Dog people

Well prepared for some abuse here, as I know people can feel strongly on the subject.

I'll start this by saying I love dogs AND cats, my family has both and I've grown up with both.

But why do so many people hate cats, specifically those that call themselves dog people?

Why is it necessary to hate cats just because you like dogs? It's not like you have to choose. No one is forcing you to own one.

And why when you say you've got a cat do so many people feel it necessary to tell you they hate them. I've not really come across the same hatred towards dogs from 'cat people'.

I have never come across this! The only people I know that dislike cats is because they shit in their gardens.

I used to dislike cats until my friends cats got pregnant and ended up with 2 kitties. They're the best and definitely more cat person than dog now

I have never come across this either. I am a 'dog person ' but have also had cats.

I don't hate cats (I have a dog), but I am severely allergic to them. Even being around someone who has been around a cat will set me off.

I hate cats because they are dirty gits who bury their shit in my garden kill birds they don't even eat and leave the carcasses all over and scrap with their mates on my drive at night oh and they spray up my car radiator so my car stinks of cat piss when I put the heater on

I find there's more 'cat people' that hate dogs than vice versa. The only person I know that hates cats is my dad as he is severely allergic, but hates his reaction to cats rather than cats themselves. (We have both)

I love cats and dogs, recently had both until an unfortunate incident with my cat and a car, they lived in harmony together!

However, said cat RUINED my house! My sofa, carpets, dining chairs, despite 5/6 scratching posts! I absolutely loved her companionship but will never have another!

I’m a dog person but we have a cat too, grew up with cats, I just prefer dogs.

I’m a dog person but have also had cats in the past. Not overly keen on humans though.

I have a dog and whilst I don’t like cats I don’t hate them.

I do find the hypocrisy about effects on other animals annoying though. My dog hasn’t a hope of catching a squirrel but chases them. I’d get abuse about that while it’s fine for cats to kill wildlife.

Theres definitely a lot more dog hate on here.

It’s seemingly more frowned upon to hate dogs than it is to hate cats. People seem to a bit over sensitive when it comes to hating dogs.

It's like a competition for some people. Cats v dogs.

A lot of anti cat people I know (I work in a rural school) are farmers and tend to be boys. Like vehemently and unpleasant. Not scientific but just my observation .

I am quite allergic to cats so have never developed warm feelings towards them. They look lovely though and I can see why people have them as pets. I have become a dog person by default.

I love cats and dogs but have always had cats. I agree with you. People are so weird about their cat hatred. Worse are people who obviously hate cats but pretend they’re allergic.

I’m a cat person and if I didn’t have cats I’d hate them- they are predators that only care about themselves!!! I also have a dog and he would die for you with his tail wagging as he went down😅 I see dog and cat hate everywhere, dogs nowadays are meant to be robots (tbf I see the same with kids!)

I admit I do not like cats, especially the ones that come into my garden and use it as a toilet! I have also been bitten by a cat for no reason other than I walked passed it.
I am a dog lover, and have always had dogs since a small child, so that probably also sways the way I feel about them.
If a cat needed help though, for example being hit by a car then of course I would help it.

I’ve never heard of this either. I’m very much a dog person but I love animals in general, cats included. I’d never own a cat simply because I’d never stop worrying about it when it was out and about!

I'm a 'dog person' but I like cats, too. They're very independent but they're not as loyal to their owners as dogs and I hate the fact that they kill birds and other wildlife just for fun, as others have mentioned.

If asked or in conversation I'll describe myself as a dog person, because I prefer dogs to cats, I don't hate cats, I grew up with them and had 2 cats as an adult.
I don't hate them and would never intentionally hurt one, I thought I may have clipped one in the car a few nights ago and spent an hour looking and knocked on the house who's garden it ran out of, scoured Facebook for posts and cried when I got home.
I also wouldn't say I'll never have another, can't at the moment because I have a dog who chases (or tries to) cats, but I'd rather have a dog if I have a choice.

My cats are like dogs. And they certainly don't just care about themselves. One of them when i went through a miscarriage was literally joined to the hip wouldn't leave me alone. Was so sweet.
