixieproblems · 28/11/2023 21:36

Surely the same day is fine whether it’s one minute after finishing or a few hours later as long as it’s the same day !

Depends how long the transfer takes to clear the bank. Banks have a cut off time for transfers and deposits.

If she works on the last day of the month and her rent is due on the first, then the speed at which the money arrives in her bank is important.

For rent read also 'all other bills'.
