to ask for your symptoms if you've had sepsis?

Hello,

I went to the GP this morning and was diagnosed with a chest infection. Have been given antibiotics.

I am just worried as I feel so unwell and this has been ongoing for over 10 days at the same level.

  • I cannot get warm no matter what I do. I am currently covered in goosebumps and my skin on my arms has a purple tinge to it. I'm thinking this could just be because I'm so cold though?
  • I feel so tired and weak, my muscles are just aching.

The other symptoms are usual of a chest infection, my chest is hurting and i'm coughing a lot, don't currently have a temp (36.1) atm.

I'm just curious on what your sepsis symptoms were? I don't normally get ill like this and it's just freaked me out.

If you've been sick for 10 days and have not been hospitalised, I doubt you have sepsis.

If you think you do, get yourself to a & e ASAP because you need medication or the consequences could be very serious.

cherryscola · 27/11/2023 17:49

Thank you, it's just the uncontrollable shivering and it's the coldest i think i have ever felt. Coupled with just feeling so ill, i haven't been like this probably since i was a child.

I will give the antibiotics a bit of time to kick in and see how it goes

When I had sepsis I had a high temperature, felt light headed, had no appetite for a few days. Tbh it didn't feel much different to having a bad case of the flu but then I passed out in the kitchen and came round to find paramedics kneeling next to me. They took me to hospital who diagnosed sepsis.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 27/11/2023 17:52

When dp had sepsis it came on really quickly and she wouldn't have made any sense typing on here.

Coulddowithanap · 27/11/2023 17:52

I'm sure confusion is a thing with sepsis, and high temperature but shivering.

Doseofreality · 27/11/2023 17:54

Very sad down pnset of what seemed like the worst case of flu ever, felt cold but people commented they could feel the heat coming off me, lost control of both bowel and bladder, then collapsed and lost consciousness.

HollaHolla · 27/11/2023 17:54

Yep. When I had sepsis, I was shivering, but lashing with sweat. I also became utterly incomprehensible. If it wasn't for my partner, I'd have died.
If you feel you might be suffering from sepsis, I would suggest you go straight to A&E. It needs to be dealt with quickly.

Insheerpanic · 27/11/2023 17:55

My daughter went the other way and her temperature was too low.. 35.. she was still drinking but was just gazing into space and just didn't seem right. Hope you're ok

Oh yeah. Apparently I had virulent diarrhea too. No memory.

Hobbesmanc · 27/11/2023 17:55

I started with a chest infection. That developed into double pneumonia and sepsis. I was taken straight to ICU by ambulance and was in hospital for two weeks. I'd not really heard of sepsis.

As well as the respiratory symptoms I was in real pain. Coughing or moving was agony. In fact at first they gave me an ecg as they thought it was cardiac failure as the pain in my chest was acute.

It progressed really rapidly too. So don't leave it too long if you start to feel disoriented and very sleepy. I also was really nauseous and I struggled to wee.

Gnomegnomegnome · 27/11/2023 17:56

@cherryscola if you are worried that you may have sepsis you need to be seen.

cherryscola · 27/11/2023 17:57

it's just so so cold, i think i'm going to go when DH back

The only thing that sounds a bit concerning is the purple colour skin. When my husband had suspected sepsis, this is something they said you would have but without a fever or other symptoms it doesn’t sound likely.

sorry you’re going through this OP. Why not call 111, tell them your symptoms and let them give you advice, this isn’t your burden to be working out symptoms and what they mean

Ringsender2 · 27/11/2023 18:00

Echoing those who say thar if you are concerned, seek immediate medical help.

This page is good, as it has symptoms of sepsis in adults (as well as kids), but also the early onset symptoms in adults (scroll down the page a bit).

Good luck OP. At least call 111, but in your position I would be considering A and E

Symptoms

Sepsis is a serious complication of an infection. If you or your child has any of the symptoms, seek urgent medical advice.

I've not had sepsis but I know when I had a chest infection a couple of years ago, I felt so ill. I don't know how I made it to the doctors and when I did I just cried. I was relieved when she diagnosed a chest infection and within a couple of days of taking antibiotics I started feeling better. Hopefully will be the same for you. Flowers

glassyhag · 27/11/2023 18:01

I had a septic hip joint earlier this year. Started with a raging temp of 39.7 c but would then plummet so I was freezing cold. Within 16 hours of it starting I was borderline delirious and I had these startling moments of clarity where I was 100% sure I was going to die. I originally thought I had bursitis but thank god my Gp knew better and sent me to the hospital. After a 14 hour wait in reception on Iv antibiotics they found me a bed and then the infection started getting really bad. I was rushed to surgery and despite feeling a bit better when I woke up and they had flushed the joint etc, the infection was tracking all down my leg and at one point I was nil by mouth and jokingly asked whether I wanted to keep the leg or just take it off ( I'm immuno compromised). I only found out a few days later that they weren't joking. Thank God they managed to fix it. I think I was in hospital for 9 days and on medication for lots of medication for 8 weeks after

Ringsender2 · 27/11/2023 18:01

PS, low temperature as well as a fever, can be a symptom. At 36.1, you are v close to that lower temperature boundary

Insheerpanic · 27/11/2023 18:05

Oh yes and she had badly mottled skin!!

cherryscola · 27/11/2023 18:05

Thanks for responses, i have an unsympathetic DH. He laughed on the phone and said don't be so stupid so it's helpful even just talking to others on here to try and calm down

SillyBub · 27/11/2023 18:07

To echo a PP, a low temperature is a classic symptom of sepsis. I'd call or get someone else to call 111 as you seem fairly lucid right now so perhaps not an immediate emergency but if you do stay home, make sure someone's watching over you and if your symptoms worsen (will probably happen quite quickly), call 999.

coffeetofunction · 27/11/2023 18:07

Please please please at the least call 111, I lost my DM to sepsis and I have absolutely no doubt that had it been picked up sooner she would not have lost her life to it

828Pax · 27/11/2023 18:09

My daughter started with a chest infection and then rapidly went downhill, with a high temp, confusion, staring into space and a seizure.

Wishthiswasntmypost · 27/11/2023 18:09

Vomiting, not urinating for 24 hrs, raised temp, drowsy and HR 160. The HR seemed to trigger instant action in ED

PostItInABook · 27/11/2023 18:11

Mottled skin and reduced temperature are signs of cold sepsis.
Can you count your heart rate over a minute whilst sitting down at rest OP?

Returnsreturnsandmorereturns · 27/11/2023 18:13

What’s your normal temp? 36.1 is low but would have been normal for my Mum.

My symptoms

  • exhaustion but I also had a new born so hadn’t had much sleep
  • high temp
  • dizziness
  • not weeing for 12 hours
  • feeling achey
